Hello Christine,
Like you I am researching the Fenby family and the name George Fenby goes through a number of generations.
George Henry Fenby was born abt 1819 (in England?) and died Corryong Victoria 1893. Would love to think that this George is the one, with his mother, who was transported for stealing a pair of shoes BUT some of the other details do not gel.
Would love to hear from you regarding any solid evidence you have to include, or exclude, the George Fenby (transported)from our family tree.

PS Fenby is my wife's family name.

Regards

Dennis Price

She was born Carol Fenby. Her Great Great grandfather was George Fewnby born abt 1819 and died 1893 in Corryong.

Clearly we are talking of the same family and would love to get in touch with you.

Can you ring me on 03 9802 1696, or give me your number and I will call you.

Living in hope

Dennis Price

I saw your 3 year old message just now.

In trying to sort out my own Fenby families I ended up growing a tree of all the Fenby's I could find in the England & Wales Censuses.

The tree is Public (Fenby Families in E&W Census 1841-1901). You will find Eric P Fenby on there. I hope this helps!

If anyone can add to this tree please get in touch.

My own interest lies with the line containing Rickman Fenby b. 1805 Filey.

Hello
I found your name on Ancestry's message board with referance to Fenby's from Yorkshire England. My grandfather was named Eric Price Fenby son of Homan Price Fenby. I am trying to trace this family and I was wondering if you have any information you might like to share as I belive that your Fenby's and mine are related in some way. I have traced my direct line back to early 1700's but I am still looking to fit others in to my family.
I hope to hear from you.
Regards
Kay

<< I have, but can not find at the moment a letter from Olga Fenby (Tracy Fenby's wife) detailing the family history and recording the year when Peter with his hugh family migrated from near Beverly England. Their ship was commandeered by French privateers and forced into Boston. Later they made it to Baltimore. >>

If you find this information, please let me know. The information we have on my husband's family indicates that he is descended from Samuel Fenby b. 1781 Beverley, Yorkshire, England, who I believe to be a brother of Peter. I'd be interested in learning anything more you have on the family.

Based on my research, I think this is correct. I believe William's parents were Peter FENBY Jr., b. 1787 ENG, and Alley/Ally/Allice DAVIS, b. about 1789 MD, m. 1813 Baltimore MD. All census records say that William was born in MD. Peter FENBY Jr.'s brother Samuel, b. 1781 ENG, was my husband's 3rd great-grandfather. Peter and Samuel's parents may have been Peter FENBY, b. 1755 ENG d. 1827 MD, and Ann FLETCHER, b. 1762 ENG d. before 1810 MD. I have information about the family gathered from the BI IGI, census records and various published church and genealogical records, which I'd be happy to share.

My reference shows Bella Pridgin Carlill marrying .... Adams, a Shipwright at St. Ives. It shows her brother, "James Bellamy Carlill, a silversmith at York, removed to the Island of Malta." It also shows that the father of George Carlill of Little Weighton, who married Elizabeth Fenby (prior wife was Ann Levett) and who removed to Walkington, had a father James Carlill of Little Weighton, yeoman, buried in 1697, and his father George Carlill of Little Weighton, buried at Rowley, in 1661. There is also a note that James, Bella's father, accidentally came to Cornwall because he was shipwrecked on his way from Hull to America. Maybe you've seen all this.

August 7, 1746:
Whereas John, the Husband of Mary Fenby, hath advertis'd her in this Paper, as eloped from him, &c., tho' 'tis well known, they parted by Consent, and agreed to divide their Goods in a Manner which he has not yet been so just as fully to comply with, but detains her Bed and Wedding Ring: And as she neither has, nor desires to run him in Debt, believing her own Credit to be full as good as his; so she desires no one would trust him on her Account, for neither will she pay any Debts of his contracting.
MARY FENBY

I am not related to this family, I am just passing on this information, which comes from a book titled "Runaway Women, Elopements And Other Miscreant Deeds, As Advertised In The Pennsylvania Gazette - 1728 -1789. (together with a few abused wives and unfortunate children)." Compiled by Judith Ann Highley Meier. Published by Closson Press. 1993.
This is info on Weddel I got from a web site called; www.gencircles.com;
Weddel, male had 2 children, Elizabeth Weddel and Hetty (Hetty has a face logo beside it on the gencircles site which means there is more detailed history on her.)
There must be a mistake in them being sisters, they must be mother and daughter, look at the dates,

Elizabeth Weddel b. 30 sep 1834 in ON d. 12 May 1908, married Peter Belfry ABT. 1856 here are the 9 children listed. The * indicates the logo on gencircles I told you about, more details on that person;
1. Annie Elizabeth Belfry
2. Robert Henry Belfry *
3. Mary Josephine Belfry
4. Peter Belfry
5. Amy Catharine Belfry
6. Aidie Melissa Belfry
7. Thirza Belfry
8. Francis Allen Belfry *9. Jennie Belfry

Here is Hetty Weddel;
b. 1852 d. 1932 Father-Weddel
married Samuel Pegg in Sutton, York, ON
Their 6 children, * more info on gencircles web site,
1. Annie Pegg
2. William Pegg*
3. Filey Pegg*
4. Mulock Pegg*
5. Samuel J. Pegg*
6. Francis Pegg
Here is another Elizabeth Weddel that married a Pegg;
Elizabeth Weddel b. 1839 d. 1908 Father-Weddel
husband, William Pegg
This William Pegg could be the 2nd child of Hetty, I have he was b. 1884 d. 1969.
I hope this helps if you need this info. The Weddell connection seems minor but it is interesting to have collateral info.
Again, I got this info from http://www.gencircles.com
Good luck!
Theresa Weddell
bweddell@prodigy.net
Austin, TX
George Fenby

Hullo Doug,
I am also searching for information about George Fenby b. abt. 1820 in England. His mother's name was Hannah and he and his Mother (George was aged 10) were transported to Tasmania, Australia in 1829 as convicts for stealing 2 prs. shoes. George was released from his sentence in 1836 and we have no record of what happened to him for about the next 10 years; then the name George Fenby appeared on a family death certificate as the first husband (no marriage cert. found yet) of my husband's g.grandmother; they had ch. named Hannah, Marianna, Jane, & George William between 1840 and 1846. He was listed as being a Sawyer in Geelong, Vic. during that time. He disappeared off the scene about 1848 and I have not been able to find any trace of him, i.e. death certificate, accident etc. Ellen, his wife married in 1849. and her husband apparently adopted the previous children. She had several more children.
My daughter found your query on a list and forwarded it on to me. Is it possible that your George Fenby spent some of his early life in Australia and eventually went to Canada to make a new life for himself. All the names you mentioned tie in and the dates are all similar.

Hoping to hear from you

Christine Mason

Bob, It's possible that the Leah who married Edwin Fenby was Leah J. Wayne, although he is listed as Edwin Jones Fenby. If so, they married 30 Aug. 1916 in Tacoma, WA. Her parents were Jasper Wayne (son of James Nathaniel Wayne and Cynthia Pratt) and Emma Tyas Horsfalls. The source of this info is the Bolles genealogy by Gerald L.
Thomas Fenby of Preston By Hedon, Yorkshire, England

I am interested in learning if the Thomas Fenby who married Ann HARDY on 10 Feb 1751 in Preston By Hedon, Yorkshire, England is the same Thomas Fenby who was the father of Mary Fenby born 1755 . We've never known anything but his name until this "new" data recently turned up.
(Mary Fenby married Robert Gibson (Jr.) on 11 May 1780 in Easington, Yorkshire, England. Their daughter Diana grew up to marry George CAVIL (or Cavill or Caville) in 1817 Beverley, Yorkshire, England. George and Diana immigrated to Canada in 1820 aboard the same vessel as my Dad's CRAIG line (from Paisley, Scotland). Two of George and Diana Cavil's children married two of William and Janet Craig's children)
There is *another* Thomas Fenby of Preston By Hedon, Yorkshire, England who married Mary WOOD in August of 1796, 31 years later. I'm thinking he may be a *son* of the Thomas in question.
Any assistance, and all suggestions, are very, very welcome.

Barbara (Craig) Wright
Slidell, Louisiana USA
BL30x90@aol.com

Thank you for the information. Most of it matches what I have and you have given me some additional bits of info that are helpful. One important correction is that Edwin B Fenby did not die childless. He married Martha Smith and had 2 children. Their names were John Smith Fenby (my Grandfather)and Edwin Fenby. John married Grace Richmond and they had 2 children. They were Caroline (my mother). The other child was a female who died shortly after were birth. I do not recall her name. John and his father were both medical doctors. John had his practice in Baltimore. At one point he was the head of pediadtrics at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He died in Baltimore in the 1960's. John's bother Edwin married Leah ----? At one point he was the chief forrest ranger at Mt. Ranier National Forrest. They were childless but adopted a boy and named him Edwin. Edwin was also a Forrest Ranger near Eugene, Or.

I have (but can't find at the moment) a lot of material on the Baltimore Fenby's I am from the group of them that moved to Carroll County Maryland. Willam Fenby was a slave owner who build a large house that still stands on State Rd. 97 a few miles north of Finksburg. I have a picture of William with his entire family. William would be my great grandfather. William's sons were Edwin, ???, Franklin Peter, John, and Thomas.

I think Edwin died childless.

John was an doctor who moved to Washington DC. He had one daugher Louise, who never married. She may still be living near Washington.

Thomas was developmentally handicap and died young.

Franklin Peter is my grandfather. An 1863 date for is birth is about right since he was a Junior at Western Maryland College in Westminister MD in 1881 (the year president Garfield was shot). I have Franklin Peter's journal from that year in college.

William Fenby also had one daughter who "married a Geist and moved to Florida."

Franklin Peter had three sons and two daughters. Tracy, Jonathan Jones, and Frank Wheeler (my father). One of the daughter, who had been married, died in a mental hospital in California. The other daughter Philina married a Methodist Minister Melvin Kay. He was assigned circuts on the Easter shore of Maryland. But kept a vacation home near his his father's mill just south of Finksburg. Franklin Peter was married to Philena Tracy.
P>
Tracy contracted TB and died. Jonthan had one son Wallace who had a large family.

The youngest son (Peter, I think) died as an infant.

Frank Wheeler Fenby was born in 1902 and died near Exeland Wisconsin in 1984.

I have, but can not find at the moment a letter from Olga Fenby (Tracy Fenby's wife) detailing the family history and recording the year when Peter with his hugh family migrated from near Beverly England. Their ship was comendeered by French privateteers and forced into Boston. Later they made it to Baltimore.

Bob, I'm not familiar with your particular branch. I thought maybe you were from the Baltimore
Fenbys who originated from Peter Fenby. Peter came to the Colonies
as a British Soldier in 1812. I descend from William Fenby who
emigrated to Ontario, Canada, about 1840, I think. If you send your e-mail address to me at
ssf@kahlenvironmental.com, I can send you the name and address of a lady in the UK who has
done a lot of work on the Fenbys, although primarily in Yorkshire. I don't know if she can
help with your Nottingham Fenbys.
