Unfortunately, I don't show a spouse or children for him yet.
I am not sure of his place of birth but suspect it was in Huntington, IN. I show a sister who apparently died in Marion, Grant Co., IN, so the family may be the one you are looking for.

Hi Nancy,
I descend from one of the Feighner's of Union Twp., Huntington Co., IN. I believe the Solomon and John you are referring to are my 4th great-granduncles. The Feigh(t)ner family original comes from Pennsylvania. But they stopped in Richland Co., Ohio for awhile. I just found my Feighner ancestors, so I don't have a lot on info outside my direct line. Solomon and John's parents were Daniel & Catherine Reicwick-Feighner. The reason I mention their parents name's is because after Catherine died in 1850, Daniel married Mary Vance. Daniel had 9 children with Catherine and 6 with Mary, and as far as I know most of Daniel's children stayed in Ohio or went to Indiana.

Re: Meaning of FEIGHNER

Leslie:

First of all we can derive little meaning from the current spelling of the name. Feige has two meanings: as a noun it's a fig, and as an adjective it means cowardice. Feighner is indeed a German name derived probably from Feichtner. Feichtner is a name that is common in today's Munich or Berlin in Germany. When the Feighners immigrated to America in the mid 1700s I could only guess that the name was misspelled in the records, as "gh" has no occurrences in German. An alternate spelling is Feuchtner where "feuchte" means damp or moist which I would not tie into anyone's name. What "Feichtner" means I haven't a clue.

The German word for bird is "Vogel" and not FEIG. My main hobby is birding. Therefore the first part of my email address is "feinerVogel" meaning "fine bird" which comes close to our name.

Mike Feighner, Livermore, CA
Hi Matthew. For the life of me, I can't find my notes telling me why I believe that Sarah Ann Vance who married Elihu Dewitt was originally Sarah Ann Feighner. I have a note to myself that John and Solomon Feighner are found on p. 302 of Union Twp, Huntington Co, IN 1860 census and Sarah with a ?. Sarah's birthplace was listed as Ohio on the 1880 and 1900 census.

If Sarah Ann Vance was a Feighner, it does sound like she could be a twig on your genealogical tree. Let me know if you come up with anything else which would link my Sarah to your family and I'll try to locate my notes. Nancy

I'm not sure if we have the same Sarah Feighner Vance. According to the 1900 census, she was born OCT 1843 in Ohio and had been married to Elihu Dewitt for 42 years which dates the marriage to ca 1857-1858. She must have then died sometime after the same census. Sarah gave birth to 14 children (7 of whom were still living). According to the census, her parents were born in PA. There is also a connection to the surname of Sidon. Annie E. Sidon, b. AUG 1885 in IN was listed with Elihu and Sarah on the 1900 census. Let me know if you think there is any new supporting evidence to share. Nancy

I know that George Feighner and Barbara Poorman Feighner were her parents. I have a picture of Daniel and Catherine Feighner Miller with their children. I would love any information on this family, since I don't have much. Thanks Soni

Hi Soni, Thanks for answering my message. My husband is the descendant of Mary Jane Feighner-her parents Louisa Fitzcharles and Jeremiah Feighner. He did get a large box of Feighner family pictures from his parents. Just looked through them yesterday and found a picture of Wm. and Catherine (Feighner) Miller. Wm. has been labeled by someone in this line--they may have mislabeled--could this couple be your family? The supposedly Wm. has a very long white beard. He also is said to be a minister. Let me know if you think it could be yours and will try to e-mail it to you. My husband's Feighners came to Ohio from PA and where before that don't know. Did get a response from someone else that has helped us a lot. Does anyone know where they came from before PA? Let me know about the Miller picture. Jae

Kitty,
Looks like we may have the same Josephus Feighner
I just had a partial birthdate from the 1900
census of Grant Co, IN which gives Jul 1852.
Josephus md Sarah Louisa Zimmerman 6 Jul 1884
in Grant Co. They had eight children, Maud M.
b Apr 1885 and I believe she is the Maud H
who md N. Wilbur Davis in Grant Co 26 Nov 1903
2. Myrtle b Nov 1886 and is probably person
who md Carey Boler 4 Apr 1903 in Grant Co.
3.Mark b. 4 Aug 1888; d Jan 1964 in Michigan
probably Berrien Co but don't have proof of that
yet. He md Elizabeth Cathrine Crow 24 Feb 1917
in St Joseph Co, IN. She d Jan 1986 in Niles,
Berrien, MI
4. Bertha b May 1891; md Lyle E. Young 5 May
1914 in Niles, Berrien, MI
5. Floy b. Nov 1893; md Ralph R. Gillette
28 Nov 1910 in Niles
6. Sydney C. b Oct 1895. Have nothing further
on her. She is not with her mother in 1910.
7.Edwin Lawrence b. 30 Nov 1897; d. 6 Apr 1948
in Los Angeles. Have nothing further on him but
have sent for a death cert.
8. George b abt 1902.
In 1910 Louisa is living in Niles, Michigan,
with four of her children. Josephus is not
with her. She says she is married and has had 8
children, all living. States she has been
md 25 yrs. So where is Josephus? Mark is
not with her at this time. When he marries
in 1917 he says his father is living in Ft
Wayne. Were they separated? divorced? Or is
this a misstatement by Mark. Also on this
marr lic application Mark states his father
was born in Ft Wayne.
Would like to know more about what become of
this family. Louisa is the only one in the
Grant Co Death Index that I checked. I want
to try to get a death cert and possibly an
obit.
Any additions you can make to this will be
appreciated.
Betty

I believe she was related to John and/or Solomon Feighner who are listed in the 1860 census from Union Twp. in Huntington Co. I am very interested in hearing from anyone about a possible match.
