Hello,

My great uncle, James Canning (originally Cannon, from the townland of Lear, Gortlettragh), lived at 4 Button St in New Haven. His sister Rose (who ended up marrying a Mulvey), gave that address when she came over in 1909.

Rose and her husband ended up living in Hell's Kitchen, and later, Inwood in northern Manhattan.

Hope this helps,
Jamie Canning

Re: Thomas Faughnan m. Mary McGovern Co Leitrim

Hello,

I realize this is an old post.
I see you have referenced Cattan so I am going through a lot of my findings and I am not really sure how this all fits together but....

Other records show a Thomas Faughnan was born Mar 02, 1865 to Michael Faughnan and Ellen McGarry, Rinn. There is some inconsistency with the dates below backed into from 1901 census. I realize this is not the Thomas you are referencing in the 1901 census from Annaduff but given the names of the niece and nephew (Heslin) living with this widower I thought it may be a consideration.

* Thomas Faughnan Listed on the 1901 as a 45 yr old farmer living in Cattan and as being married but does not mention his wife. That being so it backs into a date of birth of 1856. He is listed as living with his niece Ellen Heslin and nephew Michael Heslin In the 1911 census he is listed as as a widower living alone.

* Catherine Faughnan was married to John Heslin in Gortletteragh on Jan 01, 1887. John is further listed in the 1901 census as a 58 yr old widower living in Cattan which makes his year of birth 1845.

Their children were Ellen Heslin baptized Dec 12, 1877 and Michael Heslin baptized May 31, 1884
The Flax Growers list of 1796- Faughnan

The Flax Growers list of 1796 (Spinning Wheel Premium)

The Irish Linen Board published a list of nearly 60,000 individuals in 1796. Spinning wheels were awarded based on the number of acres planted. People who planted one acre were awarded 4 spinning wheels and those growing 5 acres were awarded a loom.

Making this list one of the earlier published listings in which to reference. Though there is not much more information on the individuals I was wondering how many Faughnan's may have tied any of these Faughnan's into ther family tree. Of particular interest to me was the listing's from Cloone, Leitrim. John & Thady. John seems to logically fit into my branch but I really havent seen teh name Thady Faughnan before.
I am wondering if anyone has any input on either.
Thanks,
Michael Faughnan

Faughan, Edward Mohill, Leitrim
Faughan, Hugh Mohill, Leitrim
Faughan, Thady Mohill, Leitrim
Faughnan, Andrew Annaduff, Leitrim
Faughnan, Charles Mohill, Leitrim
Faughnan, Daniel Mohill, Leitrim
Faughnan, Edward Annaduff, Leitrim
Faughnan, Edward Mohill, Leitrim
Faughnan, James Mohill, Leitrim
Faughnan, John Annaduff, Leitrim
Faughnan, John Cloone, Leitrim
Faughnan, Maud Mohill, Leitrim
Faughnan, Michael Mohill, Leitrim
Faughnan, Patrick Annaduff, Leitrim
Faughnan, Patrick Mohill, Leitrim
Faughnan, Peter Annaduff, Leitrim
Faughnan, Thady Cloone, Leitrim
Faughnan, Thady Mohill, Leitrim
Faughnan, Thomas Annaduff, Leitrim
Faughnan, James Ballintemple, Cavan
Faughnan, Patrick Ballintemple, Cavan
Faughnan, Bryan Longford,Longford

Are you part of the Winnie's family?
I am afraid my generation don't know that many of our first cousins let alone second.I hear about eveyone through my parents but my children are keen to know if they have any more relations especially my oldest daughter Niamh who is finishing her last year at Trinity.

My great great grandfather Malachi Faughnan came to the U.S. with his wife Winifred Higgins around 1847 along with their son Hugh. We have no knowledge of brothers or sisters left back in Ireland but one would assume he was not an only child. Do you have info on this connection?

Thanks

Barbara

Hi Donal.very interesting. Never heard my mother nor Aunty Lily mention a dead sister. Cathal Faughnan, a son of Tom Faughnan, son of Alice and Peter has a daughter called Alice. Also either himself or his brother Malachy has a Peter. I have a brother Peter called after his granddad too.
I have some stuff somewhere about granny Alice as I call her and a couple of pics. They had businesses in Belfast, Also an oil paining of her that by some miracle was passed down to me.
When Granny Alice ( her father was John Long) was born in Callan Co Kilkenny her mother died and Granny Alice was taken to Belfast by a Mrs Stott.
I will fish out what I have and post it, it was my brother John that started to glean knowledge as best he could.
You did not say where you are! and who you married.!!!! hahaha very remiss of you.:))
I remember Stephen Faughnan up in Leitrim, (my eldest is a boy and he is called Stephen after him) and my mother's Aunt B. She must have been a sister of Peter's. Kitty Kiernan, from Granard in Longford and who was engaged to the famous and legendary Michael Collins was a cousin of my mother's on Peter Faughnan's side. I also remember going with a churn full of milk to the creamery in a donkey and cart with Aunt B., have a pic of them somewhere and have a pic of Granddad Peter Faughnan. He was a policeman.
I would really need your email address to send all this.
When Maura was 3 years old, her father died of meningitis
and at that time, no Social Welfare,so hardship for Aunty Kathleen, and Maura lived with my mother and father for 3 years in England. There might be still a pic there too. I remember well the house in Clontarf where Maura and Ronald lived and a dog called Sparky. haha
Hope this keeps you all going for now
cheers Ann
Hi Ann
My wife is one of Maura's daughters, so obviously the other names you mention are familiar to me. I originally got a list of the Belfast Faughnan names from Lily years ago but never followed up on them until a few days ago when I checked out 1911 Belfast Census which is recently available online on National Archives of Ireland website. However, the census form does not list all the children of the marriage. The list of names I originally received from Lily included both Alice Long and a daughter Alice but I have not been able to verify the latter. However, according to my information, the younger Alice died age 3 and the 1911 census confirms that, at the time, there were 8 children alive from 9 originally born to the marriage.
I was hoping to get more information on both Peter Faughnan's family and also on Alice Long's but I don't have any specific details on them, other than the fact that Peter was originally from Leitrim and Alice from Belfast.

Hello Donal. yes all correct! My other was Winifred(Winnie)
BTW where are you based? Peter Faughnan was my grandfather.
The son Malachi went to America and had a son, I think also Malachi I am trying to trace what happened to him. His brother Patrick was in Real Estate in America too, married Josie no issue. There was no Alice, Alice was his wife nee Long and there was also Kathleen, so I don't understand where your wife comes in, Aunty Kathleen had 2 daughters Eily and Maura and a son John. Is she the daughter of one of the girls?
cheers
Ann

Ann
I'm checking out my wife's greatgrandfather, Peter Faughnan, who was born in Leitrim in the 1860s but was living in Belfast in 1911. He had a son Malachy/Malachi but I'm not sure what became of him. My wife's grandmother (Malachy/Malachi's sister) was Kathleen Faughnan and her siblings also included Josephine, Winefrid (Winnie), Ellen Elizabeth (Lily), Alice, Thomas, Patrick and Peter. Some of the family may have been born in Co Monaghan before the family moved to Belfast.
Do these details link with yours?
Donal F
Were your Shanleys in St. Louis Mo. about 1870? Have a Marie Shanley married to my great grandfather's brother Edward. Also, found a Barney Shanley on 1880 census. Regarding your McWeeney surname, I may have that name in my lineage also. From my great grandmother's death record, her mother's maiden name looked like McSweeney ( had never heard of McWeeney). Just recently while in St. Louis looking for ancestors, I have found the name McWeeney/McQueeney popping up as godparents to my grandfather and some of his siblings: Mary McWeeney (with Edward Finnegan)as sponsor for 1894 baptism and (with Thomas Hubbard)at an 1883 baptism, Patrick McWeeney (with Anna Floyd) at the 1878 baptism of my grandfather Michael Joseph Finnegan, Patrick McWeeney (and Catherine Hubbard) at the 1896 baptism of Richard Finnegan, Michael McQueeney/McWeeney with Mary Finnegan at the 1889 baptism of Robert Finnegan. I looked at my copy of the church record for my ggrandmother's wedding and what I had thought was just an unusual way of spelling McSweeney now looks like McWeeny. GGrandmother was Rose Floyd, daughter of Robert Floyd and Mary McWeeny. Also found a tombstone with the McWeeny name on it next to my grandfather's brother's grave marker at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis, MO. Supposedly, Rose came from Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim (this info is from my aunt who is deceased-I have no primary source for Rose's birth) about 1872 according to the 1900 & 1910 census. Contact me at georgia@corpsie.com if anything connects with your research. Thanks.

Faughnans of Cattan Lake

I am doing a little amateur genealogy and was wondering what info someone might be able to share.

My father is from a very large family in the village of Kiltycrevagh, Ballinamuck, County Longford Ireland. He and most of the family had emigrated to the USA by the late 50's. His father, Charles Faughnan born around 1880, (died in Ireland 1952) was the local tailor & the family was known as the "Tailor Faughnans". Charles was originally from Cattan Lake in Leitrim. Charles married my Grandmother, the former Ellen McKenna in 1906.

Charles brother was James "The Soldier" Faughnan. James stayed in Leitrim as did his son John who had a large family of which Phil Faughnan and his wife Agnes Cullum from Rookie raised their family in the 1960 & 70's, and they (Fintan and Gerrad) are still in the Cattan Lake homestead with their family.

Charles had another brother John (Jack) the Barber

I am looking specificaaly for any information on who Charles father was. Any details, copies of documents or sources to obtain info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

Last time I posted a message I was looking for info on Great-Grandpa Bernard Faughnan. Well, I found his grave locally (Saginaw, MI) -- and have since found his brother, Louis, and his parents, Patrick and Clara, in Duluth, MN. Louis's death certificate said he was born in Pembroke, Canada and his Mother's name was Martha (McFaden). My grandpa Bernard's info just says born in Canada and his Mother's name was Clara (Matthews or Mattix). Patrick was born in either Canada or Ireland - conflicting info on this. Clara may have been born in Canada or Pennsylvania. Anyone have any information on this group of people?? thanks. Jill

Further into my book Hugh had a son George who married Mary Cassidy. They had a son Robert who married Edyth Raymond and had daughters Virginia, Roberta and a son Douglas. Virginia married Patrick O'Sullivan. If my book is accurate Virginia married July 1957 and had the following children - Eileen, John, Ailisha, Patrick and Hugh.

The Faughnan originally came from Rinn, Co. Leitrim. A Michael Kelly (my great grandfather) was sponsor at baptism of Ann Faughnan daughter of Michael Faughnan and Mary Fallon of Ballagh, Newtownforbes,Co.Longford on 24th January 1887. There was also a Margaret Faughnan born 3rd March 1866 at Rinn, Co.Leitrim whose parents were John Faughnan & Bridget Kelly. These may be related to Malachy
