Robert Farquhar - 1863-1945 - Texas

I have been researching the Farquhar name as one of my ancestors married into this family. Courtney Alexander Van Tuyl (born July 14, 1889 in Cook County, IL) married Roberta Farquhar (born February 23, 1888 in Texas) some time between 1920 and 1923. Roberta Farquhar was the daughter of Robert Farquhar and Tennie Payne. I have the death records for both Courtney Alexander Van Tuyl and his wife, Roberta Farquhar Van Tuyl. If you have any additional info or questions, please respond to this message or email me directly at trunewf@ameritech.net Thank you!

Hello Michael:
Nice to hear from you. Your Alex and James are the brothers of Samuel. I have previously been contacted a couple of years ago by a cousin of yours from James's line. But unfortunately I had a small stroke and did not get back to him. It took me a short time to get back in the groove but I never did not get back to my Houston contacts. I do have a lot of names and dates for the Houstons to share with you. If you are in touch with the above cousin he may still have my email. It has not changed. I will be able to then send you what I have on your family.

Mike

hello mike
I do quite a bit of family research for lots of the Glenwherry families- we're all interlinked!!
Elizabeth Orrs husband was Alexander Houston, and they had a son Samuel. Their son Samuels DOB in the baptismal register is 1st January 1881. If this is the same man he was a saddler in Ballyclare. The Alex and James Houstons mentioned in earlier posts were brothers of Samuel(and Great Great uncles of mine by marriage!).
Get in touch with me if you like and I'll try and give you any more information I can.
Regards
Michael.

John Farquhar - born 1749 (not 1745)

I'm getting very confused. I've seen that a lot of people appear to be related to John Farquhar born in 1745 in Rathven, Banffshire, Scotland who married a Janet (or Jannet) Coul (or Coull) in 1794 and had at least three children, possibly four.

I cannot find a John Farquhar born in Rathven in 1745. I do have a John Farquhar who was born in Rathven on or around 8 September 1749 to William Farquhar and Elspet Geddes.

It's my belief that John was married twice. First to Mary Jappy (or Jappie) in 1772 and then to Janet in 1794.

Does this theory ring any bells with anyone?

If my theory is right then this information must be correct:

William Farquhar (John's father) born about 1725
Elspet Geddes (John's mother) born between 1722 and 1731
Married on 15 June 1736

William's parents:
John Farquhar born between 1692 and 1701, died 1741
Jean Matheson born 1699
Married 10 Jan 1724

William's siblings:
Charles born 1727
Alexander born 1727
John born 1729

Going back to John, I have the following children from marriage to Mary Jappy:

William born 1773
John born 1776
Ann born 1778
James born 1780
Margaret born 1782
Jean born 1785
Helen born 1787
George born 1789

My ggfather Thomas Farquhar was born in Ireland around 1843. His parents were William and Mary. His mother was born around 1803. They both immigrated to America (New York); he in 1870, she in 1875. I see by your postings you have extensive records of Farquhars. Do these fit in anywhere? Also, we have conflicting information that he was from Aberdeen, Scotland. Thanks much.

Hi
Yes it would appear we have William and Jannet as common ancestors! I have Euphemia with the exactly the same birthdate. I have two more children after Euphemia, my g.g Robert 1801 and Alexander born 1805. I have Jannet's birthdate as 1758 which would make her 47 when Alexander was born. She had at least 9 children . It was not uncommon for women to be having children in those days until they were into their early fifties and nature stepped in! I have been unable to find much more about either Jannet or William as yet so I'd be very grateful for any info anyone has.
I am very interested to find why Robert took his family down to Glasgow sometime between 1845 and 1847. Were agricultural 'advances' a reason? Was he lured by promise of work in Glasgow. What ever it was didn't last long as he moved on again after 1847 (My g gma was born in 1847 in Port Glasgow) the family appears on the 1851 census for Liverpool. Any Farquhars in Liverpool have any info?
I found your post from 2 years ago with a Google search cos I was trying to find out about Euphemia Farquhar who it appears is my great great great grandmother.

From the searches I've made, it seems William Farquhar and Jannet Smith from Aboyne were her parents although I wonder whether the dates I have are correct as Euphemia was born 31/05/1801. 50 seems old to be having children in the 18th century but your birth date for Robert seems to back this up. Euphemia married a Peter Boyd at St Cuthberts Edinburgh on 05/05/1830 and they had a daughter Margaret, who in turn married a George Gardner in Shotts in 1862

Assuming this is the same William Farquhar and Jannet Smith, your post has helped with dates as I hadn't been able to trace anything on them.

Hi, Jill,

No match. My John Farquhar's parents were Joseph and Sarah. However, I think I have some info for you. When your Thomas John died, he left Mary some land in Jersey City, NJ, I believe.

You should or have someone check the Hudson County Courthouse Register of Deeds; Index to Deeds Grantee Series 1, Vol E-F, Years 1805-1885. There is where someone found for me a few things, but what was also copied was this entry:
Mary A., Thomas J. Farquhar (Grantee) and Thomas Kyle (Grantor and, I believe executor). You would need to see Book/Liber 394 and page 602.

Also, check Index to Deeds, Grantee Series 2, Vol E-F, Years 1885-1896. In 1888, they show Mary H (or A) and Thomas J. Farquhar as Grantees and Joseph Montgomery (??) in Book/Liber463 (or 465---hard to make out). Also in 1888, they appear again on July 7 as Grantors (Book 462, Page 248) and the Grantee is Geroge FA Gerbold and wife.

There is also an estate file in the Hudson County Surrogate's Court for Mary A. Farquhar filed in 1909. You may want to have a look at that, as well.

Hope some of this is useful to you. I always wondered who was lucky enough to have Mary and Thomas J. as ancestors---they seem to have left you a good paper trail!

Good luck
Amy

My great grandfather's name was Thomas John Farquhar. I have not been able to find where he was born. He immigrated to New York in 1870. He lists his age as 26. His mother Mary immigrated in 1873 from Ireland with a younger Mary. He married Mary Vance in 1880 and had four children: Sarah, Mary, Jane and William. His death certificate from 1890 in New Jersey says he was born in Ireland and his father's name was William. His occupations were alternately listed as porter, coachman and warehouseman.

Hi,

I've been following the trail of one John T. Farquhar/Farquher (or John F. Farquhar/Farquher) who was born in Ireland circa 1852, came to the USA circa 1880, and as of 1882 was married and living in Hartford, CT. While there, he and his wife had two children and he is listed as a proprietor of the great Charter Oak City Shirt Company. By 1885 he is a widower and by 1895, he seems to have sold off his property in Hartford and disappears.

He had the following siblings:
Charlotte Farquhar (m. John McKinney)
Jane Farquhar (m. Samuel Teas)
Samuel Farquhar
Charles Farquhar

Mother was Sarah Ann (Bethel) Farquhar and father was Joseph.

Hi there my name is scott farquhar from Aberdeen and i have been looking up all about my family history, if you can give me any information regarding the history of our very cool surname with regards to our American history it would be very much apreciated. I think that from what i can gather the origin of Farquhar is from the scottish/engilsh border in the Sterling area where one of our distant relatives married and changed the name to Farquharson from what i have managed to gather i'am guessing that at some time the majority of Farquhar's descided to move to America, From what i have found there are only a handful of people with the the same name still living in Aberdeen (uk) so like i said if you can give me any information regarding this matter it would be most apreciated.

Thanks Aileen
This info helps a lot to fill in a few gaps. Have you (or anyone reading the posts) any info on William and Jannet and beyond?I have been unable to find anything out from the internet a trip up to Aberdeen might help! Also has anyone with links to William and Jannet found any connection to Arthur Farquhar who served on one of Nelson's ships at Trafalgar (as a Captain I understand) he was later an Admiral. Arthur lived in Aboyne so I wondered if there was a link.
Anyway Thanks again Aileen,
I am really stuck on this one so ANY info anyone has would be great!
Faith
