William Jenks Felt was my great-great grandfather. He and two sons, Jay Ybial Felt and Horace Greeley Felt came to Washington State in 1890. Horace returned to Iowa for his family and then they homesteaded in the Pend'Oreille Valley in about 1892. William died near Newport while deerhunting. He is purported to be the first person to be buried in the Newport WA cemetary. Jay stayed in the Newport area and became very involved in the community. Horace eventually moved onto Humboldt County (near Eureka) California and then onto the Auburn WA area with his wife (Susan Barr Felt) and his children. William & Jay's mother, Sarah Lee (d. 1911) moved with them to Algona (near Auburn). He was a brickmason. Horace was killed on the Interurban train (commuter train between Tacoma & Seattle) in 1909. There is a large gathering of Felt ancestors in the Mt. View Cemetary overlooking the city of Auburn WA. Grandma Susie purchased a tall marker with the Felt family name carved upon it.
My grandfather was Samuel Gordon Felt (married Dorothy L. Woodruff in 1913). His siblings were: Sarah Elizabeth, Grace Lee (Blake), Edna Nell (Franco), Anna Belle (Wright), James Edward, Frances Willard, Blanche Joan (Nascou) and Mildred Bruster (McKee). My great grandmother was expecting Mildred at the time of Horace's death. Sam's children were: Horace Woodruff Felt. Wayne George Felt (1914-), and Madge Marie Felt (1917-2004). My father was Horace (1913-1997) who was married to my mother Margaret Elley Felt (1917-2006). My parents were in the logging business in Washington, as my dad's father had been before him. My mother wrote her first book about working and living in the woods. It is entitled "Gyppo Logger". She continued to write about the history of the timber industry of the Pacific Northwest with assistance from my dad. Alas, there were only two of us: VickiAnne Felt Davis ((1940-2006) and Kimberley Jane Felt Moller.
Wayne has two children: Katheryn Felt and Richard Felt. Madge had no children. My sister had two daughters: VickiSusan Davis Anderson (two sons) and Michelle Davis Benton (3 sons). I have 4 step-children and one biological child: Lisa Moller Seger, Lesli Moller Curl, Kristi Moller Holterman, Scott Everett Moller and Whitney Theresa Moller.
Jay and Horace's families evidently did not have the opportunity for much visiting. My parents, who were always eager to learn more about family history, did find Jay's granddaughter, Bea Felt Murphy, in Coeur d'Alene ID in the mid-1980's. They enjoyed visiting and exchanging letters. Unfortunately, all have passed on now. It was only after my parent's deaths that I learned from letters written in the 1980's that there were more of Uncle Jay's family in the
Tacoma-Seattle area. What a missed opportunity as we lived in and around the Tacoma and then Olympia areas.
I keep in touch with cousins in the Seattle area who are also interested in family history. It would be interesting to hear about your side of the Felt family.
Sincerely,
Kimberley Felt Moller
