WEST BRANCH, Iowa - Floyd Thomas Fawcett, 95, West Branch, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006, at Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, West Branch, after a brief illness.
Burial will be at Hickory Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Fawcett was born July 25, 1911, near West Branch, the son of Logan M. and Malissa R. Thomas Fawcett. He married Mary Helen Miller on May 20, 1939, at the Methodist Church in Marshalltown.
As a senior, he was a member of the 1929 undefeated West Branch football team. He attended William Penn College and later graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor of science in animal husbandry.
While at ISU he met his wife on a blind date. After their marriage, they lived and worked on the family farm near Centerdale for more than 60 years.
He was a lifelong member of the West Branch Conservative Friends Meeting and served on the Scattergood Friends School Committee. He was very active in the West Branch community and served in many capacities including member and president of the West Branch School Board, member of the West Branch Bank Board for more than 50 years and a founding member of the Herbert Hoover Birthplace Society. He later served as a trustee of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association from 1958 until the time of his death in various capacities including president and vice chairman. He was also a member of the West Branch Lions Club, West Branch Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, West Branch Heritage Foundation, Cedar County Conservation Board and the West Branch Development Commission. His interest in the welfare of the West Branch community continued until his death.
Survivors include his children, Martha Luke and husband Ken of West Branch and Palm Coast, Fla., John Fawcett and friend Claudine Weiher of Washington D.C., Ken Fawcett and wife Helen of West Branch and Margie Green and husband Tim of Cape Coral, Fla.; grandchildren, Kendra Stuart and friend David Albaugh of West Branch, Kyle Stuart and wife Linda of Wichita, Kan., Kent Stuart and wife MarKay of West Branch, Allen Fawcett and Elaine Zimmerman of Washington D.C., Katherine Fawcett and friend Lee Suggs of Cleveland, Ohio, Leanna Vincent and husband Troy of Iowa City, Thomas Fawcett and wife Jennifer of Ames, Logan Kraus of Orlando, Fla., Andy Kraus of Cape Coral; great-grandchildren, Ashley Schabilion and husband Truman of Eden Prairie, Minn., Adam Stuart of Orlando, Lindsay Stuart, Kaitlyn Stuart and Braden Stuart of Wichita and Owen Fawcett of Washington D.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two brothers, Everett and Alfred.
