I have several pictures of Georgette Farrin. The grandchildren that are with her are William Earl, Ivil, or Melvin Wylie. Georgette also had a daughter Grace, the mother of the grandchildren with Georgette. She married my Great Grandfather Robert Wylie. Grace either died giving birth to Melvin or shortly after he was born. I haven't been able to find out where they were living when she died. It was either SW Nebraska or Missouri.

Hi Patricia,

The William Farrin you're referring to was also named William Rudolph. His place of birth was mis-listed on the 1880 census as Indiana. (Only his oldest son listed him correctly.) He was actually born around 1831 in England. He served on the Union side during the Civil War in Indiana's 60th Infantry. He married Georgetta Walker Maxey in 1862. This is the same man listed in the first posting on this forum. We're still trying to figure out who his parents were!

Hope this helps!

Rebecca Farrin

Hello Cousin,
My great grandfather was a brother to Charles Albert Farrin. His name was Frank. There was also a sister named Mary Victoria who moved west to Oregon and then California. Their father, Charles D. Farrin (who married Mary Walker of New Portland, Maine) was born about 1813 and died in 1857. He was a mariner and died on ship of what they called "local fever." He was buried at sea near Panama. Mary Walker (his wife) died young in the fall of 1848 of tuberculosis. She is buried at the old Walker cemetery in New Portland, Maine. Charles and his mother and brother in-law moved to Pemaquid around 1850 which is the area in which much of the family has remained.

Charles D Farrin's father was Thomas Farrin. He married Lucy Snowman of Georgetown in 1812. Charles D had a sister named Nancy B who died around the time that Mary Walker died. Thomas was a sea captain and married a woman in Baltimore named Eliza (Rabourg)McLellan while still married to Lucy. Lucy divorced him in 1821 and remarried to John MacMahan of Georgetown. Lucy and John had 4 children together. Thomas died young in 1827. I have not been able to find out how he died. He was in Peru where there was fighting and sold a ship there to the government to be used as a warship. There is not mention of him after that, at least that I can find. Eliza died in the late 1840s. Thomas and Eliza had at least 1 child. His name was Thomas W. Farrin who went to the Cincinnati area and was successful with a lumber company. I'm sure there are cousins out there that are of that line.

Thomas was the son of David Farrin of Brunswick. David married Nancy Bowker. They had many children. Thomas was the oldest.

David was the youngest son of John Farrin who moved to Brunswick around 1750 and was a school teacher. John had many children also. John married Hannah Newman of Lynn, Mass.

John was the son of Patrick Farrin who is said to be from Dublin, Ireland. Patrick was a peri-wig maker and barber in Ipswich, MA. He probably came to this country as an apprentice. There were several ships carrying Irish (especially Scotch-Irish) around the time that Patrick's name appears (around 1720).

I have more details if you wish.
Joyce (Farrin) Lucas

James Ettridge is my 3xgreat grandfather, and is as far back as I can get on this side of the family. James married Jane Elizabeth Farrin 11 May 1823 at St. Leonards, Shoreditch. I only have approx. birth dates on both James and Elizabeth. IGIbatches show a Charles Farrin of Shoreditch marrying a Mary Susan Mendham 14 Dec 1802. I have also found a death date on a Charles Farrin 1839 @ Greenwich. As you have stated, I have found no record of any naval service for him, and doubt that an Admiral's daughter would marry so far beneath her station, as James was a humble gardener. (It is possible, but unlikely). I have located further children born to Charles. Charles Farrin b. 14 Dec 1798 at Shoreditch. Note: this is before their marriage date. Mary Susannah b. 26 Jan 1807 in Greenwich, George Edward b. 11 Feb 1810, Greenwich, Edward James b.? C. 8 Jan 1812 Greenwich. George served as a Warrant Officer in the Navy, retiring in 1871. His sons also served in the navy. I found a record for a Rear Admiral James M. Farrin, retiring 28 Jun 1963. I found no birth record of Jane Elizabeth.
The mystery deepens. Either our family records are in error, or there is a lovely story here. My great, great grandmother, was Sarah Ettridge who married David Venables. They resided at Goff's Oak, Cheshunt, as did my great grandmother, Francis Emily who married William Adams. My grandparents often talked of Goff's Oak, and their life before they emigrated to Canada.
If any of this info is useful to you, please don't hesitate to contact me. It sounds as if your daughter in law may be a distant cousin.

I too am researching Sir Charles Farrin. I have family only information that he was born about 1775. I have also checked the full Royal Navy lists for the period covering all ranks from Admiral to Lieutenant. There is no record of any person called Farrin under any rank in the Royal Navy from 1800 to 1845. My daughter in law is linked to the Ettridge family through her maternal line. One of her very elderly aunts, Grace Ettridge has found out that the Country Estate of a Sir Charles Farrin, thought to be the one we are interested in, was Sparrow Hall, Halstead Hill, Goffs Oak, Hertfordshire. It is now known as Halstead House. Regarding the Venables family, the internet suggests that a George Venables was born in Goffs Oak in 1791. His son David (1828-1903) married Sarah Ettridge (1829-1903) who was the grand-daughter of Sir Charles Farrin. If you find this information of any interest, I have a family tree of the Ettridge family from James to date, please contact me and I will email as much information that I have.
My grandfather was Afton Farrin, Sr. of South Bristol, Maine. My father is Afton Farrin, Jr. I have just begun looking into the family history to try and follow it back through Charles David. Charles David Farrin was married in or near Norridgewock, Maine in 1841, but I have been unable to find his date of birth or death. I am volunteering at the Norridgewock Historical Society and hope to come across some information as I catalog their archives. I will gladly send you anything I find.
