Never occurred to us til today to do this search...came out of a conversation after church.
Our FELLER grandpa came from Holland. We thought we were Dutch but the name was obviously from somewhere else earlier. We had no answers til Dec. 2008 when my husband, Ed, was working at the U.S. embassy in Bern, Switzerland. He was remodeling the bldg. they were moving into. From 3 different encounters we learned that the family originated right there, in Bern. There's a neighborhood in Bern left to the city complete with lovely chateau style home by the late Mrs. Feller, now a medical center, preschool and apartments. Solved a mystery for us and we were delighted.

Hi Joe .... I think you are on track not being able to make the connection. Your grandma(my grandma Feller was also a Magdalena) was one who wished she was related since Bob was such a famous Iowa son. .... I have a pretty complete tree of all my(including Bob) Feller relatives in the USA. Bob's grandpa Andy had 2 brothers who had children. The younger one was John, who stayed and farmed around Redfield, outside DesMoines. His son and grandson(Marvelle) had a visit from Bonnie & Clyde after they got ambushed by posse at Dexfield Park. Marvelle showed Clyde how to drive their plymouth. At about 95 now, Marvelle is still telling the story.
Andy's older brother was Nicholas, who moved to S Dakota in 1883. That was my grandfather. Nights were cold back then and Nick ended up with lots of descendants. Miner County, SD is still home to a lot of us.
So sad to say, i don't think you are related to Bob. That is not so bad. Bob doesn't even claim a lot of his real relatives, unless they talk baseball or hunting pheasants around Howard, Miner Co, SD.
I am always looking for real Feller relatives from northern France. That is where our ancestors came from in 1856.

Hi,
My Feller relatives came to the USA in 1881 from Holstein, Germany. They settled on a farm in western Iowa just west of Beebeetown. My ggrandparents were Hans Heinrich Feller @ Katharina Maria ( Schroeder ) Feller.
My grandmother Magdalena always said that Bob Feller was her cousin, but when I was young I didn't pay much attention to her and now I wish I would have. I have never been able to make the connection between the two.

Joe

I have recently sent a yDNA sample in to FamilyTreeDNA to see who I may be genetically related to. As part of the Feller/Foeller/Foller/Weller/Veller/Viller,etc group, I got about a $100 discount on the 67 marker test. That isn't necessary for everyone to take. A 37 marker test should show relationship over 400 yrs back. I am not the expert in this testing, but from what I've understood, I highly suspect that I am related to many "Feller"s from central Europe that research has not yet shown. I would encourage any Feller/Foller men to join us in the yDNA testing. I have no doubts it will aid us in making connections.

My dad's cousin was Charles Feller.

I don't have the information on the port either but we do have records that they stayed in PA for a while and then headed west. Some even started south through the western part of Virginia. My gggrandfather was born in PA, my ggrandfather was born in Ohio, my grandfather was born in Kansas. Then they started back east and my father was born in Ohio and I was born in Virginia!

Nancy Feller Caroon

I have heard that most fellers in ohio came through a pennsylvania port and then moved west. I have not records of that. It is as if they came directly to ohio. I know they must have brought family with them. Thanks for your thoughts.

Grace Feller Beltz

Andreas Foeller was born about 1749 and died in 1815. My grandfather who was doing the research said that our branch came from 4 brothers - John, Peter, Andrew and Charles. He was not able to determine the parentage of Andrew. It seems that many early records of the Ziegel Church, Heidelburg Township, PA were burned when the church was struck by lightning. Not having the mentioned records, genealogists have guessed, and it is only a guess, that the father was one Johannes (John) Foller, a German immigrant from Switzerland who entered the country a little before the middle of the 18th century. But my grandfather also said that several other groups of Feller immigrants have entered the country from Switzerland, at later dates, and each group has carried many of the same given names.

Both the SAR and DAR recognize eleven children of Andreas Foller.

I noticed from your previous posts that you are from Ft. Wayne. My bother use to live there and I believe that one of my father's cousins lived there.

I just ran across your message. We have in our family tree A Maria Anna Feller born 9/8/1861 who married a John Haichaner on 3/1/1861. Knowing the way names got spelled back then I would imagine she is the one you are looking for. If so she was born in St. Leon, Indiana, Dearborn County and her father was John Adam Feller and her mother was Catharine Hefler. She was the sister of my husbands Grandfather. If you go into the ancestry.com and look under the name of John Adam Feller you will find quite a bit of information. The family history is in the computer because I have put it there. My E-Mail address is mrylfell@aol.com.

Ah, no problem. We were all 'new to this' at one time. A small hint though, that will help you in the future. Instead of "Beginning search on family, grandfather was Theodore Feller, he had a brother Elmer Feller from Batesville, In. Ted married Corrinne Andres, from Dover, In area" which was your original query, you might want to include dates so that people know at least what timeframe you're talking about. Mentioning a 'grandfather' only helps a little. Give an approximate date if you aren't sure, such as "probably born between 1900-1910".

If your grandfather is deceased, have you asked living family members where he's buried? Or for any oral or written family history that someone might have? You could use that as a guide to your own research. I just keyed in "Theodore Feller" in the social security death index at www.ancestry.com and found four. You might want to check those out. If you find the cemetery he's buried in, you may also be able to find other relatives in the same cemetery, such as his wife, their parents, siblings, etc.

Have you checked the 1900 or 1910 census yet for that area?
Hi Bill,

Just found your posting this morning. I am a Feller and my ancestors were from the Stark County, Ohio area. My immigrant ancestor was Johannes (John) Feller from Zweisimmen, Canton Bern, Switzerland. He emigrated in 1851 and settled in Canton, Ohio. He had 12 children, some of whom must have descendants in that area, but I have had trouble locating any. Johannes was my great grandfather. My grandfather Frank died young of typhoid in 1911, and my father Frank moved to NYC and then to Florida.

While researching on the internet, I noticed that there is a large family of Fellers in the Hudson River Valley. I'm not sure where they came from, though.

Hope this helps.

Cindy Feller Duffek

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your detailed e-mail. My Swiss Johannes (John)Feller emigrated to America in 1853, aboard the ship Roger Stewart, sailing from Antwerp to New York City. He was 17 years old, and there were no other Fellers on the ship's manifest. I can't imagine him traveling all alone. I have all the documentation for this. Another Feller cousin of mine hired a researcher to do some Feller research in Switzerland. She came up with a few generations back, all located in the area of Zweisimmen, Canton Bern, Switzerland. I have no idea how my John Feller got to Ohio other than some unproven notes that he went to the Canton area to work for his uncle (surname Buchs). But I cannot find him in any of the early censuses. John eventually married a woman named Julia Schissler, from New York City. I'm wondering if they met when he arrived in New York and that they all traveled together to Ohio with her family. Nothing proven yet, though. They were not married until they got to Ohio, however.

I've also corresponded with another Feller whose family settled in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. They're also from Switzerland, but not Zweisimmen.

I don't think Bob Feller is a relative, although my uncle named one of his sons Bob Feller.

Regarding the Frank name. My father was Marion Franklin, as was his father. Both men changed their names to Frank when they were adults. Can't imagine why!!!

Regarding the Hudson Valley Fellers, I have no connection with them that I know of. They arrived about 100 years before my John. One interesting note is that an ancestor of my mom's who lived in the Hudson Valley married an Andreas Feller, way back.

If I get any more information, I will gladly share it. Are we related or is yours another Feller line?

Cindy Duffek

Feller DNA

The Feller surname is spread throughout Europe, and of course the western hemisphere. It seems to have numerous variations of spelling, such as Foeller, Voeller, Veller, Weller(to name a few). Dna testing is obviously becoming more common all the time, and the cost seems to becoming affordable too, considering the genealogical info that may be gleaned. If you join a DNA family group already testing, there are discounts(maybe $70 range). A 37 marker test can get you back 400 yrs. Knowing which group you belong to can further your research, helping determine which direction to go, or maybe which direction is a waste of time. Of course, this is all referring to yDNA testing, tracing just male ancestry. I am just now preparing to do the testing with a Feller group. Are there others out there considering testing or have done it? We could use a lot more discussion on this, please.

My grand mother the first born in the US and always told me that her cousin was Bob Feller the baseball player, but I have never been able to find a connection.
My great grandparents eventually had 13 children and there are a lot of Feller descendents in and around Council Bluffs, IA.
I have been working on my Feller Family Tree for about 4 years and have not been able to find any information about them in Germany.
Joe

Thank you for replying. It is frustrating to not find clues to my swiss line for all these years. I don't really have many clues to my gggrandfather Nicholas in Switzerland. I do know from his will that his Name was spelled Nicholas Gaefeler. His wife's name was Anna Rufenocht or Rivenacht. However, his children's names in the will (Probably due to "English-tizing" them) were spelled Gafeler.

Grace

I believe his brothers came too..and therefore I am wondering if this is a brother. They did indicate Bern in their records. They came to American in 1847. He lived in Starke Co., Ohio (canton area) and some of the children were married and lived in Tuscarawas. Please let me know if anyone has claimed your papers. I would love to review them.
