I am a descendent of Adam Desch (Macungie), Philip Desch(Macungie), Henry Daniel Desh (Hellertown), and Daniel Henry Desh (Bethlehem). I have been doing research on these ancestors for about five years. The Philip who was born in 1799 and referenced in this series of messages was the son of Philip Desch who was born in 1763 in Macungie. I have the senior Philip Desch's family bible dated 1778. It lists the family members as Anna Maria (wife) and children Henry, Carolus, Susanna, Wilhelm, and Philip. There are sources that indicate that the senior Philip Desch was involved in the Fries rebellion. I would be interested in learning more about Philip's descendents and would enjoy sharing what I know about the Desch's/Desh's. Thanks
Daniel Henry Brady

Oops, sorry--I did mean Susan Feese Curtis. But now you have me backtracking. I know that Solomon Curtis had a sister named Sarah, as she is named in the estate records for Hiram Curtis. However, I also show a Sarah as a daughter for Solomon, in the same time frame for birth. I did list a Hoover as a husband of Sarah Curtis, which obviously is different than your Sarah, who is married to Joseph Willis. Let me do some more checking, to see what is correct on this.

Solomon Curtis is a brother to my ancestor, Dayton Curtis. Solomon was one of 14 children born to Hiram and Jane (Sheets) Curtis. Solomon died in 1851, and she married Isaac Davis in 1854, having 3 more children. As far as I know, Sarah was the only child of Solomon and Susan Fees Curtis. You mention her having a 2nd husband. Do you know his name? Can you fill me in on the details of Sarah and her lines? I would be glad to share all of my Curtis info.
I am fairly confident that the the Curtis line did not have any Cherokee blood. This line followed the Masts/Hoover/Byrkett lines from North Carolina to Miami Co. Ohio. I have not had any luck tracing Jane Sheets line, although the Sheets family also were connected extensively with the lines mentioned above.
As for the Fees line, a Fees researcher told me that Peter and Sarah Fies/Fees had 5 children: Jacob b 1821, Susan b1832, David b 1826, Anna b 1834, Samuel b 1839, Anna Fees, the sister of your Susan, was married to William Curtis--the brother of Solomon. He also believed that Peter was a son of Jacob David Fies and Anna Maria Greim of Berks co, PA.

The birthdate for Anna is based on her obituary, which I am including. Due to the fact that her sister, Susan, was born March 1832, I believe this date to be correct. I suspect I made a typo in the original message. Here is the obit:
Miami Union
19 July 1900

Anna Feece Curtis

Anna Feese was born in Union Township, Miami County Ohio, Jan 7 1834 and died at her home near Troy July 13 1900, aged 66 years. On June 24 1849 she was united in marriage with William Curtis of Union Township. Their lifes were happy and for more that 51 years, they walked the pathway of life together, fought its battles, endured its hardships and enjoyed its pleasures. For about 44 years they lived at the place where she died, their present home. Thirteen children were born into their home and most of them grew to manhood and womanhood. Ten of them morn the loss of a mother, two sons and a daughter having preceded the mother to the eternal world. About 30 years ago she united with the Union Christian Church south of Troy. She and her husband were faithful members of it and workers in it. The immediate relatives surviving are a husband, a brother, a sister, Mrs Susan Davis of Covington, 4 sons and six daughters. She was a faithful wife, a devoted mother and a good neighbor. The funeral services were held at The Troy Christian Church, Sunday at 2:00 pm. There was a large congregation present. Rev. W.H. Denison officiated and the remains were laid at rest in Riverside Cemetery.
--Think I have what I need on the Fees line, but may be getting in touch..

Hi Karin
First, I think you meant "seven children of Isaac and SUSAN Curtis Davis". Are you saying that the Sarah Curtis listed as 9 yrs old is actually a sister of Solomon instead of the daughter of Solomon and Susan? Not disputing, just had never heard that before. Did Susan have any children by Solomon? Thanks for that information.

You mention seven children of Isaac and Sarah Curtis Davis in the 1860 census. One of the children, Sarah, is actually the orphaned daughter of Hiram and Jane Curtis. Sarah Curtis was the youngest sister of her first husband, Solomon Curtis. There are also an orphaned niece and 2 orphaned nephews living with the family in that census.

They had a daughter Grace Margaret in 1880, which I am a decendent. I am trying to see if there are any other siblings of Grace.

Karin,

In an earlier email you listed Anna's birth date as 7 Jan 1832, and in this latest you show 1834. Have you received additional information? The 1832 is the same as the estimated birth year for Susan.

Do you have all the fees information you need. The links to the Byrkett family that you mention is further evidence that Peter is the son of Jacob.

Bill Wright

Thanks for the detailed information. I have found numerous errors in the 1880 census transcription, mostly generated by difficulty reading the handwriting. You have given me a lot of homework to do.

I doubt the accuracy of the Fies/Fees listings back to the old country. We have a reasonably good fix on Jacob, Peter's father. Beyond that things get extremely speculative. If you want more Fees/Fies information, I am willing to exchange data.

Bill

She would have been very young at the time of his death. She lived with his parents for a while (Otto and Lydia Fees) in Hanover Township, Illinois. She then moved to California with her mother and was living there at the time of her dad's death.
Either her name or her mother's name was Linda.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Bill, I am happy to give you any info. I can. I would love any help I can get. Susannah married James Mansfield. They had 5 children that I know of. I got this info. from the 1850 census. My great-grandmother was their youngest daughter at that time. Sarah E. Mansfield. She married George Kindred. I can get the other names from the census. The copies I made are a little hard to read the names, so if you don't have access to that census, I will be happy to look that up. Sarah and George had about eight children. My grandmother was their daughter Avis Beulah KIndred. Tell me how much info you want and I can give you more complete names and dates for those generations. Hope this helps. Always nice to find a shoe-string cousin. Nancy

Karin..
I did not think to tell you, but one of my mothers sisters married a Lange. Her name was Minnie Alice. I have done no research on the family, but he was of German desent (I think), His name was LeRoy John Lange and had an unmarried brother that lived with them by the name of Rudolph (Rudy). I think their fathers name was also Rudolph. If I remember him correctly as a child, he spoke very little English.
Uncle LeRoy died a few years ago, and Rudy died only last year.
Just thought I would pass that along.

Hi Karin.
Thanks for the information. I had not heard what had happened to Solomom Curtis, but I had assumed that he had died, since I found Susan married to Issac Davis, and Sarah living with them as a child.
My mother and her mother were quite disfunctional as a family, and my mother being raised by an Uncle did not know much about her family. My grandmother was quite "loose" to say the least, and after grandpa Ben died, she had affair after affair and child after child. My mother had two brothers and five "full" sisters and only two or three of them were raised together. Both brothers were killed in WWII. The five sisters in later years of their lives have more or less come back together and still see each other about once a year.
Grandma even had a child by her brother-in-law. My what a mess, but anyway, it has been real hard finding family. It has only been in the last few months that I have been able to get past Joseph and Sarah Willis.
One thing that had thrown me off was that the family Bible had Sarah's last name spelled wrong.
You have probably read my thread to Bill Wright that has my line down through grandpa Ben, so I will not repeat in here.
Census in 1910 has Sarah living in Taloga, Morton County, Kansas. Her husband George Lindley is not with her. Only Grandpa Ben Willis and two Lindley children. (Roll 450, Book 1, page 14, Morton County Kansas)
Census in 1920 has Sarah Lindley as head of houshold with only George Jr with her. Living next door is Art Lindley and his family. (Roll 539,Book 1, page 271, Morton County Kansas. Also on the same census has Ben Willis with wife Oma Butts and six children, including my mother Jennie Hazel. (Roll 539Book 1, page 282).
Census in 1930 Grandpa Ben is dead (died 1924) and his mother Sarah is dead (died 1June 1925). My mother is living with an Uncle Clarence Butts family and some of her brothers and sisters.(Roll 713 Book 1 page 47, Westola, Morton County, Kansas.
Bill, Mark, and others on this thread.
I believe that I have just found my link to your Feis/Fees families.
My Grandfather was Benjamin Franklin Willis, born in Ohio in 1872 to Joseph Willis and Sarah Curtis. Sarah and Joseph were married in Shelby County Ohio in 1871. Sarah was born 1853 to Solomom Curtis and Susan Fies/Fees in Miami County, Ohio. Susan and Solomon were married in 1849 in Miami County, Ohio. Susan was daughter of Peter Fies/Fees and Sarah ?. I have seen some documents listing her as Sarah Babb. Will be researching that soon. She was listed as being born in Ashe County, NC
Being born in Ashe County, NC, do you feel that she could be Native American. Ashe county was in or near the Cherokee Nation during the time of her birth. (about 1775).
I have always been told that there was Cherokee blood in our family, and always thought to be through GGma Sarah Curtis.
At one time, Sarah Curtis and her second husband lived on the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma ( 1900 U.S. Census) along with my grandfather, Benjamin.
