Fawcetts/Faucets in Braddock

When my grandmother Faucet came to "Braddock Field", now Braddock, Allegheny Co.,PA, in 1864, there were already in residence three families of Fawcetts. Certainly they were there in the 1870 census. Whether they were related to the Allegheny City Fawcetts I don't know, but you mispellers of the name should check it out. allendmc@cableone.net

I hope someone out there can help us. My Grandfather is Jesse Homer Fawcett, and his Father was Melville Adolphus Fawcett who was married to Susan Jane Shipman. We found her parents, but every document we find of Melvilles says parents, none. We understand that Melville's parents were from Ireland but moved to the states before he was born in 1836, 37 or 38. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much..............Lynn/celtic544@msn.com

For over a year, Anthea Kalazich and myself have been trying to determine if Anthea's "William Fawcett of Yorkshire (1583)" and Thomas and Elizabeth (Wilkinson) Fawcett (1762) of Ravenstonedale had been related.
Part of Thomas Fawcett's family emigrated to the US in 1831 and finally settled in the Pittsburgh, PA area.
Anthea's ancestors settled in Australia. Robert Fawcett sailed to Australia in February 1853.
With the DNA tested from Anthea's cousin Jon and my husband Richard, we have a match! 99.97% and it goes back 24 generations- 600 years. The most recent common ancestor (MRCA) is between 4 and 8 generations. They had tested with the 37 Marker DNA test.
This is very exciting and proof positive that these two families are related!

Hi all,

These recent postings make me wonder if there is a connection after all. Here is what I have regarding my Fawcetts now (I've learned a lot more since my last post):

They came from Killanummery RC Parish in County Leitrim. There appear to be a large family group there. Here are some names:

John Faucet m. Margaret Kaveney (1836)
Edward Fawcett m. Bridget Mooney (1839) - These are my gg-grandparents
Pat Faucett m. Mary Levison (1840)
Ann Faucett m. Michael Horan (1842)
Bridget Faucett m. James Geraghty (1845)
Daniel Faucett m. Honor (last name missing) (1845)

Edward and Bridget had the following children:

Francis (1939)
Joseph (1847) - my great-great grandfather
Marie (1850)
Anna (1852)
Anna (1855)

I'm curious about your Fawcetts, as I noticed that you have an Edward Francis. The names Edward and Francis appear many, many times in my line, and they hardly ever appear at all outside of it. This has made it much easier to do the work because the names are fairly rare for Fawcett families.

If any of this looks promising, please let me know. I have considerably more information.
Hi Nancy and Judy,

I just HAVE to put in a "hello". Thanks, Nancy for telling me about this thread.

Judy, please let me introduce myself. I'm Denaha Doss, youngest daughter of Mayme Ellen Dotson Doss (youngest daughter of Annie Byrd Fawcett Dotson)and Nancy's cousin. Several years ago I tried to track a lot of this information down and couldn't get much at all. It is so wonderful to see all of this information and such scandal!!!

Thank you for all of your input. I wish I could fill in some gaps but I don't have any information either. I do believe that, at one time, that family bible was in my home but when my mom died recently I didn't find it there. Unfortunately there was some clearing out that was done without my supervision so it may have been discarded which is quite a loss. I do remember seeing it. I have copies of the handwritten pages that were in that book, though. I will search them out and see if I can add anything to this discussion.

Wonderful to "meet" you.
Dj

denahad@hotmail.com

I am just setting out on researching my family tree and I have been given a tree that a relative worked on in order to help me. He has found that we are related to the Fawcetts of Ravenstonedale and he has researched up to John Fawcett born in 1684 or 1691. My great grandmother was Kathleen Fawcett born in 1899. Have you got any tips or advice for me continuing my research?
I noticed that you also have Gibsons listed; my Lougheed line is linked to Joseph Gibson and Charlotte Bodell; their son James moved west to the Strathcona/Edmonton area of Alberta.

Sherry (sherry_pfeffer@rogers.com)

Continuing my saga of Willie….While he lived in Chicago, Willie was a grounds keeper for a baseball park. At some point he moved to California where he died 3 Nov 1962 in Los Angeles.

The last child, your grandmother, according to the 1900 census, was born 6 May 1885. Seems that her birth date could be a multiple choice question, but I always like to believe that the earliest document you have for someone is the most correct one. 1900 is pretty early and she was still a child….folks tend to forget or distort as they grow older (in general). BTW I am a certificated genealogist, so I have been doing a lot of genealogy over the years, so sorry if I sound matter-a-fact about things like this, but it comes from many years of experience in the field.

Annie was referred to as “Birdie” in the 1900 census…what a cute interpretation of her middle name????? Until you told me it was Byrd, I was wondering how she got a name like that. I have a marriage guess of around 1907 for her….do you know when she was married to Edwin Bruce Dotson? I have that they had 8 children….am I missing any? Victoria, b. ca 1908; George, b. ca 1911; Bruce, b. ca 1912; Alonzo, b. ca 1915; Joseph, b. ca 1916; Birdie E., b. ca 1918; Mary Eva, b. ca 1921; and Mayme, b. ca 1923….all born in Texas. If you have exact birthdates and would be willing to share, I will update my database to the correct dates as these are only the approximations I made from the censuses.

I also have that your grandmother died 25 Oct 1975 in Atlanta, Cass Co., TX, and is buried in Pine Crest Cemetery.

Please feel free to correct me if I have misinformation.

Judy McAuliffe

You mentioned that the only child born in the US was your grandmother, Annie, but I have a John Fawcett, 17 yrs. old, b. in Feb 1883 in Indian Territory in this family in the 1900 census, where they lived in Dallas on Juliett Street.

“Willie” was 21 yrs. old and was a house mover in 1900, according to the census. In 1910 he was married one year to a Nellie and said he was doing house construction. In 1920 he was living in a boarding house in Dallas with his wife, Nettie , and was a public laborer. BTW I think Nellie and Nettie are two different people. Nellie was only 18 yrs. old in 1910 and said she was born in Texas; Nettie was 49 yrs. old and born in Iowa in 1920. I think Nettie’s last name was formerly, Denison, because there are two children, in this family are referred to as “stepson” and a “daughter”, living with them in 1930, when they lived in Chicago. One was Edna Surber, who said her father was born in Michigan and her mother was born in Texas. This seems to be a daughter of William and Nettie, but at 37 yrs. old, she would be too old to be his child….either the age is wrong or ?????????? The stepson is Bernard Denison, who said he and his parents were born in Texas. How could he be a son of either? Do you know if Willie had any children?

Judy McAuliffe
