Janet -- The material I have on Capt. James is still a bit sketchy. The only war that he would have been involved in was the War of 1812. He was born Dec 1784 and died 1830. Although, at this point I think he may still be living as we cannot find his grave! Have you "The Farwell Family"? They list veterans from several wars -- my ancestor Abel served in the Revolution from Mass (p. 634) and my father is listed on p 646 as a WWI veteran -- Frank Tyler Farwell. I am unfamiliar with Carmi, IL, but will look on a map. If there is anything I can do to help facilitate your search let me know. I am a bit closer. My e-mail address is thygers@wi.net. We'll find these 2 elusive captains yet!
