Thanks for the suggestions, James. My mother's DNA test (DNA Consultants) seems to show strong Roma-Gypsy. Her grandparents emigrated from the Shetland Islands to the U.S. in the early 1880s. My best guess is that ancestors tried to conceal their gypsy heritage after migrating to the Shetlands. They probably escaped from Aberdeen to possibly save their lives - 1600s or 1700s - in order to try to find some peace. No one ever told descendants this. I was astounded when I got Mom's results. She's 95 years old. In California her grandparents were staid farmers. I've found only hints that gypsies lived in Shetland. I think it has always been "covered up." Sorry, but my research was not extensive enough to cover that and I'm no longer researching in that area.

I would suggest you approach Tony Gott at http://www.bayanne.co.uk/Genealogy/Gene.html as he holds a great deal of information and would be in a better position to help than me.

Coincidentally, I expect to be in Shetland on holiday at the beginning of October.

You mention gypsies. Are these true Romany Gypsies or just Travellers?

Have you ever heard of the Feas of Orkney being linked to the Faa family in Scotland who were gypsies? I have an ancestor in the Shetland Islands named Penelope Fea who may have been connected to the Faas. Penelope Fea married Andrew Harper - both born about 1742. Thanks for considering this.

I've been going through your various postings and am interested in the same geographical area - Stronsay, Orkney; and some names, Fea, Fotheringham, Miller.

I've just started researching these names for a friend and was in Stronsay 2 weeks ago, particularly Airy with present owners. I also have contact with a friend in NZ who is looking similarly. Shearer and Miller starts me off right now.

I kind of feel we may have a connection of sorts here.

I live in Scotland. (Visited Rockhampton up to Townsville years ago)

I am researching the family of Helen Fea who married Henry Fotheringham in Stronsay c 1770's. Her parents were Captain Peter Fea and wife Janet Fea. Janet's parents were Patrick Fea II of Kirkbuster and Barbara Fea daughter of Charles Fea I of Airy and wife Barbara Mein.Patrick and Barbara are believed to have been cousins. Would appreciate any info about this family or any emails from other descendants.

My son Michael has just left Stronsay where he was visiting his 4th cousin once removed Ralph Fotheringhame.

I think he is descended from Captain Fea and we have some notes somewhere but I will have to check them.

I'm corresponding with Fea researchers in Scotland and New Zealand about the Fea descendants from an island north of Scotland called Orkney. It is very interesting and there should be a website out this year with a lot of history. Let me know if you want information or have information to share. I'm a descendant of Charles Fea II and Mary Ann Strouts who immigrated to the U.S. in the 1800's from England.

I am a descendant of Thomas Brown Fea who immigrated from Scotland in 1853. He had a son Nixon Fea who I know very little about. He was born about 1862 (8 in 1870 census)(19 in 1880 census). After his fathers death his mother moved to the state of Washington. In his mother's obit (1909) Nixon was living in Hampton, Arkansas.That's all I know about him, but the name 'Nixon' caught my eye in your message, and the Fea name being unusal,I thought I would write. I don't know where he was in the 1900-1910 census.If you find anything let me know.

Thanks Jerry, Im sure we are related somewhere down the line, but I dont know where. Theres not very many Fea's around, but my husbands grandfather was Montie Fea b. 1/2/1901 d. 7/1982 buried in Antioch Cemetery in Buna, Texas. I don't really have any other Fea names, because my husband's father died when he was very young and his mother remarried. If I ever find the link, I'll be glad to contact you. Thanks anyway.

My grandfather Fea had two sons, John and Sisto, twins, born in San Felice Circeo, Italy, in 1910. John is alive and almost 90, Sisto is dead. They had five male children: John, Joseph, Tony, Andrew and Sisto. All were born between 1936 and 1946 and all but Andrew are still alive with families of their own, including about 10 male bearers of the Fea name. Let me know if any of this is helpfull

I don't know if this is of any help, but my mother's maiden name was Fea. My grandfather, Andrea Fea, immigrated to the US from a small town in the Italian Abruzzi called Colepardo. He settled, finally, in West Orange, NJ, after working in the construction of a series of railroad bridges throughout Pennsylvania between 1911 and 1920. He had six children, but only two boys, who had a total of five male children between 1938 and 1944. Let me know if this is of any help.

I married into the Fea family, but my husband's father died when he was 6 months old. His fathers name was Donald Nixon Fea. Donalds parents were Montie and Mamie Fea. We went to Mamies funeral a couple of years back and no one there had any info. My husband says that his mother tried to approach Mamie years ago, and she wouldnt tell her anything.
