I was recently at a large cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama. In the older section, there was a somewhat lonely looking headstone for what appeared to be a Union soldier of the Civil War.

I photographed the marker because as a genealogy researcher myself, I thought descendants might wonder about their ancestor, Joseph E. Fenn and appreciate any information about him. I'm attaching a photo of his marker.

Perhaps it will be comforting to know that his remains were buried at Elmwood and he has not been forgotten. Note that someone recently has placed a U.S. flag near his marker.

This is my great-grandfather. In the 1850 census, I have him with his parents, Thomas and Jane Hunt Fenn, and his siblings, John, Joseph, Ann and Leonard. Adolphus or Albert was born later. John had a full life as a miner in the West, Joseph died in the Civil War, Ann and Leonard--I don't know. Albert lived in East St. Louis, Il. William was married three times and had several children, his youngest, my grandmother, Nora.

Excuse the intrusion; I have been trying to research my family on my father’s side. I can’t seem to find information regarding my Grandfather, his name was Edward P. Cook. I do know however that there is a bloodline to the name Fenn in Iowa. The localities are different though… I was told there was a relation to an Earl Fenn in either Clinton, IA or Camanche, IA which is near Clinton. Also, the name Lester Cook in that area.

Have you found information for the Earl Fenn you are searching or may you have information linking the Fenn family to the Cook family in Iowa? I think Fenn could be my great-grandmother’s maiden name. My grandfather, Edward P. Cook married Vera Morgan and lived in Chicago. He died in the 1950’s before I was born and my grandmother (now deceased) didn’t have much to do with his side of the family.

If we can help each other, or if you have info I can use, My email address is: epcook@sbcglobal.net

Thomas Fenn in Surrey

I have now found that Thomas Fenn of Bedford Square (1821 - 1901) was son of Thomas Fenn and Ann Burl who in 1841 were living in large home Fairmile (now a Premier Inn) near Cobham in Surrey. Afterwards Thomas and Ann moved into Cobham village and died in 1856 and 1854 respecively. Now trying to trace back to all local connections. My GGfather, Thomas Edward Fenn married (2nd wife) Amelia Jane Farley from Walton on Thames. Any further info or leads much appreciated! Also trying to find what happened to George Keyworth Fenn brother of my GGfather. Wonder if he emigrated? Unusual second name if he continued to use it!

There was no obit in the Rockford paper when he died, just a list of the names of the men who had died which was about 100. How are you interested in the Fenn name. My mother was a Fenn from Walnut Illinois. Sheila

I have a few more Fenns in the London area to add to this growing list. My grandmother was a Florence Constance Valentine Fenn, born 1888 in 13 The Village, Child's Hill, Hendon. Florence married Archibald Elliot Parkinson. Her father was Charles Maxwell Fenn, born 1862 in 102 Shoe Lane, West London. He married Sarah Ann Hilder. Charles Maxwells' father was William Fenn (no date of birth). He was an ostler (a stableman) and he married Ann Elizabeth Williams.

Not many dates for people but if some of the names or addresses fit then please let me know as I do have many links to other names.

Hello Lucy,
I'd be really grateful for any information you have. My maternal grandfather was William John Doddington Fenn (born Poplar 1877), my great-grandfather Frederick Fenn (born Poplar 1846) and my great-great-grandfather was Robert Fenn (wife Hannah) who was born in Suffolk (in Nacton or Ramsholt depending on which census entry is the correct one - between 1816 and 1821). Any information which could take me back further than Robert would be much appreciated.
Thnak you,
Erica
