Hi Jacob
I have a vessel built in 1904 by a Feye Jacobs Feenstra. This might be the father of Jacob Feenstra who has moved to the usa?
I'm very curious.
Sincerely Hylkje
On 8/5/10 I posted a message to Dawn under "Elias-Feenstra" query listing information on the Johnson side of the family to current date, related to me. Jane Feenstra Johnson is my great-grandmother.

Just a bit of trivia about Jane's father, Dr. John Bartles Henry Feenstra: apparently he was a smoker (pipe, I believe). I now own his office chair and when I acquired it, attached to the bottom of the chair was a piece of the sandpaper he used to strike his matches. Strike marks were visible in the wood under the sandpaper.

I've considered having the chair appraised but it doesn't really matter what value somebody else would place on that chair; to me it is priceless.

Correction to dates for Antje Vanderveer:
She was born 12/5/1837 in Holland and died 7/1/1910 in Iowa, USA. Her husband, Dr. John Henry Bartles Feenstra was born in Holland on 5/2/1843 and died in USA on 3/18/1922.

I had previously listed John's birth/death dates as Antje's.

My grandmother was Petranelle Feenstra, born in Friesland, the Netherlands in 1892; came to America as a teen with her family. First they resided w/cousins in Montana; the rest of the family decided to move back to the Netherlands, except for my grandmother who decided to marry and settle down in Michigan.

It's been hard to trace my Feenstra ancestors, and any help would be appreciated.
Feenstra

Rose, we seem fairly close to making a connection among our ancestors!

My grandmother was Petranelle ("Nellie") Feenstra, daughter of Henry Feenstra, born in Friesland. When she first came to America they stayed with cousins in Montana. This arrangement somehow didn't work out, and the family decided to move back to the Netherlands.

Nellie, however, had become involved with another Dutch immigrant in Montana, my grandpa Henry DeRoo, and she decided to stay and become his wife.

Henry turned out to be the nomadic type. From Montana they moved back to Michigan where they lived in Zeeland for a short while. From there they made a brief residence in Florida where Nellie almost died of malaria. They moved back to Michigan and settled in Kalamazoo where Nellie stayed until her death.

Do you happen to know if your Anthony had any siblings? Or any relatives who moved to Montana? I feel they might be cousins of my grandmother but there's no proof.

Thanks again for your reply to my message, please feel free to e-mail me. Thanks again!

I come from a long line of Tjebbe Feenstras being born to Jakob Feenstras from Friesland. I know this tradition has gone back a long way in my family and continues today with the oldest born son being named either Jakob or Tjebbe (Tim). The most recent clans residing just outside of Sarnia, Ontario, Canada where my grandfather Tjebbe (son of Jakob who lived to be 105) passed on in 1998 at the ripe old age of 98. My uncle Jake and cousin Tim still reside there. I know another uncle of mine has done some chronology on the family, but to the extent I do not know. I can find out more if it is needed.

Pieter Feenstra

I've found your grandmother's family, but I'm not so sure about your grandfather. Their marriagecertificate doesn't mention the names of the parents. There are several Pieter Feenstra's in the same area and timeperiod. Since your father is named Durk, it is possible that your great grand father was also called Durk. That's why I think it will most likely be this Pieter:

Pieter Feenstra, born May 22 1891 Hemelemer Oldeferd (Friesland), son of Durk Feenstra and Angenietje van Temmen. There is also a brother mentioned; Jelte Gerrit Feenstra.

About your grandmother:

Rein Baukes Couperus, b.Aug 11 1816 Wymbritseradeel (mairie Heeg), son of Bauke Reins Couperus and Akke Roukes de Boer. Married Jun 29 1844 Wymbritseradeel, with Taetske T(h)omas Brouwer.
One of their children:
- Hette Couperus (m), b.Jan 27 1853 Wymbritseradeel, d.May 15 1922 Hindeloopen. Married May 13 1882 Workum with Uilkje Roosje(n).
Their children:
- Rein Couperus (m), b.Sep 1 1885 Wymbritseradeel, d.Apr 28 1891 Hindeloopen.
- Tetje Couperus (f), b.Jan 12 1888 Wymbritseradeel, d.Apr 15 1891 Hindeloopen.
- TETSJE COUPERUS (f), b.Sep 6 1891 Hindeloopen. Married May 26 1915 Hindeloopen with PIETER VEENSTRA (in marriage certificate written with a 'V').
- Reinskje Couperus (f), b.Nov 9 1893 Hindeloopen.
- Rein Couperus (m), b.Jun 14 1897 Hindeloopen, d.Feb 13 1938 Hemelumer Oldeferd (married at that time).
- Siebe Couperus (m), b.Jul 22 1899 Hindeloopen, d.Jun 24 1902 Hindeloopen.

If you are from Holland you can search for info yourself at www.ryksargyf.org/nl/ryksargyf.asp select 'stamboom onderzoek'.
Found a marriage certificate of Klaas Feenstra and Antje Bos. Don't know if they are your ancestors, but here is the info anyhow.

Ate Jans Feenstra, son of Jan Feenstra, married May 12 1825 Ferwerderadeel (province of Friesland), with Trijntje Wytzes de Jong.
Their children:

- Ytje Ates Feenstra (f), b.Feb 18 1828 Ferwerderadeel, married Mar 26 1853 Ferwerderadeel. With Renze Tjallings Booyenga, b.Dec 6 1827 Ferwerderadeel, son of Tjalling Boijens Booyenga and Trijntje Gelts de Vries.

- Wijtze Ates Feenstra (m), b.Jul 4 1830 Ferwerderadeel, d.Jan 11 1844 Ferwerderadeel.

- Klaaske Ates Feenstra (f), b.Dec 12 1832 Ferwerderadeel. Married May 19 1860 Ferwerderadeel with Johannes Piers Prins.

- Beitske Ates Feenstra (f), b.Mar 10 1835 Ferwerderadeel. Married Apr 6 1854 Ferwerderadeel with Folkert Durks Stremler.

- Antje Ates Feenstra (f), b.Apr 8 1837 Ferwerderadeel. Married May 27 1865 Ferwerderadeel with Pieter Miedema.

- KLAAS ATES FEENSTRA(m), b.Mar 12 1840 Marrum (province of Friesland, hamlet near Ferwerderadeel). Married May 18 1865 Het Bildt (province of Friesland) with ANTJE BOS. She is born in Minnertsga (near Barradeel, Friesland), age 21, daughter of Arjen Jans Bos and Froukje Dirks Algera.
Their child (the only one I could find):

--Trijntje Klazes Feenstra (f), b.Mar 18 1866 Het Bildt.

Can't find anything else on Klaas and his family. The marriage certificate of Klaas mentions that he is born in Marrum, but the certificate is written in Ferwerderadeel. This means that it is possible that his siblings are born in Marrum also (Marrum didn't have an archive).
You wrote about Maarum in province of Groningen. Are you sure the second 'a' wasn't an 'r'? There is a place called Marum in Groningen. Couldn't find a Klaas Feenstra in Groningen, but there are only few certificates of Groningen on the net.

Rueben,
What a surprise to read Dutch on this site!
No, I'm not from the Feenstra group. Therefore I don't think you can help me in my genealogy. It's all in Holland and Germany only (as far as I know). But thanks anyway.
Don't know if you already saw the ryksargyf site? Maybe the following info can help you a bit.
Ryksargyf is a site that has info on persons which lived in the province of Friesland only. You can search for them on www.ryksargyf.org select 'onderzoek', then 'stamboom onderzoek'. Select 'kaart' and you'll see a map of Friesland. Search for BS geboorten (birth), BS huwelijken (marriages) and BS overlijden (death) and choose a 'regio'. At 'Friese plaatsen' you can find in what part of Friesland the places are. Maybe also in 'familienamen 1811'. It says that in the year 1811 everyone had to have a surname and register it. This is info concerning the official document. It's in Dutch, but since you can read that you'll probably find something. The places that are given can be of a bigger place in the naberhood of the birth or marriage because hamlets didn't have an archive.
Also try www-lias.rad.archief.nl it's still in a testing fase and not completed yet. But there is an English version and lots of info on Friesland. It contains official birth- death- and marriage certificates (brief versions). Enter the surnames without the prefix 'de' or 'van der' otherwise you cannot find anything there. The maximum info you can get there in one hit is 1500. Since Feenstra is often heard in Friesland that is a possibility. Narrow the results down for instance by choosing the province of Friesland, or a certain time period.
Good luck in your search. Jacqueline.
