Early Baptismal Records of the Sanner Evangelical Lutheran & Reformed Church 1782-1850, Somerset Co, PA

Early Baptismal Records of the Sanner Evangelical Lutheran & Reformed Church 1782-1850, Somerset Co, PA
Compiled by Dorothy Yoder Coffman
1988

"Original in German, translated in 1926 by Dr Ezra C Saylor. There is a second list on LDS Microfilm C 12017, #022056."

Datasets in this publication:

Sanner Luthern Reformed Curch Baptisms - p 1
Communicants, New Members 1819-1851, p 57
Sanner Evangelical Baptisms - p 93 <<<<<<<< Vetter records here
Communicants - 1835-1849 p 121
Mull's Church Baptismal Records - p 138

Each data set has separate indexes, and there are separate indexes for sponsors vs children & parents. The preface says the location of the church was "formerly" of Milford, Somerset, Pennsylvania; apparently referring to branching off into different churches after these records were compiled.

_____________________

ABSTRACTS OF "VETTER" BAPTISMS
From: Sanner Evangelical Baptisms 1795-1830
(ie not from Lutheran Section)

Pg 95, No. 13, John Jacob, son of VETTER, Jacob & Maria, sponsored by parents, born 03/02/1796, bapt 04/03/1796

Pg 95, No. 14, John Solomon, son of VETTER, Jacob & Maria, sponsored by OSSWALD, John, born 02/08/1794, bapt 03/01/1796.

Pg 98, No. 53, Eva Catherine, daughter of VETTER, Jacob & Maria, sponsored by SCHNEIDER, Gerbald (is this Dewalt? Or maybe Gerhardt? There was a Gerhardt, wife of Jacob Schneider elsewhere in these records.) & Clara, born 01/16/1798, bapt 03/18/1798
_____________

Note the birth dates above agree with the birth dates for these three at pg 1 of the Jacob Feather Genealogy (which doesn't cite sources).

There are many more references to Dewalt & Clara Schneider and the baptisms of their children and grandchildren in this set of baptisms.

There were several Jacob Fethers in Pennsylvania about this time. The 1800 census in Turkeyfoot Twp (ancestry.com says Berlin - a mistaken reading of the census page where Berlin ended and Turkeyfoot started), Somerset, PA is a perfect fit. The Feather Genealogy indicates the family moved to Preston Co, VA (now WV) in 1804.
__________________

A Web Page discussing Places that came from the Old Bedford County:

http://www.pa-roots.com/bedford/history/originoftownships.ht...
__________________

Who were the Evangelicals vs the Lutherans? Are they the precursor to a current day protestant church? The preface to the book says: "The Lutherans of Sanner's, together with others, formed a new charge after 1971, which is now called St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, and is located in Lockwood."
___________________

Other works by Ezra Saylor, who is credited above with the translation from German to English; and which appear to offer much more information about Somerset County and environs.

http://www.ecsaylor.org/his_work.htm

Ezra Saylor Home Page:

http://www.ecsaylor.org/
Christian Feather - Somerset Co, PA - Probate - 1799

I came across the following in a library:

Somerset County Wills Index 1795-1900

and found entries for:

Feather, Christian - 1799, File 10
Snyder, Dewalt, 1828, File 33

I wrote to: Historical and Genealogical Society of Somerset County, PA, in 1997 for copies of documents in these probates.

They sent me what they had on Christian Feather.
They said Dewalt Snyder's file was not filmed, can't find, and presumed lost.
_______________________

The copy I have is from a microfilm reader printer (white text on black background) and is very difficult to read. It appears there is no will, but was an intestate probate. Since I can't read it word for word, I'll try to extract what I can. In the meantime, don't hesitate to write or call the genealogy society and ask for a copy yourself. Maybe the technology is better after 15 years, or maybe they'll just have a better printer.

Document 1

Appears to be a folded probate cover or envelope. It appears to be about the size of a business envelope. Labelled Christian Feather, 1799, No 10

Document 2
Summary of accounting of:
Estate of Christian Feather
Administratrix: Mary Feather
Date of settlement: 09/07?/1802

Signature Mary Feather, admx
Signature Morgan Rhees (maybe court clerk or judge?)
Value of gross estate: $41.88
Paid to: Isaiah Espy $2.21
Paid for: stamp paper: $.50
"Cash paid" for xxx???: $2.00
"Cash paid" for Pasting?? and copy: $3.25
Allowed to the accountant: (ditto)

Net Estate: $33.9[?]

Document 3
(I believe certificate of inventory)
Date: 03/11/1799
Apparently took inventory: James & Thomas Wilson
Signed Certificate: John Leech
(It appears John Leech is an officer of the court certifying that James & Thomas Wilson are personally giving him the inventory)

Document 4
Estate Inventory
A listing of assets and values
Date: 03/11/1799
Signed by Thomas & James Wilson

Consisting of bed & bedding, "book debt" and kitchen utensils and etc.

The total of the inventory listing is L15.14.1, as compared to $41.88 in the summary. I don't know if there was a pound or pieces of eight conversion to dollars, or if there is something added to the 1799 inventory before the 1802 settlement.

Documents 5 and 6
This is some kind of document involving Mary Feather, Admx, Josiah Espy, James Wilson, and Jacob Schneider involving something. I can't quite make out what the nature of the document is.

__________________

It would appear that he died at some point before 03/11/1799, and his wife survived him past 1802. Unfortunately, I am not seeing any mention of Clarissa or Jacob, the asserted children of Christian Feather. (Christian and Jacob were listed together on the King of Prussia and Joseph and Maria are asserted to be buried in the small family cemetery on Dewalt Schneider's homestead - Clarissa (also sometimes given as Anna Clara) being the wife of Dewalt Schneider.

HOWEVER, there are a Thomas and a James Wilson in the list of witnesses of Jacob Feather's wedding, which corresponds to the two names that took Christian Feather's inventory. Those two names in these two documents gives some corroboration to the Jacob Feather who married Mary Connoly is the son of this Christian and they could very well be the Christian and Jacob Vatter listed on the King of Prussia in 1775.
__________________

MORGAN RHEES

It is assumed the Morgan Rhees above was some kind of a court clerk, or even a judge. Here is a biography of a man of a man of this name, who moved late in his life to Somerset County and may be this man (or a namesake within his family?). He led a rather colorful life.

http://www.pagenweb.org/~somerset/bios/Rhees_Morgan-John-b17...

Jacob Feather Revolutionary War Pension File

Jacob Feather Revolutionary War Pension File

NARA Revolutionary War Pension Application Files, Roll 961 (Fay-Fei)

Info on Jacket Cover:
Feather, Jacob (Feathers, Fetter)
W7255
BLWT 2023-160-55

Pretty thick file - about 50 pages. My copies are printed from a micro-film reader. I used the micro-film at the LDS Genealogy Library in West Los Angeles.

Below comments are not verbatim transcriptions. Due to the volume of information, I extracted what I thought was important and paraphrased it.

Mary (apparently referring to widow/applicant)

___________________

Certificate of Pension to commence 03/04/1848, at $70.55 per annum, issued 09/185(3?5?) - Jacob Feathers in PA Roll: Fetter.

_____________________

05/09/1837: Letter from Mary Feather, age 67 years, Preston, Virginia, stating she was applying for a pension. Excerpts:

"husband is now deceased... departed life 05/22/1832"
"he.. had .. informed her frequent that that he belonged to a volunteer company during the... Revolution and served five years"
".... his captains were Samuel Morris or Morrison, his Colonels name was Miflen. .... he also served under Luke Morris.."
"Jacob... was living in Philadelphia at the time he entered the army.."
"she understood from ... Jacob.. that he was in the following battles: "towet?" (Trenton?), Torenta, Priacata (Princeton?), and at Yorktown at the surrender of ... Cornwallis."

Mary (her x mark) Feathers

This affidavit was signed by a Charles Byne, representing the Clerk of the Preston County Court.

___________________

Marriage Certificate, signed by witnesses
Jacob Fetter to Mary Connoly, 05/04/1791

___________________

03/20/1855 - Revolutionary War Claim for Bounty Land
Mary Feather, age 84, appeared personally before John Feather, Justice of Peace within Preston Co, VA... and is receiving pension of $70.55 since 03/04/1848. She was married to said Jacob Feather in Bedford Co, PA (now Somerset), on 05/24/1792 (sic should be 05/24/1791). Maiden name was Conley. She is making this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the Bounty Land under the act of Mar 3 1855

[Note: I find no other info re Bounty Land in the file.nmt]
__________________

12/09/1851 - Affidavit of sons John and Adam Feather

John age 57
Adam age 52
"... they are sons of Jacob and Mary Feather..."
that they recall their father telling them about his Revolutionary service and they believe he was in service over 3 years and was a volunteer and was in PA units...
... moved to Monongalia, PA about 1810

____________________

LAW PASSED BY PA LEGISLATURE

"Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Pennsylvania... that the State Treasurer .. is required to pay to... Mary Feather of Preston Co, VA, $40 as a gratuity and an annuity for life to be paid half yearly, commencing 01/01/1838.

_____________________

AFFIDAVIT APPOINTING LAWYERS

10/11/18?7 (1847?)
Mary Feather appointed Evans and Faut her lawyers.

_____________________

06/21/1853 - from Washington, DC
LETTER RE JOHN BYRNE OF PRESTON CO COURT FROM WASHINGTON ATTORNEYS EVANS & FAUT

It's kind of hard to read, but it appears the lawyers are asking for help with the pension office. They are quoting from Mr Byrne of Preston Co who says "(need help with) old Mrs Mary Feather for a pension", as she needs two soldiers he served with to testify, but they are all dead.

The affidavit then goes on to say "Mr Byrne is a gentleman of great respectability and having been the clerk of the County for many years, is doubtless well acquainted with all the facts in the case. We hope that a re-examiniation of the papers, will authorize you to place her on the Pension Roll."
___________________

CERTIFICATE OF DEATH AND WIDOW

John P Byrne executes an affidavit that Jacob Feather was a soldier of the Revolution, departed this life 05/22/1832 and Mary Feather is his widow, and continues his widow"
__________________

11/20/1857 LETTER FROM LAWYERS TO PENSION OFFICE

Discussing which pension act her pension should be under.

_________________

06/26/1852 AFFIDAVIT BY JOHN Y MURDOCK, JUSTICE OF PEACE OF PRESTON CO CERTIFIED BY JOHN BYRNE, COUNTY CLERK

A recap: John Y Murdock knew a man named Daniel Martin, a Revolutionary War Veteran of the New Jersey line, already proved for a pension, died at 105 years old about 18 months ago. He recalls Daniel Martin lived in the same neighborhood as Jacob Feather, was "personally acqauinted with said Jacob Feather during the greater part of the Revoulutionary War" and that he saw said Feather at Valley Forge, Philadelphia and other places; that they did not belong to the same regiment, but were acquainted with each other before entering the Army. Further, that Feather had served 5 years during the said war, while Martin had served nearly 7 years.

_____________________

06/30/1852 AFFIDAVIT OF ISAAC MARTIN, SON OF DANIEL MARTIN

He is testifying that he recalls his father talking about Jacob Feather being in the Revolution.

_____________________

11/27/1837 AFFIDAVIT OF DANIEL MARTIN THAT HE KNEW JACOB FEATHER DURING THE WAR.

Since this 1837 affidavit is in the file, it is unclear why the Pension Office needed affidavits from the Preston Co JP and Isaac Martin in the 1850s. Maybe they didn't see the 1837 affidavit in the file?

_____________________

Marriage Certificate - Jacob Feather & Mary Connoly - 05/04/1791 - Milford, Bedford now Somerset Co, PA

Marriage Certificate - Jacob Feather & Mary Connoly - 05/04/1791 - Milford, Bedford now Somerset Co, PA

From Revolutionary War Pension Records, LDS Film No. 0970961, Wedding Certificate of Jacob and Mary (Connoly) Fether. (The reason for the marriage certificate being there was that Mary applied as a widow, and had to supply a wedding certificate to prove her relationship to the veteran. It's interesting to ponder that, since the document appears to be an original, ie different handwriting for the signatures, that Mary Connoly had kept that original for almost 50 years (1791-1836), and apparently "gave-up" the original to the Pension folks and they kept it in their files, since this was before photo-copy machines.)

Note the "guests" or "witnesses" named Thomas and James Wilson.

Christian and Jacob Feather - Oath & Allegiance - Philadelphia, 10/09/1775

This book appears under copyright, so I am abstaining from attaching a scan. You should be able to find this reference in a library.

Pennyslvania German Pioneers
(Compiled) by Ralph Beaver Strassburger, LL.D.
Edited by William John Hinke, Ph.D., D.D.
Vol 1 1727-1775
Geneaelogical Publishing Co, Inc, Baltimore, 1980
Pp 762-3

"List 324C At the Court House, Philadelphia, the 9th of Oct 1775. Present: Samuel Powel, Mayor.

The foreigners whose names are underwritten, imported in the ship King of Prussia, William Potts, Master, from Rotterdam but last from Falmouth [England], did this Day take and suscribe the foregoing Oaths & Declarations in the Usual Form. (Consigned to Jacob Viney) (paid by Jacob Viney L5.8.0, the 17th October 1775) (In the list 72).

In the list of 72 names:

Xtian Vatter
Jacob Vatter"

(Note the info in the book is a printed transcription - a copy of the original document appears to be at pp 887-8, where the above names are clearly visible.)

Note the name is German for Father. It seems to have transmuted to: Vatter > Vetter > Fetter > Fether > Feather. Some descendants of Jacob use Feathers.

______________________

These names and ship name and date match the Christian and Jacob Feather described in the Jacob Feather Genealogy by Edna (Davis) Rogers (1980). Jacob's birth date per his headstone (09/10/1759, ie over 16 in 1775) is plausible to have Jacob listed as an adult here and in the colonies in time to be the Jacob Feather whose Pension Records document his Revolutionary War Record.

Note Christian's wife Maria and their daughter, Clarissa or Anna Clara, would not be listed because this is men only.

DeWalt Schneider (Clarissa's husband) is shown in the Sanner church records as having children baptized during the same period as Jacob Feather was having his three oldest baptized there - in 1790s. This corroborates the assertion that Jacob and Clarissa (Feather) Schneider were siblings and children of Christian and Maria.

Joseph and Maria Feather are alleged to be buried in the same small family cemetery as DeWalt and Clarissa (Feather) Schneider, on the Schneider homestead. See Find-A-Grave for photos of DeWalt and Clarissa Schneider's headstones and FAG Memorials for Joseph and Maria:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GScid=...

See Jacob Feather's headstone:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Fe...;

__________________

Additional info requested:

Can anyone describe the King of Prussia?
Dimensions? No of Sails? no of crew? etc.
Normal number of passengers - how crowded was it?
How long did the trip take?
Did the passengers ever get to walk the deck?
Is there any clue of the price of a ticket or the time of indenture if indentured?

Is there any clue to be found in Rotterdam, Germany, of the origins of the passengers??

Thank you for the info, but it is the wrong Sam Feather. That one is Samuel Scott and died in 1899. I have My Sam according to his WW1 draft signed Sam Smith Feather and his tombstone in Doniphan. lists his BD as 1883. and also lists his wife as Floy. and according to my father that is correct info.

The Genealogy of Jacob and Mary (Connoly) Feather, Edna Rogers, 1980, pg 321, gives:

Samuel S Feather born 08/28/1878, Kingwood, Preston County, WV; married Floe Bumgardner

Her Feather number she assigns to him is 1978. That is simply an internal numbering system for Feathers in the book.

Could your birthdate be a baptism date?

Parents were David Summers and Nancy Jane Ervin. He was a great-grandson of the Revolutionary War Veteran and German immigrant Jacob Vatter/Feather.

Have you searched census records for your guy? I see various census entries during the years for David Summers with wife Nancy. He has a 2 year old Samuel S in his house in the 1880 census.

Woodrow Feather/George C. Feather

He is originally from, I believe, Stilwell, OK. I don't know if he lived any other places before he moved to Wisconsin. He is my biological father but I don't remember him, because I was only about two years old when he left Wisconsin. I believe he moved to San Bernardino, CA, or somewhere in that area. I think that he would be in his seventies, but I don't even know if he is still alive. I am now almost thirty years old, and do not know anyone from his side of my family. I am more interested in meeting my relatives than I am in meeting my father. If anyone knows of anyone related to him, or even anyone with the last name Feather from the Stilwell, OK or surrounding areas any help would be appreciated. I am also related to a George C. Feather, but am unsure of the exact relation.

I know that one of his decendants was a Harrold Wheater/feather wheater, but past that i dont know much. Hopefully that is of interest to you. If there is any further info you can give me that would be very much appreicated
Andrew

Catherine Feather and Casper Hinkle (b. 1774-84) had at least one child, Martha (b. 12-19-1804 in PA). Martha, in turn, married David Cooper on 04-04-1820 in PA. I can't take it back any farther, but I have lineage in this direction down several lines, and would like to match up with any "unknowns."
I had a friend with this name when I lived in Oxenhope
30 years ago and they had been in Oxenhope for a lot of years her Dad ran a garage in Oxenhope called Feathers garage which was at the bottom of Best Lane in Oxenhope. Elizabeth had a lot of Brothers and sisters one called Pauline another called Gillian and also a brother but I can not remember his name.
The name Denby was around also. I reckon if you advertised in the Dalesman Mag you would get some replies, has I think there will still be some of these names around that sleepy village.
Bye for now

Possibly base-born, particularly given the comments about bastardy in Haworth in the link above.
