Thanks to everyone who has had a say and to those that may come in the future. If in your own personal family research of your Ferguson line you find that and enumerator misspelled your grandfathers brother family living two door down on the census then you should let the powers that be know of you correction and why as listed on the left side to make changes and for what reason. I have found my great grandfathers brother spelled furgerson and I know thats not correct so I posited my correction and why. Again these are only people who were I am researching and then ancestry.com post the alternate so you as a researcher choose the correct one. Lee Ferguson

Lisa,
the original spelling is left in place, but there are a lot of folks who will look at a correction, and if they are new, assume that the poster knew what they were talking about. I see nothing wrong with pointing out possible transcription errors based upon looking at the handwriting on different lines of the form, or personal knowledge of the family, but deciding that a family name is misspelled on a whim is dangerous for data integrity.

Cliff Fargason

Cliff Fargason wrote:
I must agree with NOT changing records unless you are 100% sure of your information. Fargason is often confused with Ferguson, but Fargason is a sept of Clan Farquharson and the name appears spelled as Fargason in Scotland at the present time. While Fargason is not as common a surname as Ferguson, it does irritate when someone attempts to inform me that I and my ancestors have been spelling our name wrong.

While I appreciate your desire to correct errors, doing so without being sure of what you are changing will likely result in introducing errors in other folks family trees.

----------------------------
I have to agree with the above.... Although the most RECENT spelling (1700's ish) of my family name is FERGUSON, it actually started out as Clan Farquharson and through the years ended up as the spelling now. My mom and I have been doing geneaology research for over 30+ years, (mom and gran even longer) and alot of misspellings can be attributed to the CENSUS taker not understanding the phoenics of the name being written down. Farquaharson's and Ferguson's, etc. lived in the same area, and most census takers just wrote down a spelling (sic).... That is how mom and I find our family is through the various misspellings, because we know they ARE misspelled alot. (as are other names in our family)

Patience is needed when searching records (not trying to sound demeaning in any way to anyone), and misspellings are just a part of geneaology research.

Which brings me to my question on this:
Is the original spelling being left WITH your correction? Or is your correction replacing it??

Cheers,
Lisa Ferguson Cady

These FERGUSON relatives were residing in LaRue-Hardin/Hart Co. KY in 1800's. David Ferguson was a descendent of Scotland. He married Elizabeth Bomar in Halifax Co., Virginia on October 17 or 19, 1803. The only link I have to David Ferguson and Elizabeth Bomar being the parents of my great-great grandfather, James Ferguson is the Hammonsville Long Ago article that was written about one of James' son's, William Colgan Ferguson.

James and his wife, Lucinda Long Ferguson are buried at Three Forks at Bacon Creek Church Cemetery, Hammonsville, KY, as is James' elder sister, Sarah Frances Ferguson Cruse and her husband, Prosser and their daughter, Clarissa.

The elusive David Ferguson and Elizabeth Bomar Ferguson burial sites are beyond any researches on them that I have yet found.

Anyone with any links to these family ties, please respond.

I must agree that the mis-spelling of the name is making it hard to find ancestry. I have been working a short time on my family tree (ten years). I have found at least four mis- spelling, Fergerson, Fergason, Furgason, and Ferguson which is how my great grand parents and grandmother spelt the name. I have had trouble with my surname Alton, or Allton, or Altom, or Aulton, or Halton, Hilton and so on. I don't expect anyone to change the way they spell their name for me but it would make research much easier if the variances were not so many. The hand writen census were hard enough to follow with the writer mis-spelling the names of people whom where not schooled. Added to that the transcribers whom put their two cent worth in ting to read the records and we have already multplied the problem so I said try and fix it.

Re: FERGUSON

First, there was an Donald Ferguson who married an Isabella according to the 1881 Canadian Census. He was Presbyterian and in Novia Scotia. They have a child listed as A. John. He was 1 yr old and listed born in 1880.

Secondly, the above is driving me nuts, as my grandfather was born in NS (Eldon Blaisdell Ferguson) and emigrated to Mass., US. Part of his family came (don't know who), but most went back to Canada. Eldon married Louesa Anginette White. Eldon's parents were Duncan Ferguson (b. 11 Apr 1886) and Henrietta "Nettie" Poole. Duncan's (b. 1886) parents were Duncan Ferguson (b. 1830?) and Katherine MacDonald (b. 1840). All of these were born in Nova Scotia. They come from the Cape Breton, Glace Bay area.

This info was gathered from my father, who knew some of them. I saw Eldon's brother at Eldon's funeral, and he was from NS. He could have been his twin, but wasn't.

SO, the reason that entry is driving me nuts is I can't get past Duncan and Katherine (with any certainty).

If any of this helps, please let me know. And if you can help, I would appreciate it. Good luck.

Hi Stephanie

Sorry, I checked those names in my tree, and came up with nothing. My Ferguson's came from the Chezzetcook area (just outside of Halifax) and I haven't found any connection to Ferguson's from Glace Bay. However my My mom grew up in North Sydney, NS and was a Rose, her mother was a Rogers, and she told me that they did have some relatives over in Glace Bay. So if your tree has any Rose, Rogers, or even Neals. Let me know. There may be a connection.

Also if you have Conrod or Conrad's in your family, they were a well known NS family (more in Halifax, Lunenburg area though).

Lastly, if you have any Buffett's, we have those aswell, they came from Newfoundland, and are direct ancestors to Warren Buffett.

My father ordered a transcription of a marriage certificate from 1873 in Suffolk County MA that listed a Scottish house painter named Andrew Ferguson (son of Alexander Ferguson and Jane) marrying a Mary McNarney. I thought this was my man - the parents, age and occupation all match. However, the death certificate for the both Alexander and Mary who were my great grandparents list Mary's maiden name as Mcintire.

Perhaps there was an error in transcribing one of these documents. I don't know. Can you share any of the information you have?

I must agree with NOT changing records unless you are 100% sure of your information. Fargason is often confused with Ferguson, but Fargason is a sept of Clan Farquharson and the name appears spelled as Fargason in Scotland at the present time. While Fargason is not as common a surname as Ferguson, it does irritate when someone attempts to inform me that I and my ancestors have been spelling our name wrong.

While I appreciate your desire to correct errors, doing so without being sure of what you are changing will likely result in introducing errors in other folks family trees.

Cliff Fargason

And his name was Henry Beecher Ward Ferguson. Married Hazel Ward.... and they had several children: Bobby Gene, Brenda, Harry are the only ones that come to mind. Barbara

Wonder if they are the same.
Our families lived and worked beside each other on the farm for many years. Docks Creek Road, Moore Road, Kenova being the nearest town.

I'm trying to find some info leading to my g-grandmother's parents. Her name was originally Ila Louise Clarke born in Pennsylvania in June 1910. Sometime in 1910 or 1911 in New York state her father, Kenneth Clarke, killed her mother, Pansy (maiden name unknown), and then killed himself. My g-grandmother also had a biological brother; however, I didn't hear what ever happened to him. She ended up being adopted by a family by the last name of Likely. I know that these Likelys ended up in Detroit, Michigan.

Also, my g-grandmother ended up marrying into a Ferguson lot, so her name changed to Ila Louise Ferguson. Both her and her adopted Likely parents ended up being buried in a cemetery around the Detroit area.

If this rings any bells and you have any info that will help me out, please don't hesitate to email me at riley@frozenonthespot.com

MANSFIELD: Donald Ferguson, 94, died Saturday, October 3, 2009, at Crystal Care Center of Mansfield, Ohio after an extended illness.

Donald was born June 3, 1915, in Warsaw, Indiana, to the late Bishop Wayman Ferguson and Viola Skeen- Ferguson. He made Mansfield his home.

He attended Tuskegee University and was the first black to own and operate a shoe repair shop here in Mansfield. He was chosen as The Man of The Year Award, from the City of Mansfield; and a life long member of Mitchell Chapel AME Church; where he served as a steward and song in the choir.
Mary Ferguson Stringer (Ontario, Canada & The United States)

Hello,

I am looking for information on Mary Ferguson born approx. 1878. I'm not sure if she was born in Toronto or possibly somewhere in the United States.

Mary's parents are Thomas Ferguson and Annie, both of Scotland. They may have lived in the U.S. at some point.

Mary married Thomas Stringer. Together they had Alfonso (Albert) Leo Stringer and Marie Grace Stringer. I believe Mary and her husband Thomas lived in the state of Ohio for sometime as well as in Ontario. Rumour has it that Thomas Stringer may have been a polygamist.

Mary died in Hamilton, Wentworth Ontario May 8th, 1922. The only record I have on her is her death certificate.

If you have any information about her or her family, please contact me.
