Hello! My name is Tina Donnerbauer (maiden name donnerbauer) Kwarciany. My great great grandfather was Leopold Donnerbauer, born in Schwarzenburg, Austria on 15 Nov 1861. I have been trying to find any information on him prior to his immigration to the US in 1887. I see you were doing some research on the Donnerbauer surname some years ago. Did you find much information on him? Maybe we can compare notes! I have my family tree info listed on Ancestry.com. You should be able to log in with your rootsweb signin name/password. I would very much love to share family information/photos with you! I look forward to your response. Thank you!
Tina Donnerbauer
tina2curly@hotmail.com

I am also researching the Fechter surname. My Fechter's are from France (Alsace-Lorraine). My 3rd great-grandfather is Berhard Fechter. He came to the US in the late 1880's and settled in Buffalo, NY (Erie County). He married a woman named Mary - I don't know her last name, but she was born in 1838 in France and died on 8-23-1910. They had at least six children that I know of. My 2nd great-grandfather was their oldest son:

Berhard b. 1867
m. 1891 (possibly in France)
d. 1/16/1959 in New York
He married Mary A. Kreutzbender and continued to live on Johnson St. in Buffalo, New York (Erie County). They had three children, Catherine, Anna and Frank. Catherine is my great-grandmother. She was born on 10-10-1896 in Buffalo, NY. She married William Ball on May 20, 1919, and she died on 2/27/1990 in Buffalo, NY. They had three children, Alfred, Evelyn and Marion. Alfred was my grandfather. Evelyn died as a very young child. Marion is still living.

Anyone having any info on these Fechter's, please feel free to contact me. I have census info and other info I would love to share.

Beth Lyon
BethLyon@adelphia.net

weisskirchen (bela crkva) Fechters/Beckers

I am trying to track down the validity and maybe concrete records for this family story of my wife's family - "Johann Feckter (FECHTER) was the mayor (Burgermeister) of the Austrian town of Weisskirchen, where he lived in 1848-1850. Johann had a son, Jacob Fechter (Feckter), born around 1850. Young Jacob married a local girl named Elizabeth BECKER, in 1872, whose family owned some vineyards in the area and operated a wine company. Elizabeth was the 12th child of her father and the only child of her mother, much younger than her father, who had married Mr. Becker when he was a widower. Her only friend during her teen years was her half-brother Carl Becker, who was bout ten years older than she was. Carl Becker and his wife, Filomena LUTZ Becker, left Europe and came to the United States in 1870, to St. Louis, Missouri."

Obviously with the reference to wine production, Bela Crkva fits as the Weisskirchen in the story, as do immigration records for Jacob and Elizabeths' sons, Johann and Jacob. On the Bela Crkva history page, it lists the first 'civilian' mayor as of 1872. Where might I find information for prior to that date as far as mayors (burgermeisters) and any information of the wineries of that era?

Thank You!

Geo. Fechter & Son operated as "Clothiers and Furnishers" from their shop in Colorado Springs, CO which was located at the corner of Tejon & Huerfano streets. The Peoples Bank was also located at this intersectiom (1874-1885). Geo, Fechter handed out $3 advertising notes with this address printed on them. I recently acquired one at auction and they are quite rare. The note is 1880 circa. A scanned copy is attached.

My problem is that great, great grandfather Fechter arrived in the US and disappeared; last heard of in WI. His wife and sons came to the US to find him - no luck. I haven't been able to find him either. Joseph is a family name for us but a number of generations back; Georges and George Williams took over. I'll dig to find the Joseph info and try to correlate it to an Anna, etc. In the meantime, good luck.

Pat.

I don't think I am going to be much help. I have been able to come up with very little information about my group of Fechters in Europe. A mother (first name unknown, married name "Fechter") came from southern Germany bringing two sons: George and Joseph. I do not know if there were any girls. She was seeking a husband who had come to the US to establish a home and bring over the family. The last letter she received from him was from Manitowoc, WI. She arrived in Manitowoc, couldn't find any further traces of him and stayed put in case he turned up again. Her son, George W. Fechter, was either my gg or g grandfather. My family seems to be stuck on naming eldest sons George William and when George and Joseph had sons, guess what they named them? Yup. Makes research fun! And the living Fechters are remarkably unclear about just which GW was which. I wonder if the peculiarity of first sons being GWs went on overseas too.

Again, I don't think you're particularlly interested in all that but if it helps or if you happen to know anything that fits in, please give me a hollar. In the meantime, it's been fun. Regards, Pat.

It was awful enough trying to get just the few I knew personally tied down. The family uses the names interchangably, expecting the hearer or reader to know who is being referred to by imbedded evidence. Do you find that in research as well or is it just my group?

Hi. It seems that George was a very popular name for the Fechter's...I have traced my family back to a George Fechter from Baden German, born in 1834. He had a son named George also , and it seems every generation since has had a least one George! I just thought I would share that..it gets confusing in census stuff and all with all these George Fechters!

Both of these names continually show in my family. Usually they are together (i.e.: George William Fechter). They are used as first names when two of more "George Williams" are alive at one time.

If we are somewhere in the same family, I will help you draw an end to my branch. There are no more sons and this line will stop with my father, George william Fechter.

Please let me know if you think we belong anywhere together.

Also, did you know that an actor, Edward Fechter, gave Charles Dickens the small house which was re-built on the grounds of Dickns' home? It was in that small house that Dickens is supposed to have written most of his later work.

Benjamin Fechtor (went by Factor in US I think) born ca 1826 at Stundwiller, Bas Rhin, Alsace-Lorraine, France (spoke German and claimed they were from Germany on most census records)
He married 5 NOV 1849 at Coshocton Co., OH to Katherine Aschbacher b.7 JUN 1830 Alsace, France d.26 AUG 1916 Mt. Sterling, Brown, IL.

Now, my records all have FACTOR because that's the way the descendants spelled it. I don't know what they actually went by.
Benjamin & Katherine had 11 children, among them were George W. b. ca 1850; John b. ca 1852; These are almost too young to have served in the Civil War, but it's not only the names, this group went to Quincy, ILL.

George W. m) Sarah J. Bosley b.Kansas and John m)Katherine Miller.
Your George W. Fechter must somehow be connected to these Factors.
Thanks for reading, Laura
