David Gernie Felts, b 1874 Wilkes Co, NC

Can anyone help with the death date and location of David Gernie Felts, born 8 May 1874 to Elza M. and Martha McBride Felts in Wilkes County, NC? He headed west with his brother Sein Conklin before 1900 to make his fortune and ended up in Seattle, WA. Sometime after 1930, family history is that he was found dead in a lake and the bill for burial services was sent to my grandfather, David's nephew. Washington death records are online but nothing was found for David. Appreciate any suggestions.

The M.A. Felts that you are referring to in the Blue Ridge Chappel Cemetery is as follows (Identifying all of the headstones in question):

1st Headstone: Jonathan Burnett, Pvt Co. C 29th VA Inf Reg -CSA b. 12 Jun 1821, d. 05 May 1904. (Jonathan Elisha Burnett husband of Ruth Ann Farmer, son of Rebecca Burnett, grandson of Nancy ANNA Burnett, ggrandson of Joseph Burnett and Mabel Melton (Burnett/Bryant)) Note: there are two headstones of Jonathan (the original, and the new military one)

2nd Headstone: M.A. Felts b. 1845 died Oct 25, 1910(Mary (Polly) Ann Burnett, wife of Thomas Crawford Felts, she was the eldest daughter of Jonathan Elisha Burnett and Ruth Ann Farmer)

3rd Headstone: T.C. Felts born 1839, died Feb 22, 1908 (Thomas Crawford Felts, husband of Mary (Polly) Ann Burnett, son of Randolph (Randal) Felts and Mary (Polly) Ann Burnett (this Mary (Polly) Ann Burnett was b. 1797))

Note: Thomas Crawford Felts Co. E. Born in 1839. Enl. 5/29/61 at Wytheville. Sick 11/61. Captured at Waynesboro, 3/2/65. POW Ft. Delaware. Released 6/20/65. 5' 6" tall, light hair, blue eyes, res. Carroll Co. He died 2/22/1908, bur. Blue Ridge Cem.

4th Headstone: W. L. Felts, born March 28, 1880, died April 17, 1922 (Probable Child of Thomas Crawford Felts and Mary (Polly) Ann Burnett)

On the other hand, I did find something interesting, 23 Mar 1825 in Grayson Co, VA, marriage bond Joshua Felts & Polly ?????, noted later as Mary ((May be a Mary (Burnett), as Mary and Polly are interchangeable, not sure)) but, this same couple in 1850 Carroll County, VA Census (note appears to be one taken in 1850 and one in 1851), were Joshua and Mary Felts / Joshua and Polly Felts who were 45 and 46 respectively had an older son Jordan (16/17) living with them at that time, next door was Ransome Lyon/Lion (22) and his wife Elizabeth H. Felts (17/18) - According to Carroll County website, she ws Elizabeth H. Felts (Lyon, Snow) which I believe is the same one you are talking about and the Joshua and Mary (Polly) ((Burnett)) may be the ones you are looking for. As for Mary (Polly) ????'s last name, it could be Burnett, yet she would have to have been born around 1804. There are only a few Burnett's in Carroll County, VA that I can't account for, those being William Burnett b. 1800, Thomas Jefferson Burnett b. 1813, and Mary (Polly) Ann Burnett b.1797 who married Randolph Felts b. 1797 m. 28 Mar 1815 - parents of Thowmas Crawford Felts. Now if Joshua Felts' wife's name was Mary (Polly) ((Burnett)) b. 1804, that makes another I cannot account for.

Note: In the 1860 Carroll County, VA Census records, Joshua and Mary (Polly) Felts were living in Wolfes Glade P.O., Carrol County, VA

Note: In 1860, you have Ransome H. (30) and Elizabeth (27)Lyons, living in Hillsville P.O. and their children were: Charles W. Lyons (12), Osborne Lyons (11), Isaac Lyons (9), Jordan Lyons (7), Ira C. Lyons (5), and Sarah J. Lyons (2).

Note: In 1870, you have Elizabeth Felts Lyons (38) now married to Columbus Snow (21), with the following Children living with them: Charles W. Lyons (21), Analum Lyons ((Osborne Lyons)) (19). Jordan S. Lyons (15), Ira C. Lyons(13), and Sarah J. Lyons (11).

I hope this is helpful<

The link to the website is:

http://www.vagenweb.org/carroll/names/carr_ndx.htm

Clyde Aaron Burnett

Felts of Surry/Sussex Counties, VA

Seeking information on the Felts family of Surry and Sussex Counties in Virginia.

I’m specifically trying to verify if Elizabeth “Eliza” Adkins, wife of Lewis Adkins was related to the Felts family.

My reason for asking is the five (5) members of the Felts family were godparents to three (3) of her children.

Elizabeth/Eliza was born circa 1720. Information abstracted from the Register of Albemarle Parish: Surry and Sussex Counties, VA 1739-1778. The order of birth listed below only represents the order as listed in the Parish registry. (There may have been more children born, however I cannot verify it)

The second child born to Lewis Adkins and wife Eliza was Lewis born 8/22/1745; his godparents were Nathaniel Felts, Nathaniel Felts, Jr., and Sarah Woodland (this Lewis is my direct ancestor)

The fourth child born to Lewis Adkins and wife Eliza was Mary born 2/22/1748; her godparents were Richard Felts, Jane Seat, and Frances Williams

The fifth child born to Lewis Adkins and wife Eliza was William born 8/17/1754; his godparents were Robert Seat, John and Elizabeth Felts

Does anyone have within their family history files, an Eliza or Elizabeth Felts that fits the above description?

I’ve also seen a passing reference regarding Thomas Adkins (the eldest child of Lewis and Eliza Adkins) being the godparent to a child of Nathaniel Felts.

Any help is greatly appreciated,
Lyle
Since William A.s son, John was born in 1854, I believe it is his father William A. is the will probated in 1861. I am related to the Felts, through the Sandusky's but that name has been hard to trace for me, and I lived in the same community as the Felts for many years in Nevada Co. Arkansas. I remember talking with Joeph Edgar Felts about some of the family before he died. And I have gathered some obits of some of the Felts original obits before the funeral home here was flooded with water. But as time passes so do our ancestors, and some of their material will never be seen again. Not much to go on, but just my opinion

JC Ridling

Joshua and Mary Burnett Felts are ancestors of mine through their daughter, Elizabeth Felts Lyons Snow. Today I was at Blue Ridge Chapel and found a gravestone for M. A. Felts beside two Burnett gravestones, leading me to believe this could be Mary Ann Burnett Felts; however, the stone beside her was for a T. C. Felts, not Joshua. Did he remarry and be buried somewhere else, or is this not Mary Burnette Felts at all?

Thank you so much for that information. As you know, some people are never satisfied :-) so I'll ask another question: Elizabeth Felts Lyons Snow was first married to Ransome Lyons. I have their a copy of their marriage certificate and a copy of the permission slip Joshua and Mary wrote to allow her to marry at age 16. I'll be happy to send you a copy if you would like. Now my next question: Do you have any idea what happened to Ransome. His grandson told me he died in the war. He disappeared in the right time frame, but I can't document his death (and so many Civil War dead were buried unidentified.)

As of now, I have no information on the names you mentioned. However, I do not have extensive information on the Felts family other than my direct line - Virginia Frances Felts who married James Wiley Stoneman, her father, Jordan, Jordan's father, Crawford and Crawford's father, Randolph. From Randolph, I have Nathaniel, his father, Francis and grandfather, Humphrey. It is very possible that the names you have may well be included in this family line. Sorry I can't be of better help to you. If you make any connections, I would love to know who they are.

R. Brakhage
Dear Ms. Watts,

I have been gathering information on Martha A. Felts, daughter of Nathaniel and Susan Felts, born about 1847 in Robertson County [District 15], Tenn. The last reference I can find on her was in the 1870 Cheatham County Census living with Susan Felts. Martha's siblings were David I., Elizabeth, Sally, Thomas, Leander, Joseph, Susan, James, and
Robert Felts.

I strongly believe that his Martha is my Great Grandmother. I have found information that ties her to three sons, William Frank Felts [DOB 1868], George Pearly Felts [DOB 09/28/1876] and Charles David Felts [DOB06/18/1881] my Grandfather.

In recent correspondence with Richard (Dick) Felts, he told me that you had information from a Bible listing a Martha Ann Mariah Felts, born 02/10/1847. Can you confirm if this is the same Martha as above? Do you have this Bible or can you give me contact information on the owner? I would like to get a copy of the Bible pages that list information on any Felts family members.

Hope to hear from you soon.

David

Re: Sussex/Surry county, VA-- Felts Family

The following is the history of the Felts family that I have gathered over the past few years from the National Archives and the Robertson County and Cheatham County, TN records.

I started my family history search with my grandfather, Charles David Felts (DOB 6-18-1881). Beginning with his Social Security application, I found that Charles David listed his father’s name as “Do Not Know” and his mother’s name as “Martha Felts”. This information, for a while, lead me nowhere. But, through a sister (Jessis Freeman Armstrong) of Charles David’s second wife (Maggie Mae Freeman), I discovered that Charles David had a brother named George Pearly Felts. In George Pearly’s obituary, two brothers were listed, “Charles” and “Frank”. Also, sometime around 1899-1900, Charles David lived with a Frank & Ola Felts. With this information, I started studying the wills, probate, and census records.

In the 1900 census, I was able to locate Charles David in the same household of a Frank & Ola Felts, but at this point I was unable to determine the relationship. I did locate the marriage record of a W.F. Felts to Ola Mayo, Nov. 10, 1892.

In the 1880 census of Cheatham County, I found a Martha in the household of Susan Felts. Also listed were two grandson, William F. and George. Martha and William show up again with Susan in the 1870 census.

The 1860 census of Cheatham County list a Nat. Felts, wife S. Felts and five children. One of who was M.A. Felts of the same age group as Martha above.

I have been unable to discover anything of the death of Martha. I have found information of the possible existence of a 1881 birth record for Charles David in Cheatham County. However, a review of the County Court Clerk’s records did not turn up the birth record I hoped for.

Sometime between 1850 and 1860, Cheatham County was created out of parts of Davidson and Robertson Counties.

There were two Nathaniel M. Felts’ of the same generation in Robertson County. Both had wives named Susan. Of their known children, five had the same names. The 1850 census indicated the one Nathaniel was born in South Carolina (I’ll call him ‘Nathaniel SC’) and the probate record clearly indicates he had connections to that state.

On the 1830 census for North Carolina, Nathaniel SC (the oldest) had two sons under 5 years-of-age. Nathaniel NC (the one I believe is my ancestor) had one son and two daughters. This one comes closer to matching the Nathaniel on the 1850 & 1860 census with Martha, age 3 & 13.

A study of the 1820 census indicated that there were only two families that Nathaniel could have descended from, either James or Isham. Each of these men had two sons in the 16-26 age category. James and Isham Felts were settlers in Robertson County. I have not determined what happened to James at this time. Isham died in 1825 and a probate record is recorded in the Davidson County Clerk’s Office. I do not know if it is a will or simply administration records, I have not attempted to review them yet.

I believe that Isham lived in the general area where Nathaniel NC lived. Sycamore Creek was the dividing line between Robertson and Davidson Counties in the early 1800’s before Cheatham County was formed. I have also found some deeds in Cheatham involving Nancy and W.W. Felts (son and daughter of Isham) which indicate the land they owned was located in that part of the county that was previously Davidson County.

With regard to Nathaniel NC’s father, it may have been Isham. The middle initial of Nathaniel NC’s first son David is “I”. What else could this have stood for?

As you can see from the above, I believe that my Tennessee branch is related to the Sussex County, VA - Humphrey Felts.

If you have any additional information that confirms the information that I have collected and would appreciate your help.

David

The earliest Humphrey is found in Virginia is in the Surry County, Virginia Titheables. (white) June 10, 1674. He was listed in the Surry County Tithable 1674 - Humphrey Felps 2 and 1678 Surry Titheables with Thomas Turner.(1) Since boys were considered adults at age 17, Humphrey's birthdate would be about 1657. He married Helen about 1677. \
Source: Surry County, Virginia Court Records Order Book IV, 1671 - 1691, by Weynette P. I have been to Cary Felts' resting place and the marker is broken into three pieces. I am working on the history of Una, TN and have found that Cary Felts was one of the early residents of former Civil District 5 in Davidson County, TN.

If you are planning on a ceremony for the occasion, we could invite the media and the press.

I have only been doing geneology for a few months and have gotten about 5 generations back but only on one of my grandparents. I am stumped on the Felts' back 3 generations from my father. Any information would be so appreciated!! Thank you! Melanie Felts Fagan melatyou@msn.com

I am also researching from John T. Felts (dob 1859) married to Julia J Willis Felts (dob 1918) they had 9 children. If anyone has any information I would so appreciate it!!! Until last week, I have always thought my family just "ended" with my grandfather, Clay Houston Felts. I have found 5 generations so far and would be very grateful if anyone knows anything. Please contact me at melatyou@msn.com
Thank you!
M. Felts

Steve: I've been able to track my Felts line back to Nathaniel M. Felts (born 1803 in North Carolina) and his wife Susannah Frey (born 1808 in Tennessee). My connection is through their son Robert Westley (or Werthy) followed by Robert's son James David followed by James's son Jerome Jackson. Jerome is my grandfather.

Do you have my Nathaniel M. Felts in your information anywhere? I'd be happy to share what I've gathered.

Dick Felts
