Hi David

Thanks for all that information - it fills in some gaps but makes a lot of sense. My father (Arthur's grandson) always said the family were from Sligo. And we were definitely Protestant! It's nice to see how the family names carry on too with my grandfather, Victor, being named for his uncle. Arthur was/is a middle name for both my father and my brother. And of course, I remember now, it's Hubert, not Hugo. My father's sadly no longer with us so the details he told me are fading in my mind.

Dad had a copy of the letter Thomas wrote to Arthur telling him to come out to S America - he got it from a cousin but I've no idea, sadly, what became of it. Anyway, it was an interesting letter giving details of how much things cost et cetera. He was very enthusiastic. How sad that he was dead by the time his brother arrived.

Interesting also to see how the medical career spanned a couple of generations. Young Victor was always known as 'Doc' to his sons. Funnily enough, the South American links also continue: Doc married a girl who was born in Mexico City, and my brother is now married to a Chilean.

Shame to read from katsbaan that the Edward/Geoffrey Fenton links seem to be a myth.

Kind regards,

Anna

Hello Ben, and others.

I've found out some more information from a discovered contact whose name I won't mention as he's not aware that I'm quoting him here, but he's highly reliable. It's as follows [slightly edited]:

"Arthur was born in the townland of Castletown, parish of Easkey, barony of Tireragh, County of Sligo.

He was one of eight children, seven boys and a girl, of a Protestant family that had been living in Sligo for about 130 years. Before that, the family lived in Co Wicklow, near Rathnew.

Of the sons of Michael Fenton (1817-1873), Thomas, the eldest, Victor, George and Arthur all qualified as doctors. All four of them were in Patagonia at some time.

Thomas (1850-1886) was the first to go out, in 1875.At the time Punta Arenas was a penal colony on the Straits of Magellan and the southernmost outpost of Caucasian settlement in the world. After the development of steam navigation, the Straits became the fastest and safest route to the Pacific coast of the Americas. Nobody had formally claimed the Patagonian territories and the penal colony at PA was the only white settlement for 1000 miles in any direction when Thomas arrived. The Chilean government was recruiting people to help turn the place from a colony into a proper city, not least to prevent the Argentinians dominating the area. So Thomas probably answered an ad in the English or Irish classifieds. The founding father of Chile, Generalissimo Bernardo O'Higgins, was from a Sligo family, so it is possible there was some kind of personal link.
However it happened, Thomas arrived with his young wife Mary, daughter of Richard McMunn, also a doctor from Easkey (they must have been two a penny in the area, another good reason to emigrate!).
They produced children fairly regularly and had lots of adventures in what was basically a Wild West (South) town. . After performing a particularly big favour to the local government, which involved amputating the governor's wife's leg on the lawn of his own home, Thomas was given a vast tract of land as a reward. Not quite knowing what to do with it, but coming from farming stock, he got together with another landholder and went off to the Falkland Islands to buy some sheep. To cut a long story short, the two of them effectively started the Patagonian sheep farming industry which was at one time the largest in the world. It's hardly surprising that Thomas thought he could get the rest of his family, who were having a rough time of it with land reform laws in Ireland, involved in this action.
In 1885, he wrote back to Sligo to say he had got Arthur a job as doctor to the infant Argentine colony of Santa Cruz, about 150 miles away on the Atlantic coast. Whenever Arthur arrived, by the following October, Thomas was dead from pneumonia, apparently contracted while going out in a blizzard to deliver a breech-baby.
Information about Arthur is more limited but he did very well as a doctor, had a senior position in the local government and married Emma, the young widow of a man called Greenshields (I think they had only been married a matter of months when he died). Emma was the sister of Mary McMunn (small world down there then, still is.)
Greenshields had this ranch called Monte Dinero (Mount Money) which Arthur took over.
Meanwhile, Emma's sister Mary, a widow with six kids, had remarried and with her new husband built up Fenton Station into a massive concern. They started making serious money, especially when the Great War drove up the price of wool.
Arthur and Emma had three children: Victor, Hubert and Geraldine. Victor probably went to live in the UK and married. Hubert had a son called John.
Arthur Wellington Fenton died in 1942 in Douglas. His name lived on, briefly, in the form of Geoffrey Arthur, who was the youngest of Thomas Fenton's children, born [possibly in] 1885, and died 1947. He was very close to his elder brother Magellan, who named his only child Michael Arthur Fenton.

The older Victor settled in Argentina and married an Argentinian woman as his second wife and they had two children, both of whom were wholly Spanish in their outlook, religion and language. One was a lieutenant in the Argentinian army, while the other was a bank manager. They were possibly called Rodolfo and Alfredo."

Beyond this, I know that Arthur lived in a big white, castellated house overlooking Douglas harbour in the Isle of Man, called Ravenscliff. It's stil there and I believe is owned by the Manx Government now.
If anyone wants to communicate with me directly on this [although I must emphasise that the information above is quoted from a third party - I have no more knowledge], please email me on numbgums at hot mail dot co dot uk.

David

Hello Anna,

I believe Arthur was Doctor to the Provincial Governor before handing over the duty to his brother Victor. But there is a plaque in Punta Arensa which reads “This monument symbolizes the gratitude of the people of Magallanes to the late Dr. Thomas Fenton. Erected to his memory in homage to his fine qualities. Punta Arenas, October 2nd, 1886.” So maybe I have got this a bit wrong.

I too have been told of the painting of Drake and, in my case, Edward Fenton. This would make sense. Edward was captain of the Mary Rose and fought with Drake against the Spanish Armada.

Very exciting, can I ask your relationship to Arthur W?

Kind regards

Jon Fenton.

Arthur Wellington Fenton

Hi - very excited to come across this site and thread.

This is what I know of Arthur Wellington Fenton and Emma Louise McMunn. It is information gathered through family lore so may well be inaccurate, but I thought it fun.

One of Arthur's brothers went out to S America first, and wrote to Arthur giving details of the costs of settling there and encouraging him to come out and make a fortune. Arthur was a very clever man, a doctor. He met Emma Louise McMunn and married her after her husband, a farmer by the name of ?Green died. When he came back to the UK he settled in Salcombe in a house called La Barranca, which he may have built. He also studied law, more as a hobby than with serious intent. The impression I was given was that he was eccentric but charming. He had a pet seagull with one leg, and would greet his grandchildren at breakfast with something like "Ah here come the bog'uns." (I hope that's not rude.) Emma Louise would comment that she went from being an ELM to an ELF.

There is a painting somewhere of Drake and friends, including Geoffrey Fenton, but it's not known where that ended up. It may at one time have been with Victor's older brother ?Hugo, who lived on the Isle of Mann I believe.

One of Victor's nephews went out to farm in Argentina, and there was a Fenton Station on the border of Chile that was sold off in the 70s. I understand that there is still family in South America.

Anyway, take that as you will, it may have been embelleshed over 2 generations with poetic license.

All the best,

Anna

Fenton Family in Virginia - John, Joseph, Benjamin Walker

Hello to all.
I have been working on my Fenton family tree here in VA for a few years. I keep hitting a brick wall and don't know if there is ANYONE else out there doing this same line.
My earliest SOLID lead is John Fenton, who showed up on the tax rolls in James City County, VA, in 1787 on Yarmouth Creek. He had a wife, Elizabeth who inherited in 1798. Their son Joseph F. Fenton (wife Martha A.) was born 1790's and died in 1847. Their three children I know about are Benjamin Walker Fenton (1833) Henry A. (1839), and Elizabeth (1840) who married George Dudley Williams.
There are a number of other Fenton's who show up in York County, VA records in the 1600's - 1800's.
I have been unable to find out where John Fenton came from or any other earlier connections.
Happy hunting to all.

I am looking for siblings and ancestors of Charles who I believe to be my gt-gt grandfather. In 1860 he married Ellen Holme in Prescot, Lancashire and not long after moved back down to London. They had four children to my knowledge as follows:

Charles David 1861-?
William 1862-?
Arthur 1867-?
Emma 1868-?

On the 1881 Census Frederick A is entered as 'Son' aged 1 year, which, if correct, means that Ellen was about 45 when she gave birth.

Charles was father to my gt grandmother Charlotte Altree Fenton born 1866 out of wedlock, her mother being Mary Isabella Altree.

Also, any information about the descendants of Charles will be most welcome.

Arthur Wellington was my Great Grand father, he married Emma McMunn (Greenshields???) He had brothers by the name of Thomas, Ernest Victor and Frederick. I believe that his parents were Michael Fenton Esq of Castletown, Easkey and Jane McLoughry. Michael Fenton died 1873 and Jane McLoughry died 1887.

As I know little about my immediate heritage I would be interested in any information that you have.
Anne

My Fenton's also left Ohio to Chicago and that is where my dad was born. I was able to go to Ohio this summer and I was able to find my mothers' side the Snell, Williams and Manns but no Fenton's. My poor husband and children went to all these cemetaries with me in Morrow county and then outside of Mansfield. I even spent a few days in a few genealogical libraries while my family went to art museums my husband is an art teacher. I did not even find the Fentons in the cemetary logs for Erie County in Ohio. Since they had just come from Northern Ireland I wonder if they buried them back there? Thanks for all your help I'm sure your a cousin from who knows how far back! I'm an RN and have to go to work this morning. Dottie

what a coincidence to see a Fenton marrying a Perry - for me, anyway. I think your Northern Ireland Fentons are very interesting. Although mine came from the South, I have always suspected that the Fentons were not originally Irish, but were part of the Plantation - the settling of English families in Ireland, principally in the North, and very often as servants of English families who took over Irish estates following the defeat of James II at the Boyne.

This may not help, but my g-g-grandfather was James Fenton, b. Co. Tipperary abt 1816. We all thought that he cme from Cork, as the family oral history said, until I found an old census form. However, my great aunt in Wales kept in touch with the Fentons in Cork (especially in Queenstown, now called Cobh) until WW2. I have a lot of information on James' descendants, but not on his antecedents.

This may just confuse things further, but my g-g grandfather James Fenton (b. Co Tipperary Ireland abt 1816) settled in S. Wales not too far from Cardiff, at Llantrissaint. I have often wondered if he was related to the Cardiff Fentons.
Ivor Fenton Perry

Re: Patrick & Mary Ann Fenton in Pittsburgh by 1867

Found some more information and I have a cousin going to visit Pittsburgh for digging soon. Patrick's family group is found in Pittsburgh in 1880 Federal cenus(Fendon). Got his death register stating he died: 30 May 1899 in Pittsburgh and his parents names were John and Mary Fenton and confirmed he was born in Ireland.

Does this help anyone make connections to this Fenton family group or can you help point where I should look for more information on were Patrick Fenton came from in Ireland?
