Leona Irene Schulz, 101, of Emmetsburg passed away on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009, surrounded by family and her pastor. Services will be held Friday, April 17, at 10:30 at St. Paul Lutheran Church with visitation Thursday from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. and prayer service at 7 pm at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.
Born Leona Irene Felsing August 28, 1907 in Miner County (Carthage), South Dakota, to Dan and Lydia (Stark) Felsing. She was the second oldest of five children.

On August 28, 1935, she married Hans John Schulz at Laurens and four children were born to them, John, Marguerite, Philip and Carol. They farmed many years near Laurens and Winthrop, Iowa. Leona also worked as a nurse aide.

In 1974 following the death of her husband, she moved to Marathon and later to Emmetsburg, which was home at the time of her death.

Farming and farm living were central to Leona’s life. She raised and tended gardens, chickens and cows, faithfully read the Bible everyday; was an accomplished pump organ musician and seamstress all while raising her family. Her hobbies and interests included practical things like bee keeping, wood carving, needlework, healthy living, listening to one’s body (going to the doctor as little as possible), being content with what she had, moderation in all things. She had a good sense of humor, spent little on herself and was a master at making a dollar stretch.

Her parents, husband and two sons, John and Philip, as well as brothers Calvin, Paul, and Urban Felsing and sister Adelaide Stroppel preceded her in death.

Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Marguerite (Dick) Brawley of Emmetsburg, Carol Felsing (Richard) Wright of Deming, New Mexico and daughters-in-law Carol Schulz of Spencer, Iowa and Clara Schulz of Woodbridge, Virginia. Also surviving are eight grandchildren. Dan (Kathy) Schulz of Marathon, Iowa, Perry Schulz of Broomfield, Colorado, Connie Krough of Emmetsburg, Philip (MariJose) Schulz of Keller, Texas and Mari (Tom) Fries of Woodbridge, Virginia, Curtis Wright of Moundview, Minnesota, John Wright of Deming, New Mexico and Ted (Tonia) Wright of Blue Ridge, Virginia.

Also, nine great-grandchildren who are Desiree Schulz, Philip III and Alex Schulz, Eric, Luke, Sam and Zoe Irene Fries and Amanda and Alora Wright will miss her.
