Lorne and Beatrice Farrish

Hi, my name is Amanda Farrish, I don,t know very much about my Farrish ancestry because I'm only 12 years old I found this website by loking up my mon's name, Betty Farrish, but her maiden name is Knoop (Dutch) and my dad, Dale Farrish, is the real Farrish. Well a few years ago my grandpa Donald Farrish mentioned that his family originated from Scotland but I don't know witch part of Scotland. But my grandpa's father and mother's names were Lorne and Beatrice (don't know if spelt right) Farrish.I forgot to metion I have 2 older brothers named Corey and Travis and I AM CANADIAN and I live in Ontario by Godrich near Lucknow.I have 3 uncles,David,Doug and Donnie Rae (Donald Junior Rae Farrish) and 2 aunts Diane and Darlene (notice all names start with a "D" because parents names are Donald and Dorothy Farrish) There is also lots of other Farrish's in this area and we also have a Farrish Picnic every year in the first week of August. So there is lots of Farrishs in Canada and that is as much of what I know about my heritage,so I'll get my dad to write more, but he is in Florida right now, so I say Good Bye.

Sincerely, hopfully a long lost cousin
Amanda Farrish

I see no connection that I can verify, but there is a possibility. One of my ancestors, Robert Farrish had children born in the same time frame: William, Robert, Helen, and Mary. Robert Senior, had a sibiling whom I have no information for. It is possible that George could have been his sibling. Jenette would have been of the same generation as Robert junior.

Bearing in mind that Ecclefechan is such a tiny town I thought it interesting that I have a Jenette FARRIES, (daughter of George and Lucy Farries) born 10 March 1799, who emigrated to Canada with her husband James Brand in 1828. The names are so similar I wondered if they had the same derivation. Any connection?

Hello rainy-nv
Sorry for this old thread but if you are still around we must be related to you. My name is Dale Farrish. My grandfather was Lorne Farrish, my father is Donald Farrish. We live in Ashfield Township in Huron County, Lucknow Ontario, Canada. I would think that John would be my grandfather's brother or a cousin at least. I do know we had a "Uncle" Bud (John) Farrish who died years ago but his sons still live here. This John and Margret( McKay would likely be his parents. I could find out more, please email me back.

Lisa,

Is your last name spelled Farrish? I know my family came to the US in 1855 with Salvadore Farach. He and his relatives had a photography store in Brooklyn. My grandfather John Farash lived in New Jersey, then in Flushing. My father was Thomas Ducey Farrish and we lived in Hempstead until 1956. I have a lot of relatives still on Long Island; also in New York City. Our name has changed several times over the generations. Has yours?
Lisa,

My grandfather's name was John Farash. He was married (or maybe not) to Katherine (Kitty) Miller. She was an actress and came from Rhode Island. We believe she had a child previous to living with my grandfather in Flushing, L.I., New York. His name was Arthur and he took the last name of Farash. My father acuired the name of Farrish from his uncle. There were three brothers, Thomas Farrish, John Farash, and Sylvester Farish. Each spelled their last name differently. In my research, I never found a wife named Velma. My grandmother, John's first wife before Kitty, was Gertrude Lyons. They lived in Delawanna, New Jersey.

Dean

David,

I have completed tracing my ancestry and find we go back to a Salvadore Farach who came from Italy in 1855 to Brooklyn, NY. So the name changed from present day Farrish. My grandfather was John Farash. His father was Salvadore Farach and came to the US in 1855. So we are not related. But, I have spent years tracing the Farrish lineage and maybe can help you or others who came from Scotland. Also, did you know there are many Farrish's in the oil business. A William Farrish was co-founder of Humble Oil and William Stamps Farrish was the chairman of Standard Oil of New Jersey. E-mail me at dpraetz@hotmail.com if I can help.

Re: Farrish Family in Canada

To Donna Farrish:
We are the Canadian Farrish's who mostly reside in the province of Ontario, just across the lake from OHIO and New York state. Our family came from Scotland in the Dumphries area and emigrated to New York in 1851 on the ship Shannon, which sailed out of Liverpool England.
Some of our family is in Michigan and one or two relatives in Ohio. In fact I am going to a reunion to-morrow and some from Ohio will be there. Here is a note sent to me by Dean Thomas Farrish of the USA and his research is the same as ours so we do believe we are related. Here's his note.
Dear David,

I have been tracing the Farrish name for several years and just ran across your website. I traced Farrish back to a David Farrish in Scotland. The oldest records I could find were from baptism records of a church called Kirkmichael outside of Dumphries. It was dated 1720 and he signed as a witness to the baptism. Hope this helps. Contact me if you have any information of Farrish's that lived in Brooklyn, New York. It seems my ancestors lived there for many years, I don't know of any relatives in Canada.

Sincerely,

Dean Thomas Farrish

Here is his e mail address.
Evangeline Sullivan [esullivstgeorger@yahoo.com]
Hope this helps, I the whole family on Family Tree Maker since about 1720 for the ones that came to Canada through New York. There are also a number of Farrish's in the Huston area. In fact the university at Huston has a Farrish hall as they were a very prominate family.
If you have any questions let me know.
Dave Farrish

I wrote you an extensive response then my PC packed up. I'll get back to you soon but basically I do not know John Farrish's parents. The Farrishes must have moved to Oakwoodhill in 1831/32 and decided to emigrate at the end of their 21 year farm business tenancy. All bar the last child is baptised in Graitney ( Gretna). MY jane is married from half morton but late states she was born in Gretna.

Anne Ward alsmost certainly dau of David Ward and Elizabeth Irvine.

The children left behind are worth studying.
Hello Iain
I found your message very interesting. I have Janet born in 1811 in Dumfriesshire, but I did not know she was born in Gretna. My records indicate that the next younger child, Barbara, was born in 1813 in Half Morton Dumfriesshire. The family were tenant farmers on the Oakwoodhill farm just north of Chapelknowe. So, based on your information, it appears that they moved to the Oakwoodhill farm from Gretna between 1811 and 1813. Most of the family (John, Ann and 8 of their 13 children) moved to Canada in 1851. Elizabeth (b. 1810), Janet, and Grace (b. 1821) did not travel with them, so I assumed they remained in Scotland. Unfortunately, I have no other information on the three women. Do you have any information on John Farrish's (b 1786) parents? That is my dead end!
Kenneth

I have some information taken from "A History of West Ashfield" 1996.

In 1851, John Farrishand his wife Annie Ward sailed from Liverpool England to New York on the ship, the Shannon, with 13 members of the Farrish family. This couple, native of Gretna Green Scotland were 67 yrs old.

In this group were 2 children, David and Margaret (Farrish) Scott. James either died before they left Scotland or shortly after at sea and his wife Barbara is buried in Montreal (acoording to a tombstone found at Gretna Green). With the parents gone, these children were given the Farrish name and raised by their grandparents John and Annie Farrish

The grandparents willed their farm in Ashfield township (Huron County Ontario) to David (1840-1911). His sister Margaret married John Jamieson and settled in Ashfield twsp.

Around 1870 David married Ann Dickson (1852-1937). They had 11 children!
1. Elizabeth (1871-1946)
2. Margaret J. (1872-1949)
3. John (1875-1952)
4. Thomas (1877-1882)
5. Barbara (1879-1950)
6. George (1882-1931)farmed in Sask also a car dealer
7. Robert (1882-?) farmed and an auctioneer in Alta
8. Thomas (1885-?) farmed in Sask
9. David "Jack" (1887-?) farmed in Ashfield and Sask
10 Minnie (1891-?)
11. Wilfred "Pete" (1894-1968)

My great grandfather was Wilfred (married Grace Johnston). They had 4 children, Alexander (Bud), Anna Mae (1918-2011), Grant (1925-2011), and Bob (1922-1993). My grandfather was Alexander (1920-1980).

Hope this helps fill in some blanks!

I'm truly amased to find there are other Farrish's out there. I was always told we were german and irish, my great-grandfather died at an young age and my grandfather did'nt speak of him at all. My father said he knew nothing about him. I would love to find out more but really don't know how to go about doing this without spending a small fortune.

About the John Farrish whose wife was Velma (Collins). I believe he was in the army during WWII, and in fact my family has a picture of him in uniform. He was of German/Itish/Italian descent, since his mother was of German descent; her maiden name was Ida Schwab. John's father was Thomas W. Farrish, Jr., who in turn descended from an Irish mother and a half Irish/half Italian father. So, insofar as ancestry is concerned, John's ancestors were four eights German, three eights Irish and one eight Italian. John was my cousin, and in fact was named after my father, John O. Farrish.

My grandfather was Thomas Wilman Farrish, born circa 1860s, married Anna Farrell circa 1880s, and had four children ... Rowena, Mary, Thomas W. Jr., and John O'Connor Farrish, in that order. Thomas Wilman Sr. lived all his life in the environs of New York City, and resided in Queens at the time of his death.

I am the son of John O,, so Thomas W. Jr. was my uncle. Uncle Junior, as we called him, had a son by his first wife, Ida, who he named John (he named the boy in honor of my father). I think Uncle Junior's son John may have been your grandfather.

I am searching for any information (ancestors or descendants) of William (Andrew?) Farrish and Catherine Smith. William was born in 1795 in Ecclefechan, Hoddam Parish, Dumbriesshire, Scotland. Catherine was born about 1805 in (possibly) Brampton, Cumbria, England. They were married July 10, 1835, in Richibucto, Kent, New Brunswick and died in Wood Co., Wisconsin. At least two of their children, William and Elizabeth, moved to Asotin Co., Washington. I am descended from Elizabeth, who married Charles Richards and would love to exchange information with any other Farrish descendants.

John Farrish or Farries

I am seeking information on the parents of John Farrish b.1786 of Oakwoodhill, Half Morton, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Surname may have been spelled Farries. John and family emigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1853.

I was just running around the internet and saw your comments with Debbie. I am from London Ontario and orginally from Goderich area. I am currently in Florida and will be heading back north next week. I do have Family Tree Maker with the family history back to the ship that came over if you are interested. I would also like to hear about your trip to Scotland as well.

Send me a note and I will get back to you.
Dave
