Hello,

I wondered whether you were still looking for William Farrant. The London records on this website are rather better now than when you originally posted, and it seems likely that William belongs to my family.
Re: Farrant, of Shute

Hello Jim,

Thanks for the reply.

I have found a tree on Ancestry which has death certificate information for Samuel Farrant in 1848, and identifies an Ann who died in 1872 as being his widow. There is also a marriage certificate for George which confirms him as being a son of Samuel and Ann.

The death certificate for Ann allows me to identify her in the censii after she was widowed and in two of these she is living with a shoemaker named John Farrant who was born in Shute around 1813, and his wife Mary who was born c.1813 in Cotleigh.

The tree that I found identifies John as being the son of Ann Casewell, but I have concluded that it is actually Mary his wife who was the daughter of Samuel and Ann. To make this work Mary's maiden name would have had to have been the same as her married name, but there is a marriage of a John Farrant to a Mary Farrant at Shute on 24th July 1834 which fits this couple and their children perfectly. I therefore conclude that Mary was the Mary christened at Cotleigh on 25th October 1812 to Samuel and Ann, and that her husband was the son of Thomas Farrant and Hannah Harner (married Shute 1810). The 1841 census has John and Mary living with a Hannah age 65 and a Robert age 20 who I take to be Hannah Harner as was and her son Robert chr 1821.

I think the above connects the Cotleigh baptisms that I referred to before into your family. The Hawkchurch ones remain speculatative but I have added them into the data below so that you have all the information:

1. Samuel FARRANT was born in 1778 (approx.) in Devon. He was a Carpenter. He married Ann CASEWILL on 17 June 1800 in Shute, Devon. BOTP, by banns, witnesses William FRY, Winniford FRY. Samuel and Ann CASEWILL appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Shute, Devon. He died on 25 January 1848 in Shute, Devon.

Ann CASEWILL was born in 1777 (approx.) in Devon. She died on 8 May 1872 in Shute, Devon. She and Samuel FARRANT had the following children:

2 Ann FARRANT (1805?- ). Ann was born in 1805 (approx.). She was christened on 18 August 1805 in Hawkchurch, Dorset.(*1)
3 George FARRANT (1806?-aft1881). George was born in 1806 (approx.) in Shute, Devon. He was a Labourer.(*2) He married Joanna BEERE on 11 September 1834 in Axmouth, Devon.(*3) On 30 November 1834 he was a Carpenter. He married Ann PERRY on 10 March 1846 in Seaton and Beer, Devon. He died after 3 April 1881.
4 John FARRANT (1808?- ). John was born in 1808 (approx.). He was christened on 23 April 1808 in Hawkchurch, Dorset.
5 Thomas FARRANT (1809?- ). Thomas was born in 1809 (approx.). He was christened on 20 July 1809 in Hawkchurch, Dorset.(*1)
6 Anna FARRANT (1811?- ). Anna was born in 1811 (approx.). She was christened on 18 August 1811 in Cotleigh, Devon.(*4)
7 Mary FARRANT (1812?-aft1851). Mary was born in 1812 (approx.) in Cotleigh, Devon. She was christened on 25 October 1812 in Cotleigh, Devon.(*4) She married John FARRANT on 24 July 1834 in Shute, Devon.(*5) She died after 30 March 1851.
8 Elizabeth FARRANT (1815?-aft1841). Elizabeth was born in 1815 (approx.) in Devon. She was christened on 14 May 1815 in Cotleigh, Devon.(*2) She died after 5 June 1841. She appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Shute, Devon.
9 Sarah FARRANT (1818?- ). Sarah was born in 1818 (approx.). She was christened on 28 January 1818 in Shute, Devon.(*2) of Shute.
10 Jane FARRANT (1820?-aft1841). Jane was born in 1820 (approx.) in Devon. She was christened on 10 December 1820 in Shute, Devon.(*2) She died after 5 June 1841. She appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Shute, Devon.
11 Patience FARRANT (1822?- ).
Dear Peter,

I much-appreciate your prompt and helpful response to my query.

No, sorry I haven't a baptism for George either.

I assume you have access to my public 'Farrant et al. (Devon,Somerset,London)' family tree on Ancestry, so I won't detail the info. I have regarding Ann and Samuel FARRANT's six (?) children here - but re: baptisms, I've only those for Elizabeth: 14th May 1915 in Cotleigh and Jane: 10th December 1820 (no location). Please would you let me have any further details you may have regarding the children.

I'm hoping that the location of these baptisms may also provide a lead to the elusive Ann's background - for instance, your mention of Hawkchurch, of which I was unaware.

Also, I appreciate your mention of Samuel and Ann's marriage witnesses - the FRYs.

If you'd like to see more of my family tree on Ancestry, I would be happy to invite you as a Guest. I understand that that would provide you with more info. than the Public access I mentioned earlier.

By the Farrant/Axminster connection I feel sure that we must be related - but wouldn't it be good to know how ! With my best wishes, Jim

Hello Jim

I have various pieces of disjointed information including baptisms of children of "Samuel and Ann" at Cotleigh and Hawkchurch in addition to Shute (though I have not found a baptism for George - have you?).

I also have noted the marriage of Samuel Farrant and Ann Casewill which took place at Shute on 17th June 1800 (BOTP, by banns, witnesses William FRY, Winniford FRY).

At the moment I have theories but am lacking on solid leads. This family is on my list of families to research as I think they may be connected to my Farrants in Axminster but I do not live close to Devon so my trips to do research are infrequent.

Regards
Peter

Please, does anyone have any information regarding SAMUEL FARRANT b:c.1780 in Shute, Devon or ANN CASEWILL whom he married in 1800 in Shute.

Hello Bob,

I have found out a little more about this branch of the family since the earlier postings in this thread.

William Farrant and Hannah Marks were married at Otterford in 1832, and in the early years of their marriage lived at Bishopswood, then Churchstantion, then Coombe St Nicholas and finally Chardstock. I believe Susan to have been born in 1849 rather than 1850 (GRO 1849Q4 Axminster 10/6) though I have not found a baptism for her. Susan's parents were both buried at Chardstock, William in 1875 and Hannah in 1888 (though Hannah probably died in Martock - GRO 1888Q4 Yeovil 5c/258). The Chardstock records including both burials and Susan Farrant's marriage to James Shiner are on line at the "Chardstock Web Museum" website. Following the death of James Shiner I think Susan took up with an Albert Cornelius though I have not found a marriage for them as yet.

I will drop you a line at the e-mail address that you have posted so that you can write to me that way if you prefer.

Regards
Peter

Yes, on the 1861 Census, Robert FARRANT does state that he was born in Clayhidon, Devon (RG9/4359 folio 79a). He was a Attorney & Solicitor in Llandudno and died there in 1867.

My primary interest lies in his son, Francis Westall FARRANT and, in particular, where he may be buried and any descendants of his only daughter.

Best wishes,

Marion Woolgar

I think that your Robert Farrant was probably born around 1832 in Clayhidon, Devon and christened 17th August 1835, son of Robert b.c.1781 Devon (occupation gentleman) and Anne b.c.1793 West Quantoxhead, Somerset.

It seems likely that his wife was Mariana Reece and they married in Kings Norton Registration District in the 4th quarter of 1859. Probably GRO ref 6c/171 though FreeBMD have Mariana at 6c/761.

I have not managed to put together yet whether the Clayhidon Farrants connect with my Axminster Farrants.

Regards
Peter

Norman was my grandfather. He married 'Laura Lilian Cook' in Leicester in 1939 and they went on to have 2 sons. Laura's father is noted as 'Montague, hotel porter' on their marriage certificate. My problem is the Cook side of the family - I can find nothing, anywhere, about either Montague or Laura. Although my g/parents married and lived in Leicestershire, I seem to recall that Laura was a Londoner. According to the marr.cert, she was born around 1915 but I have no idea where. This branch of my family tree doesn't even have a little shoot so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Wendy

I am looking for descendents of Isaac Farrant (son of George Amos Farrant & Caroline Richardson) and Mary Ann Butler or Mary Ann Neal. Both Isaac and Mary were born in England, but they immigrated to Australia in the early 1900s. I do know that they had children - George, Caroline, Nancy, and Olive. I would like to hear from anyone descended from this line of Farrant.

They do not seem to have had any children.

I am keen to trace any of Williams siblings descendants. They were Samuel, Archibald, Amy and twins Ernest and Albert.

Thank you

There is a William Farrant born in Pancras registration district in 1882, and a William Frank Farrant born in Marylebone district in 1871. You may need to find more clues - do you know who he married and when?

Regards
peter

Hi, my great grandmother was Jane Oakley, she brought up my

father and two of my uncles, the other boy was brought up
by my maternal grandmothers family.Jane Oakley came from
Suffolk, she was born there,i had no idea that my great grandfather had left her to go to the U.S.A, her sons ,Uncle Dan,& Uncle Percy & i think their sister Esther
all went (unsure about the Eshter connection)but i can tell you that we are from France and came over in i think 1775.
Not sure how much of this is any help , i only know that there is a lot of family history about all of this , told to me by Percey & Dan when they came over in the early 50's. Woe is the tale,
There is a discrepency as to the names, as it seems they were all known by a different christian name , other than the one they were christened with,eg Dan may have been Dennis? They were all very big men, with a wicked sense of
humour, which did get them into trouble, hence why Dan lost his finger. Trouble, was the reason that escape to far off shores was opted for, but now i guess it was my great grandad that was in trouble, i thought it was Dan.Remember
now that Fred came over & had the most beautiful wavey hair.
Hope this helps .

.

I am researching a branch of the Farrance family for living relatives in Ohio USA. William David Farrance (born Essex 1856) married Jane Oakley (born 1864) & they raised several children born between 1888 and 1904, including Frederick Farrance. Curiously, William David emigrated to Ohio before WWI and took the name of William Moore. He died in Cleveland in 1949. Where I particularly need help is in identifying his parents. My informant believes that William David Farrance's father was David, the mother possibly Sarah. I cannot find any record prior to the 1891 census. Anyone willing to share leads?

Re:Farrants Stoke by Clare, Risbridge, Suffolk.

Hi
I have got my line back to George Farrance married to Elizabeth Ridgwell, but have not got any dates. I have George as a possible 1786-1854 and Elizabeth as 1806 -1856, but she appears to young to have given birth to the children!

Can anyone supply these and perhaps go back further.

George and Elizabeth had a son Thomas born 1820 married to Phoebe Clark, she died 1858 and he re-married.

I believe that Thomas may have had 2 brothers, Charles b 1816, James b1823 and 2 sisters Ann b 1818 and Charlotte b 1813.

Any info would be appreciated.

thanks
Steve

Woodcock,WeiseHi Lauren Tried to contact you at you other email address but it bounced. We exchanged farrant details some years ago and I am now further down the track:
Hi Larraine, long time no speak I have moved to Sunny Queensland; my wife's home town (us men do funny things for the ladies in our life).
Can you help me with Mabel Clementine Farrant born Haverhill parents listed as James Farrant 7 Eliza Cracknell but them would have been too old, probably a child of one of their sons or daughters. Mabel moved to the Usa after 1900 and finally resided in Baltimore Usa and became a Usa citizen; and came home to Bournemouth (think) to die in the 1980's. He uncle Ernest Woodcock Born 19 Sept 1907 Hammersmith London Died 27 Apr 1990 (San Diego California) also went to the Usa ;changed his name to Farrant (after his mother Betsey Farrant the sister or cousin of Mabel) but Ernest married Jean Laura Weise (whom he met in Iowa)and resided at Oceanside San Diego California and there has never been any mention of him knowing or meeting Mabel.
