Re: George and Mark Feltus Family, County Carlow, Ireland to U.S. 1854-59

There were 8 children: George, James, William, John, Elizabeth, Mark, Mary and Sarah.
Mark Feltus came over on the ship "New World" Oct 25, 1854. The ship manifest lists him as 21. He came with James, a brother I'm assuming, who was 32 and a young man named Michael, 18, also a Feltus, but I don't know the connection. Unless it was William or John who went by a middle name. (the age difference would be right) Mark went from New York to Chicago, to Amboy IL. Then finally settled with George in IA. Mark was naturalized in Dec 1859.
George came over on the "James Foster Jr." June 8, 1857, with his wife Ellen, son James about 2 and a baby boy about 6 mo. I can't read the name of the baby. He died sometime before the 1870 census. I wasn't able to find any of them on the 1860 census. I'm not sure where they were living then. According to family history, they moved quite a bit before they settled in IA. George and James became naturalized the same day Oct 24, 1876.
I have a copy of the marriage license for George and his wife, Ellen, Oct 25, 1847. Bally William Roe Parrish of Dunleckney in the County of Carlow. George's father's name is listed as James. Sarah made her mark as a witness.

Dear Kerri, Thank you for replying to me about my William Charles Feltus relative. When I visited my cousin Beverly who lives in Arizona several years ago she gave me a family listing of all the feltus relatives who go back to William C . He was born in County Carlo in Ireland and died 2/27/1893 in Beebe Plains, Quebec. The date of his birth says ABOUT being born in 1808. I have several listings on this message board about my Feltus relatives. William C. had six sons. I would like to find out what his wife's maden name was. On the chart his first wife's names was unknown. Best wishes, Roger Feltus. carchrie@capecod.net William C.'s second wife's name was Bessie MacMann. They had four children; Josiah Fredrick, Elizabeth M., Joseph Feltus , and David Alfred
I'm not sure how he would be related. I just know that there were very few Feltus family members in County Carlow. I don't even know where exactly Hollybrook is. I just found it yesterday. Hopefully we can piece it all together. My records do not indicate who the parents of Rev. Henry James Feltus were. I do know that he had money when he arrived in New York and took over as rector of a big church. It still exists today, but they don't know anything about him.

No, There were apparently very few Feltus family members. The voter registration of Adam and the mention of living at Hollybrook is all that I have found. The book "County Carlow Gentry" just mentions that Hollybrook was one of the big fine homes in County Carlow. It doesn't mention who lived there. The registration is how I found that Adam Feltus lived there.
I knew that the Rev. Henry James Feltus had money when he arrived here. He came to New York and was the rector of a large church which still exists.

Dear Gene Kirk, Do you have a written family tree of Henry James Feltus? How would he be related to William C. Feltus of County Carlow, Ireland? My Willaim Charles was born May 20, 1842 in County Carlo, Ireland. He died in Stanstead, Quebec, Canada May 20, 1917. He had six sons. I would like to find out William wife's maden name. Call me if you want after 8 pm 508 790 4165. Best regards, Roger James Feltus of Hyannis, Massachusetts.

feltus was born May 20, 1842

It is possible that he was a brother of Rev. Henry James Feltus (my ancestor). Henry James was born in County Carlow in 1775. I have found an Adam Feltus in County Carlow
who registered to vote and listed his home as Hollybrook in Carlow County. This was one of the sixty homes of the "Carlow Gentry". This means that the family was rich!

Your William HAD to be related to my ancestor, Henry James Feltus who was also born in County Carlow in 1775. There was ,also, an Adam Feltus listed in Carlow voter registration who listed home as Hollybrook. This was supposedly one of the "Landed Gentry" homes. One of sixty in Carlow.
I am looking for info on a William FELTUS that came from Ireland approximately mid 1800's. According to the *Feltus Family Book*, written 1917, he resided in Elizabeth, N.J. He had two children that were listed, at that time. Robert, resided in Elizabeth N.J. and Mary (Mrs. Thomas Dillon) resided in Jersey City, N.J.

There were several siblings: William, resided in Elizabeth, N.J., George (my line) resided in Clarksville, IA, James, resided in Kingsley, IA, Mark, resided in Allison, IA, Sarah, resided in Connecticut, Mary, resided in Vailsburg, N.J., Elizabeth resided in Manitowac, Wis, and John, whom I am assuming that resided in New Jersey, since in first son resided in N.J.

Hello, my name is Brigette Feltus and my great grandfather was William Feltus Sr., your great great grandfather. Your great grandfather William Ed Jr. was the oldest brother of my grandfather. I have pretty much all the information you need regarding his nine children, and the whereabouts of their decendants. Ironically, William Sr., his wife Lucy, and five children moved to California, and a series of events, caused us to lose knowledge of the two older brothers who did not come with them. That's a long story, and I will be glad to share all I've discovered in the last year, including a family website with photos of your family all over the country. We are a huge family. You can reach me via email at bfeltus@earthlink.net
I would love to help, and also get to know you. I'll be waiting!!
Your cousin, Brigette

Hi Harriet,

My husband's gg grandfather was George Feltus, brother of Mark. It is great to find more "relatives". I have been in contact with your dad about three or four years ago. He gave me a lot of info. I was finally able to get some info from Mike's family, but I got most of it from your dad. Mike and I just celebrated our thirty third year of marriage, so I feel like I am a 'true" Feltus.

Blessings,
Lois Feltus

Old Letters from Aimee Fraley (sister of Gassner)

You are not going to believe how excited to have found your family so soon! I am in possession of letters written to my husband's uncle during the 1920's and 30's in which Gassner and other family members are referred.

Evidently Aimee had a long standing friendship with Leslie "Jeff" Anfinson from San Francisco whom she met while on vacation in Yosemite during the summer of 1925. Their letters span the years until after she is married and with two children.

I am presently transcribing them so that they will be available to your family is interested - and will happily copy them if you would like to see her handwriting firsthand.

The letters came into our possession upon the death of the uncle several years ago and we finally got around to organizing and reading them. As a history teacher I realize the value of the printed word and these are a real treasure.

Sure wish we could read the letters the uncle wrote to her. We have long suspected that she was the reason he never married. Her family probably would not have considered him to be well off enough for her as his family were Norwegian immigrants who lived in San Francisco. He was a semi-pro baseball player on the teams playing for the old Pacific Coast League.

More if you are interested --this is the stuff for a good movie!!

Best regards to all interested.

Lawrene Nixon Anfinson
Post Office Box 817
Great Falls, Virginia 22066

PS We are originally from southern California.

I can make an excellent guess. An Abram Morrell Feltus 1796-1861 was the son of Rev Henry James Feltus 1775 1828.

Abram Morrell Feltus moved from New York City to eventually have a plantation in Woodville, Miss. Quite a few Feltus's owned plantations around Woodville and Natchez and such.

I suspect that is exactly where the name comes in.

Rev Henry James Feltus was an emigrant from Ireland.

Alot of info exists on the matter if you are interested. I would be very interested if you had any information.
Sam Feltus
clmf8@yahoo.com

There is a Feltus in New Orleans, an elderly gentleman, who was originally from the plantations in Mississippi. He is a bishop in one of the African-American churches there. He has a lot of the history that will probably answer most ( if not all ) of your questions.

He was the son of Mark Feltus (b. 11-19-1833 and d. 12-17-1889) and Margaret Moffat (b. 3-5-1846 and d. 4-7-1890) His siblings were John Henry, Edith Rosella, William James, Mary Mabel, and Ruby Margaret. George was born 3-29-1870 and died 4-3-57. He married my grandmother Erma Ruth Gallagher (b. 12-14-1885 and d. 4-17-1977) on 4-24-07. To this union were born 5 sons, Donald G. on 2-23-08, Austin Howard in 1-10, Paul John on 10-21-11, Robert Dale on 4-20-14, Faith Theone on 4-11-19, and finally my father Willard David on 2-15-23. He lives in Charles City, IA. I am one of 8 children.
