Hi, Bruce.
Cheever was my g-g-g-grandfather. His father, Nathan Felch, would be my 4g-grandfather.
I've been doing extensive research into both Nathan and Cheever lately, as a part of my attempt to prove my descendancy from Nathan in my application for membership into NASAR (Nat'l Assn of Sons of the American Revolution). The fact-checkers in that outfit will not accept the writings of W. Farrand Felch as proof, ostensibly because he did not cite his sources (and actually admitted in his book that some of his facts were in conflict between two or more older persons' memories).
My g-g-grandmother was Elizabeth Griswold Felch; she was one of six daughters of Cheever and Mary "Polly" Felch.
I have a lot of rich family history that I'd be willing to share, if you're interested.
By the way, Elizabeth Felch was baptized in an Episcopalian Church in Dedham, Massachusetts, in 1819.

Don, I'm curious about whether you're related to Cheever Felch (?). Anyway, I've put together a brief summary and I hope it helps. By the way, Cheever died in NYC. Here goes:

Cheever Felch’s father, Nathan, married twice; first to Mary Cheever, by whom he had eight children, and later to Sally Wilkins of Reading, Vt., by whom he had four children. Nathan was a pensioned veteran of the RW and in addition to his trade of joiner and carpenter he was a farmer and minister. He was a devout student of the Bible and raised his children conscientiously. He thereby had children and grandchildren who became notable ministers and preachers. More could be said of him, but I only mention this because of its relevance to one of his sons, Cheever about whom you’ve inquired.
Cheever Felch was the 5th child born to Nathan & Mary Cheever Felch. He married Mary Hale, daughter of Deacon Asa and Dorcas Hale. Cheever and Mary had six daughters. Cheever is described as having a bright intellect and good learning for his day and that in early life he was a Methodist preacher subsequently joining the Episcopalians, and was Chaplain in the U.S. Navy. Afterwards, he edited Coram’s Champion in New York city where he died.
Most of the information was personal memories by family members and people who knew him and his parents, and was obtained from the book by W. Farrand Felch.
I am a grandson of a Felch and would be about a 4th cousin (3Xremoved) to Cheever.
Bruce Biddlecome

Looking for information about where this fellow is buried. He is reliably reported to have died "in New York", but that's a big place. He was born in Cavendish, Vermont. He trained as a printer, became an ordained minister, preached in New Hampshire, and was one of the first Chaplains in the US Navy. He saw active shipboard service during the War of 1812. He died relatively young, leaving a widow and six daughters. Would love to get more information on him.

It took me this long for me to answer your question. You are correct that Farrand Felch stated JOEL ROWE married Eliza in 1819. I had not previously researched Caleb Felch's line at all and was reading an apparant mistranscription by another person who was "quoting" Farrand Felch. When I looked it up in Farrand's book myself I saw the difference. I think I know why the person changed the name, but that doesn't amtter. I'd love to exchange further information with you. I'm at:
biddlecomehistory at yahoo dot com
B. Biddlecome (grandson of a Felch)

Hi
On page 94 of W. Farrand Felch's book at #265 it says Eliza married 'JOEL' Rowe in 1819. Where did you see that she was married to 'JOHN'? I can't find anything on John or Joel married to Eliza Felch. It is quite possible she had 2 husbands??

The name JOEL is NOT the same as John. There either has been a mis=transcribing by somebody, or Eliza possibly became a widow and married a brother of her deceased husband. Need to check it out further.

From my research and records. I will be including a section on the whole "Felch family" in one of our upcoming editions of "Families of Cavendish and the Black river Valley Region in Vermont):

Nathan Felch Jr. (7) {Nathan Felch (6), Samuel(5), Samuel(4), John(3), Henry(2), Henry(1)}, was born in Royalston, Massachusetts, 17 Sept., 1780.. He m. in Cornwall, Conn., 14 May, 1805, Rebecca Shepard (b. Cornwall, Conn., 18 Dec., 1786, dau. of Allen & Anna (Hull) Shepard of Cornwall, Conn.)
Rebecca's father was a religious leader in the town of Cornwall. He had been holding church meetings in his home at the Center as early as 1798 for there was no church edifice at the time. Nathan Felch was ordained in 1803 as a deacon of the Methodist Church. However, in 1809 he entered the Episcopal Church organization where he was ordained in 1810. In 1811 Rev. Nathan was preaching at Bedford and Northcastle, New York for uhe Episcopal Church. While he served those parishes, he baptized six adults, eight to fourteen infants. He presided over three marriages and four funerals. He welcomed fifteen new converts into the church. About the year 1813, Nathan moved to Dover (Dutchess County), NY,
Rev. Felch d. in Dover, NY, he d. 10 Sept., 1835. (age 55).
Rebecca d. in Madison, NJ, 4 Sept., 1860.
In a letter written by Nathan's cousin William, "Cousin Nathan made me a short visit in 1823 when we lived in New York City. He was then living up the North River, near Haverstraw, where he was preaching. Years afterward, I discovered the name of his son, Rev. I. N. Felch in the Christian Advocate, as preacher on circuits, and as Presiding Elder.

Children:

1. Isaac Newton, b. Norwalk, Conn., 17 June, 1806. He m. 11 March, 1834, Margaret Holmes Dow (b. Belleville, NJ, 1808, dau. of Rev. John & Anne (Bruen) Dow). Isaac was "awakened" at a camp meeting in Middlebury Connecticut when he was 19 years old. He was baptized at Barkhamstead, Conn., 13 Sept., 1826 and was licensesed as an exhorter in 1829. He was a local preacher on the Belleville circuit, 11 Sept., 1830, Rev. Charles Pitman being the presiding elder. On 21 April, 1833, he as ordained deacon by Bishop Emory in Newark and was appointed to Woodbridge. Margaret was raised in the garden of Methodism at her father's house in northern New Jersey. She was "awakened under a sermon preached by Rev. Bartholomew Weed and soon after led to Christ under the ministry of Rev Anthony Atwood, a circuit preacher." She was only 17 years old. a t the time. When her mother died, she took care of her father and took over the job of her mother with all the love and grace of a goodly daughter. She met her husband at one of the theological conferences at the Dow Seminary. He was then a theological student. They traveled as ministers of faith together for more than forty years in an itinerant fashion often times no parsonages or furniture to call their own. Many times she found herself lonely as her husband's duty as presiding "elder” kept him from home most of the time. His circuit extended from the Hudson River to the Delaware River, and traveled on horseback. He preached in Bloomfield, Elizabethtown, Rahway, Northfield Staten Island; Westfield Staten Island; and from 1845-1848 the Paterson district. When the 1850 census was taken they lived in Newark. In 1858 at Nyack NY, his health began to fail. He was always happy to come back to "Sister Felch" his dutiful and cheerful Margaret. It is said that Margaret was self-poised, easy, graceful as a wife and a sainted mother. In her home there was always a ray of sunshine, world of hope and comfort for the careworn and half-discouraged husband. When Rev. Felch came home the last time, exhausted and ill, they decided to take a rest and make their home in Paterson and attended the Market Street Church. When the 1860 census was taken, they at last owned a small home valued at $300. They had additional personal property of $2,000. In 1870, they were still residents in Paterson. Their real estate holdings increased to $11,000, and they had $900 in personal property. Living with them were two of the grandchildren, Margaret (age 10), and Cornelius T. (age 7), Vandervoort, both owning $20,000 each in real estate. Rev. Felch d. in Hackettstown, 23 March, 1876 (age 69 yrs, 8 mos.) "separated by death, by death they were again reunited." He had an active ministry for 27 years. He was a member of the Philadelphia Conference six years of the New Jersey Conference 22 yrs, and of the Newark Conference, 19 years. His widow said of their marriage: "Having been married 42 years, I would state that in every respect he was a devoted husband, a tender father. Always kind and cheerful under every circumstance of life, never omitting any Christian duty, his home-life was pure and holy." Margaret removed with her daughter to New Durham (Bergen Co) NJ, then to Bristol, Connecticut. In October 1894 she came back to Newark where she died peacefully at the residence of her daughter 29 April, 1896 (age 87). They were both buried in Cedar Lawn cemetery. After her death, the following testimony was found among her personal papers: "I was converted and it was the happiest day of my life. Burt His precious promises comfort me; in all my trails I find home the same unchanging friend."
Children:
1. Anna Rebecca, b. NJ, 1835. She -- m. Cornelius T. Vandervoort, a merchant of Paterson, NJ. They both died young and left two children born in NJ, who were raised by their Aunt Parthenia McKeon. (1) Margaret Vandervoort (b. 1860) (2) Cornelius F. In 1860 they were living in Paterson, NJ with his folks. John was age 23, a clerk in the bank. In 1870, John was 33 years old and a dry goods merchant in Newark with $5,000 in personal property. His wife Elizabeth was age 31. They were living in Ocean Grove, NJ when his mother died. In 1880, John was a dry goods merchant in Towanda (Bradford Co.) Pa. whre he lived with wife and children. In June, 1900, they had moved back to New Jersey and were living in Neptune (Monmouth County). Living with them was Elizabeth's unmarried sister, Margaret S. Peacock (b. NJ, July 1836, age 63). When the 1910 census was taken, John was a widower, age 73, and lived at 97 Emboy Avenue in Neptune. (Children: (1) Lillian Felch; (2) Walter Felch; (3) Theodore Kinne Felch, b.
Hi there - I was wondering if we are researching the same family. I am related to a Charles H. Felch 1843-1925 a civil war vet who lived much of his life in cadott, wisconsin where he died. He had at least another brother named Chester E. W. Felch who was also a civil war vet and lived and died in Menasha, wisconsin in abt.1843-1925. There was also these brothers that I know of from Chester's Obituary - John, George and Albert. My Charles H. Felch's Obit says there was a sister as well a Mrs. Dunn Who I believe's name is Alice(Felch)Dunn. I have there father listed as an Alphonzo but it is not confirmed. My Charles Felch was Born in New York. I have pictures of this family I am trying to identify from living descendants. Hope to hear from you soon.

Jason M.
The Henry Felch you refer to I have identified as "Sgt. Henry Felch, Jr.", a son of Henry (abt 1590-1670) and Margaret (abt 1602-1655) Felch.
Henry Jr. also had 3 sisters. Henry was b. Wales, bapt. Norhamptonshire, England.
I don't show any Henry Felch with a mother named Elizabeth. Where does that come from?
I do show Henry (Sr.) with a 2nd wife named Elizabeth, but not sure of any children by her.
Here is information on Henry (Sr.) along with my references:

================================================================================
Individual Report for Henry Felch Sr.
================================================================================
Name: Henry Felch Sr.
Sex: M
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Individual Information
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Birth: Abt 1590 - Wales
Christening:
Death: prob Aug 1670 - Boston, Suffolk, MA(1)
Burial:
Cause of Death:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spouses and Children
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. *Margaret (Abt 1602 - 23 Jun 1655)
Marriage: Abt 1608 - Wales
Children:
1. He had four children.
He is supposed to have come with the party of Rev. Richard Blynman in 1640.
He was one of the earliest settlers and proprietors of Gloucester, MA. In
1642 he owned 6 acres of hoed ground; no grant can be found, so he must have
settled on it before the incorporation of the town. He sold a house and land
there to John Avery. He was in Watertown, MA in 1642, perhaps in Reading in
1644, and then in Boston, MA about 1657. His will was proved 27 September
1670. "It is said" he descended from Prince David of North Wales. The
surname is probably Flemish and came to England during the reign of Queen
Elizabeth when some 30,000 Flemish weavers left the Netherlands in search of
religious freedom. Ironically, he was a Quaker in a province where that was
a crime.(2)

Research:
The Maternial Felch Lines.
I would be interested in viewing what you have on this Felch family. I am working on the history of Marshall P. Felch who was associated with Yale Univerisity and Prof O.C. Marsh and the discovery of Dinosaurs in CO in the late 1800's. Would you e-mail me at bunti8@msn.com and we can compare notes of this Felch Family. I am not sure of his line back and but think he was Seabrook Felch.
Thanks June Hines
Dinosaur Depot Museum

You are correct about the parentage of Emma Felch. I have:
1. David Campbell Felch m. Mary Sophronia J. Killingsworth (dau of John Killinsworth & Ann Eliza Shields)
2. Benjamin (1790-1864) m. 1812 Jerusha Sarah Steele Jackson (1790-1863)
3. Benjamin (1754-1833) m. 1779 Sarah Campbell (1760-1853)
4. Daniel, Jr. (b. 1718) m. 1748 Jane Page (1729-1787)
5. Daniel (1667-1752) m. 1717 Sarah Fuller (1688-aft 1824)
6. Henry, Jr. (1610-1699) m. 1649 Hannah Sargent (1635-1717)
7. Henry I (abt 1590-1670) m. Margaret (d. 1655)

You pose an interesting question and the answer may prove to be even more interesting to Wisconsin family historians; I've noticed that my Felch ancestors in Wisconsin employed youngsters (age 12-17) in their households, while their own sons of the same age were elsewhere (perhaps away at school or working on another farm?).

I have no biographical info on your Alphonzo, as I'm very remotely related (5th cousin 3Xremoved); however, he can be traced back several generations to Sgt. Henry Felch, Jr. (1610-1699) from whom I'm also descended. Frank's brother, George, also had a son named Frank Felch.
