Thanks for you help Ed. A trip to the cemetery may not be necessary. I have ordered the death certificate for baby girl. However I don't think that Annie died as an infant. I have cousins who remember Annie and if she died as an infant i don't think they would. I also don't think her name was Annie May..I think that May was a nickname for Mary. I could be wrong..still trying to verify either way.

Nicole

Hi Nicole,

I' ve been through quite a few computers, so the source that gave me Annie May's name is long gone.
I did have her name on the family tree long before I found the death certificate for Baby Girl Gannon, So it very well could be they are one in the same. A trip to Calvary Cemetery might help answer the question.

Ed

I think it is very possible that Mary went by May. No0t sure where the Annie came from.

I can tell you that the Thomas and Honoria that you found in the 1901 Irish census while promising is unlikely to be my Michael's parents. Everything can find about my Michael Gannon suggests that my Michael emigrated to the us in the mid to late 1890s. I know that he was in Ohio in 1902 when his oldest son Thomas was born.

I beleive my Michael was born in Tuam about 1874.

thanks for all your help..I really appreciate it.

Nicole

Sorry, I forgot to add that the Thomas and Honoria that I found had a son named Michael unmarried and still living with them.

I'll hunt around and see if I can find anything on Annie May, But it does appear that she died before her father and mother. I wonder if Mary could have gone by the name May.

Hi Nicole,

Sorry, I don't have any information on his siblings. I did check out the 1901 Irish census and found a possible match to Michael's father:

1901 Irish Census;

Townland: Ballinagran
Parish: Balla
Barony: Clanmorris
County: Mayo
Head of Household Surname: Gannon
Head of Household Given name: Thomas, 56
Head of Household Occupation: Farmer
Other Occupants: Honoria, 53
Michael, 26, Farm Laborer, not married

You can take a look yourself, it's here:

http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/census.shtml

Michael Gannon and Mary Chambers children:

Annie May Gannon b. ?
Thomas Joseph Gannon b. @1902
Mary R. Gannon b. @1903
Lillian E. Gannon b. May, 6, 1905
Loretta Gannon, b. Feb 28, 1910, d. July 19, 1910
Baby Girl Gannon, b. jan 16, 1911, d. Jan 17, 1911
Eleanor Gannon b. @1913
Edward James Gannon, b. Feb 4, 1915

I can't find anything on Annie Gannon, so she may be "Baby Girl Gannon"

If you go to the earliest record, the one where Michael gave his father's name, then his father was Thomas. He also named his first born son, Thomas.

On his death certificate his father's name, Patrick, was given by the informant, and not by Michael. So I'm pretty sure his fathers name was Thomas.

Gannon he married Mary Chambers, they had 8 children, 5 surviving to adulthood. Michael Feighan (married to Mary Brice) passed away in 1910, and Mary Chambers Gannon died in 1923. Michael Gannon and Mary Brice Feighan then married.

I have Michael Gannon's parents listed as Thomas Gannon and
Hanora Duffy.

Ed

If you are still in KILMEANA please look up Rita Feehan in Brokagh. Her daughter Maura might be there. She lives in Oregon and has two daughters who live in America with her. They are the best. Peter Feehab is the cousin and Uncle Hugh is not to be missed. I think his wife is English. They were the best hosts when we were there in 2004, so very long ago. Longing to return to see them all. They spell their name the English phonetical version FEEHAN and of course we having come over before the 1900 census kept the Gaelic spelling Feighan.Tell us all about your visit.
Best, Fleur
I am the grandaughter of Margaret (Feighan) Fitzpatrick and the great-grandaughter of James Feighan. I, too, am part of the Cleveland and Lakewood, Ohio Feighan's and would love to see your photos of the Kilmeena memorials. I knew Michael A. Feighan well and as a kid we visited his office in Washington D.C. He also sent me his invitation to John F. Kennedy's innaugaration (I was just a kid), but it is framed and still hangs in my home.
Hello Nancy,

Here in Cleveland, Ohio the Feighan's pronounce their name "Fee-in."

The Feighan's of Cleveland came from Drumhuskert, Co. Mayo, Ireland in the mid 1800s. A branch of the family still resides in Drumhuskert and use the spelling "Feehan."

Are you related to the Edward Feighan who died in Philadelphia in 1956, He had four daughters, Kathlyn, Bridget, Maureen and Patricia?

Ed O'Malley

Hi There Fleur!
I hope you are well.
I am Patrick McNally Junior's daughter - and Annette is my long-lost (and recently found) only surviving aunt.
I spoke to my cousin Peter (who has mentioned you) last year and since New Year have been in contact with auntie Annette (93 in November). I have spoken with her on the phone several times and had a letter from her around 3 weeks ago. She mentioned you and remarked upon the lovely stay she once had in America.
We were at Patrick and Kathleen's(Catherine's) and Michael Joseph's grave (in Barking, Essex) just yesterday.
It is amazing to hear from you at this time - because we are off on our annual pilgrimage to Ireland tomorrow (5th September) for a week.
We always stay in Sligo but(since I found out where it all began) always end up in Kilmeena, Mayo to visit the site of the McNally place in Knockboy and the Feehan/Feighan place in Drumhuskert. Our relative Peter Feehan still lives there -and when I was there last Autumn, Carmel at the Buckfield Inn rang his house to 'test the water'. He was out - and his wife did not a know of any English relatives - so that was that.
I spoke to his brother Padraig (also on the phone) who was just off to a funeral - and I left some of my research for him at the pub - but have not heard back from him!
I live in Colchester, Essex in the United Kingdom - and it is great to hear from a fellow family history enthusiast!
I've always had a fascination for law and politics - so it was pleasing to learn that the American Feighans had become involved in those particular spheres.
My son recently became a father for the first time and I was really thrilled that they named the baby girl Kathleen Mary ( I'm Mary Kathleen!)
As I said - I'm away for a week, but would love to communicate with you when I get back home. My regular email is mkmills@ntlworld.com

God Bless you and yours,
Mary

I am the grand daughter of Catherine Feighan b. 1878 and the great-grand daughter of Winifred Gannon Feighan and Michael Feighan (written as Feehan in the 1901 and 1911 census and this seems to have continued). They were the Drumhuskert ( aka Drimhuskert) Feehans/Feighans (exactly the same name - different spelling preference.
Catherine married Patrick McNally B. 1878 who came from the neighbouring townland of Knockboy in 1907. He worked as an RIC constable from 1900 - 1922 ending his service in Sligo - then moving to England.
I understand that I am connected to Fleur Jones Feighan, daughter of the late Congressman and lawyer Michael Aloysius Feighan (1905-1992) and would love to hear from her and any other Feighan/Feehans who might be connected.
I have just returned from a visit to Kilmeena ( where both townlands lie - and have taken digital pictures of some Feehan memorials at both the old and new graveyards.

To Pakey4: I thought you might like to know that you are also connected to a person named Joe Giblin in the state of Illinois, who happens to be my husband! His great-grandmother, Mary Feighan or Feehan, wife of Michael Giblin, was the sister of Joseph and James Feighan who came to Cleveland, Ohio, and your ancestor, Michael Feehan, who remained in Drumhuskert. Even though they were separated by the Atlantic Ocean, somehow the knowledge of the brother who remained behind in Ireland, has survived through the generations, probably because several of his children also moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Michael Feehan, Winifred Gannon and several of their children are included in my Family Tree Maker program.

My husband and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, and met Peter Feehan and his cousin, Michael Walsh in Drumhuskert. We spent an evening at one of the pubs in Westport, and they did mention your McNally grandparents. If you have a scanner, we would love to see the photos that you took at the graveyards.

Please feel free to contact me at jkgiblin@sbcglobal.net I can e-mail you a two-generation Feighan/Feehan genealogical report, which includes the children of the second generation.

Relatives who emigrated to the US in the 19th Century

I live in Ireland and I am researching my family history. My great grandfather was John Feighan who lived in Bullaun, a village in the parish of Islandeady that lies between Westport and Castlebar in the County of Mayo, Ireland. He died in 1865 or 1866.Three of his daughters emigrated to the US - Mary, Jane and Ellen (born 1866). Mary returned and is buried in the family grave. The other two daughters remained in the US. I would like to hear from anyone who is descended from either Jane or Ellen. I can in return give some information on the Irish part of the family tree.

I can in return give some information on the Irish part of the family tree.
e-mail address: fiachain@gofree.indigo.ie
