Marcia, I have a listing of the scotsmen from the ship Unity & where the first 45 men where placed. Around 30 of them were sent to the Lyne Iron Works, 15 men were sent to a sawmill & or sawmills in Kittery, Maine. Your Daniel Ferguson was one of the fifteen men. My main line is Carmichael, but my 3rd. great grandmother was a Ferguson, daughter of Andrew Ferguson, grand daughter of Thomas B. Ferguson. This Ferguson clan was of Scotch-Irish ancestry. e-mail me at
peckdot@hotmail.com
Let me know if you want this list.

I know that Daniel was aboard the Unity and I do have a passenger list (what there is of one). What I am looking to find is where he came from in Scotland. There are links to a William Furbish also aboard the Unity, but I can not confirm that Daniel was from the same locale in Scotland or if he and Furbish just became friendly after being exiled.

York County Maine records also indicate a Gilbert Ferguson who helped take care of Daniel on his deathbed. Gilbert was supposedly a brother but I have found no other reference for him and do not know how he got here.

Thanks for your offer of assistance. Let me know if you come across anything further to connect to Scotland

I am interested in Daniel and Abigail's son, James.

I believe James married Rachel Smith, d/o Deacon Archibald Smith and Mary/Polly Tripp.

Would like to find some verification--something to be sure if this is correct.

Thanks!

I am identified as certainly in the same Ferguson family. But it appears fairly certain that the Fergsons of Leitrim have been there for many, many centuries. At one point Ireland and Scotland joined forces against the English. Could there have been Irish Fergusons joining the battle of Dunbar?

My 8 x g grandfather is also Daniel Ferguson who was taken prisoner by Oliver Cromwell at the battle of Dunbar in 1650.

Daniel Ferguson (1) was put on the ship, The Unity, and sent to the American Colonies to work as an indentured servant for 5 years in Kittery, Maine until he was released.

He married a Mary (last name unknown) and had 7 children, the first boy of whom was Alexander Ferguson (2).

Alexander Ferguson married Elizabeth Gowen. They had 7 children too. The baby child of the 7 was John Ferguson (3).

John Ferguson married Hannah Chase. They also had a John Ferguson (4).

That John Ferguson married Mary Coffin. They had a William Ferguson (5).

William Ferguson married Deborah Luce and they had a John Ferguson (6).

That John Ferguson married Sarah Luce (his first cousin!).

They had a John Howard Ferguson (7) (after whom I am named).

That John Howard Ferguson (Of Plessy v. Ferguson U.S. Supreme Court fame), married Virginia Earhart and they had a Walter Judson Ferguson (8).

Walter Ferguson married Indie Giffney and they had a John Howard Ferguson II (9).

John Howard Ferguson II married Mary Flood and they had one child, my father, John Howard Ferguson III (10) .

I can prove this line with documentation all the way back to the Scot who fought against Oliver Cromwell, Daniel Ferguson.

But that's as far as I have been able to take it.

Any help would be appreicated. Thank you.

John Howard Ferguson IV
