Fedora name in Novy Hrozenkov, CZ

I am looking for a connection of the Fedora name to the Orsak name/family that came for Novy Hrozenkov, CZ in 1873 to Texas. My ggf used Fedora as his middle name and his first few children was bapt Fedora in early Catholic churches in Lavaca & Fayette Co. TX.

I also am trying to determine the history of FEDORA name and its roots as well as where families were from. Anybody named Fedora contact me. samorsak at yahoo dot com
Thanks, Sam

Thank you for the link. If a person made "application" for citizenship on Sep 6, 1934, how long would they have to wait before citizenship was granted. I assume the link you offered would be searched for the date citizenship was granted.

I'll have to do a little checking, but "Mihai" would likely stand for Mihaly ... and also likely be some relative (although not a brother or sister). Sarkoz-Ujlak (Livada) was not a large village, so they are likely related.

How might I see the ship manifests? Thank you.

Did you take the applied for naturalization date (6 Sept 1934) from the ship's manifest? I do see a reference to a wife (Maria, age 30) and the words "... to follow with children ..." and one named Sandor (2 years old). All of this is in column 21.

So far a page-by-page check of the Canadian Naturalization (1932-1951) records through 1939 has not found them. But we have a few more years to go, so there is still hope.

Thanks.

Ypu might try The National Registration of 1940 http://www.statcan.gc.ca/bsolc/olc-cel/olc-cel?catno=93C0006... All civilians over the age of 16 were surveyed at that time.

While you don't know exactly where to look, the name might make the search easier. You give them as much information as you have and see what they can find. There is a fee but if they do not find a record, you don't pay.

If they can find a record, it will tell you where he was in 1940 which might give you a hint of his place of death.

Good luck.

The ship manifests are available on Ancestry.ca or Ancestry.com

Yes, the search would be for the date citizenship was granted. I checked my great-grandmother's application - she applied 6 June 1940 and her certificate was granted 27 Aug 1941.

There is a naturalization list on the Library and Archives Canada website but it’s only indexed to 1932. After that you have to search by month and year, which takes quite awhile. The website is here:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/naturalization-...

If you find Josef listed you can order his naturalization application for a very small fee. It will tell you where in Canada he was living.

Did Josef have a relative named Mihai, born about 1895? Mihai FEDORAS arrived in Canada in 1926 and he was from Livada, the same place as Josef. His destination was Winnipeg (in Manitoba) and looking again at the passenger list for Josef I can see it was also his destination. It doesn’t mean however that they stayed in Winnipeg, they may have moved somewhere else.

Thank you for the link. You are very kind to help me so much already. I now have one concrete lead.

No ... none of our living relatives have any information about Jozsef Fedoras ... when he traveled from Hungary (Sarkoz-Ujlak) to Canada ... whether he first entered America ... only that he visited his sister in Phillipsburg, NJ, when my mother was young (no year).

I would not have known about his death without the Hungarian researcher finding the date in the Birth Record in Hungary. Not much to go on ... but you have given me a good start.

Thanks, I'll contact the Random Acts folks and follow-up the link.

The passenger list showing Josef is available on Ancestry but unfortunately that page is very difficult to read. I can't make out his destination - it's possibly Saskatchewan - and it says he is planning to be farm labourer.

It also mentions that he applied for naturalization 6 Sept 1934 and he had a wife Maria age 30 and two children, who I assume were going to join him.

Thank you. The information on Jozsef's arrival in Canada gives me a good place to start.

His original identity (birth information) was taken from microfilms at LDS centers and later confirmed by a Hungarian researcher visiting the church in (then) Romania. His death date (in 1944) was shown in the Birth Register at the church, which was a common Hungarian practice (cross reference). It would seem he died somewhere in Canada, and the information got back to his village in Hungary (now part of Romania).

Is it possible to order a copy of the record you mention from the National Archive of Canada? I'll also try to follow up on whether Jozsef became a Canadian citizen.

Thank you for the help.

Your posting was some time ago. I just happened upon it.

I am one of the Fedora's, my Grandfather was Roman Fedora from Floral SK. Anne Fedora is my aunt. She married William Cuthill and lived for many years at Biggar SK - later Anne moved to BC. Roman did have a large family - nine, I believe.

They divorced and she moved to California as far as I know.

She was from Pittsburg and born around 1903. I am not sure when she moved to California, I assume around 1930+.

Are we close?

Am looking for Fedoras from SK. I am related to a Sonia who died in 1946ish. She was married to a Fedora and they had at least children: Harry or Harvey and a daughter who married William Cuthill. Mr. Fedora died and Sonia married a Gola from Prince Albert. I think the Fedora lived around Floral, SK in 1934.

Becky,
Alot of my Fedora Line comes from Pennsylvania then moved into IL and Ohio. But this is only when they came into the United States. Before the U.S. My line goes into Prussia. I spelling of Fedora is an americian version. In Prussia it is spelled Fidora. We need to compare some names and dates. I think we could be connected but I need to know if you can go any further back than your grandmother.
I have 4 generations of Fedora/Fidora lines. Dating back to 1836.
Lorraine Loretta Fedora (living) My Mother
Carl Heinrich Gustave Fedora b.1889
Johann Fidora b.1862
Johann Fidora b.1836
I have alot of sibling and marriages information on all of these so maybe through one of them we might discover a connection.
Kay
