A novice searching for my history

My partner can trace her family history back to 17th century Marseille, France (100 years before the French revolution), and I thought this was fascinating.

I want to do the same - and trace my family history. It gets hazy around information relating to Richard Fellowes (my grandfather), born Manchester, England around 1870 (I think), died Manchester 1945 approx (before I was born). He had one son [Thomas Henry Fellowes - my father] and three daughters [Joan, Evelyn and Marian Fellowes]. Is there anyone can help me?
