Ferguson's in NYC

Grandfather was Thomas Ferguson from Newcastle upon Tyne. Immigrated here when he was 28 years old. He married Sarah Williams early 1900's. They had 12 children most of whom died young. Thomas died 1942(?) and Sarah died 1928. My father Francis (Frank) Ferguson was their youngest son and was a long time resident of East 65 st NYC. Any Ferguson/Williams relatives? I know of one cousin, Walter Ferguson living on the lower east side, his father was David, my father's brother. Don't have any info on Walter, or his sister, Eleanor.

Fergusons, St. Lawrence/Monroe Co., New York

Looking for information on and/or descendants of John A. Ferguson (1825-1914) and Jennet Jamison (also spelled Janet Jamison, Jeanett Jameson, Janet Jamerson) (1826-1908) of Ogdensburg or Oswegatchie, St. Lawrence County, New York, and later Charlotte, Monroe County, New York. Believe his parents were Alexander (abt. 1782-1856) and Mary Ferguson (abt. 1785-1876) both born in Scotland and died in Ogdensburg.

Children:

Mary C. Ferguson (born 1850)
Jennet L. Ferguson (born abt. 1852-1853)
Alexander Ferguson (born March 8, 1954)
John C. Ferguson (born abt. 1857)
Charles Archibald Ferguson (January 5, 1859-October 5, 1913)
Agnes Ferguson (born April 1860)
Cora Ella Ferguson (born October 25, 1862)
Daniel Campbell Ferguson (born March 9, 1864)
Margaret Mary Ferguson (born October 27, 1867)
Bertha J. Ferguson (born September 26, 1874)

Charles Archibald Ferguson is my great-grandfather and married Lura Jane Onderdonk (1863-1951) in 1883. Their daughter, Merna Janet Ferguson (1892-1983) was my grandmother and married John Tree Carpenter. Charles and Lura also had a son Lyman Ferguson (1889-1969) and an adopted daughter, Bessie.

Charles' brother, Alexander, moved to Charlotte about 1874 and had a hardware store in Greece. He had at least three sons with his 2nd wife, Emily Allen. Daniel Campbell Ferguson moved to Herkimer County, New York, where he and his wife, Cora Bell Carroll, had about 14 children.

My great-grandparents moved to Michigan and mostly lost contact with the rest of the Fergusons, although Merna remembered some about her first cousins.

I have a copy of an excellent photo of Jennet Jamison Ferguson and all six of her daughters and also photos of Charles Archibald Ferguson and his wife and children. I am looking for any information about anyone in this family or their descendants.

Eric Carlson
This is all so interesting. You have done alot of the work that I was thinking I needed to do. The only piece that doesn't fit is that my dad was always told that his ancestor from Scotland came over at age 14 from Glasgow. Anyway, I can get copies of those gravestones. My parents still live in Rochester- Charlotte is a community in the city of Rochester. My paternal grandfather was Floris Allen. I also know that some of John's children are still living in the Rochester area.

I am actually going to Scotland today!. Is there anything that I should research while there. Where did Alexander live before he migrated.

Marcia

An Appeal to Ferguson African Americans from Texas --Are You Related to this Person?

FERGUSON, THOMAS JEFFERSON (1877-?). Thomas Jefferson Ferguson, black business executive, was born on January 3, 1877, in Richmond, Texas, the son of Sylvia (Johnson) and Henry Clay Ferguson. He was educated at the Gregory Institute in Houston before moving on to Prairie View College (now Prairie View A&M University). During his studies at Gregory Institute from 1890 to 1893 he served as assistant clerk of the District Court in Richmond, Texas. He also attended Columbia University as well as the University of Chicago. On July 21, 1903, he married Gertrude May Scott. From 1907 to 1920 Ferguson was assistant to the treasurer at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, from 1920 to 1927 the treasurer of Standard Life Insurance, and from 1921 to 1926 the director and vice president of the Citizens Trust Company in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the registrar for the National Negro Business League from 1923 at least through 1932 and served as director of the Atlanta Building and Loan Association beginning in 1925. In 1931 he founded Pioneer Savings Association in Atlanta. Ferguson belonged to a number of civic, business, and fraternal organizations including the NAACP, the YMCA, the Masons, the Elks, and Alpha Phi Alpha. He voted as a Republican and was a Methodist.

Do you have a date and place of death and burial for him?
He needs to be honored as one of Texas' first African American Businessmen but what you see is all we know about him? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

FERGUSON JEFFERSON CO OHIO

CHARLES FERGUSON was born on or about 5 Oct 1803, a son of Thomas and Eleanor Ferguson. He had four brothers: John, Robert, Thomas and Samuel. All this information is gathered from a partition action filed by John Ferguson vs. Eleanor Ferguson etal for the partitioning of the lands of Thomas Ferguson, dec'd. The case was heard in Jefferson County Court on 23 Mar 1860.

Charles married Nancy Close (10 May 1800-19 Feb 1891) on 6 Nov 1823 in Jefferson County, Ohio. Nancy was born near Knoxville, Jeff Co. Ohio, a daughter of Joseph and Rachel Close. Charles and Nancy had ten (10) children:

1. William Henry Ferguson (7 Jun 1824-18 Jan 1899) married Mary Jane Myers on 26 Oct 1854.
2. Mary Jane Ferguson (26 Jan 1826-17 Jul 1887) married Charles B. Martin.
3. Rachel Ferguson (12 Jul 1828-18 Dec 1897) married David Risden on 25 Mar 1855.
4. Susan Ferguson (25 Sep 1829-4 Oct 1878) married Nottingham Risden on 26 Oct 1865.
5. Thomas D. Ferguson (22 Mar 1830-4 Nov 1907) married Elizabeth Jne Curfman on 24 Aug 1854.
6. infant Ferguson
7. Joseph Andrew Ferguson (29 Jan 1834-12 May 1907) married Susanna Thompson on 25 Aug 1857.
8. infant Ferguson
9. George Washington Ferguson (11 May 1837-9 Aug 1919) married Alicia S. Webster on 9 Aug 1860.
10. Charles Silas Ferguson (9 Mar 1839-11 Jul 1928) married Eliza Jane Johnson on 3 Jul 1861.

Charles died on or about 6 Oct 1839. He supposedly was murdered crossing a covered bridge in Hammondsville, Ohio for the money he received after selling cattle in Irondale.

After his death Nancy moved from Knox Twp, Jeff Co. Ohio to Steubenville, Ohio, where she died at age 91. She lived mostly with her oldest son William since his wife Mary died very early. Nancy is buried in the Union Cemetery in Steubenville.

My line is through Mary Jane and Charles Martin.

Lance D.

Hi board just hope I can make a new connection with my Ferguson's. My William G. Ferguson married Hannah L. Conn in 1843 in Chester District S.C. and moved to Two Egg Jackson Co. Fl. in 1845 after the birth of John Tyler in Chester in 1844. So If we all know this why is it so hard to find any brothers or sisters or even a Father and Mother of William or Hannah???

If this helps someone find that link that fell of the table in all the stacks we seam to have as we look up info on our family's and help other researchers. Lets keep up the good work this board and other state and county boards do to help.

John Ferguson in New Milford CT

Can anyone tell me more about John Ferguson, who became the guardian for my great-great-great grandfather, Henry Sillivan/Sullivan, in 1811 in New Milford, CT? I cannot find any records for John after that event, but here is what I have found up until that time, all of it occurring in New Milford:
John married Polly Fuller on January 5, 1806. John and Ezra Lacey bought a house in New Milford on December 1, 1806, then sold it six months later. John and Polly had a son, William Henry Ferguson, on February 5, 1807. The 1810 US Census shows John with 2 males and 2 females in the household, still in New Milford. Samuel Orcutt’s The History of New Milford and Bridgewater, Connecticut claims that they lived in what is now the town of Bridgewater (it was part of New Milford before 1856.)

Since my ancestor was 14 at the time of the guardianship, he could have become John’s apprentice. What was John’s occupation?

Thank you for any clues.
Sharon
Appears in "the Wapanucka Press" 4 December 1902, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

A MURDER MYSTERY

Body of a Man Found in His Barn Three Miles From Davis

Davis: At the home of J. L. Ferguson, on the farm of Nick Butterly, three miles west of Davis, a shot was heard at the barn. Mrs. Ferguson and her brother went to the lot and found the dead body of Mr. Ferguson lying in his corn crib. A pistol was in his right hand, both arms folded across his body. Mr. Fergtuson had been away from home a few days, had gone to Wynnewood, left his saddle horse in a stable and had gone by rail to Norman and Oklahoma City returning to Wynnewood, which was the last seen of him alive.

Latest developments point strongly to foul play. Mr. Ferguson’s horse and saddle were still in the livery stable at Wynnewood. His home is eight miles from there. Very heavy rains had fallen and the roads were wet and muddy. His clothing was not wet or muddy. It was later discovered that his head was crushed on the right side, as if done with a heavy instrument and a shot entered near back of the head and lodged in the forehead. The shot has been cut out. His hair was not powder burned. The case is a deep mystery. It is supposed he was killed in Wynnewood, his body hauled home and placed where it could be found, and the pistol, a new one, placed in his hand. An investigation is being made.

plz read my brickwall (Ferguson family )

I've posted many times on this and other forums asking about bits of info to do with Noah Ferguson born jan.22 1873 or 71. I've had a few people help but not as many as I hoped. So I decided I should put all the info that I think may help someone help me. So this is my brickwall and hopefully someone out there has a hint that may break it:

My grandfather is Morton Ferguson (married Ruth Scarberry Ferguson) he was born on Dec.12,1906. His father was Noah Ferguson married to Sylvie Smith. its Noahs parents that I'm stuck on. Heres all I got on Noah .
Noah was born in Wv. on January 22 1873. This information is kinda weird because its written in William Ferguson family bible . I know its my Noah because in it is also written of his marriage to Sylvie on May11 1899. I can back this date up from Lawrence co Ky marrige register. OK... now every census from 1900 and up puts Noah in Ky living beside Joseph Ferguson (John Everald Ferguson son). John E Ferguson is the son of William Ferguson WHO OWNED THE BIBLE. Another thing about this Joseph is that Noah was married at his house and Joseph was mentioned on Noahs marriage register . Around 1910 I think (I dont have that census in front of me now) Joseph and Noah move to Wv. and again are nieghbors... Got it so far ?? 1890 census as you know was ruined in a fire so we have nothing there. 1880 census now here is the fun part...
I cannot (nor anyone else ) find Noah at this time either in Ky or Wv. But from all census and his death cert (I'll get to later) stated he was born in Wv. Get this tho.. only one Noah Ferguson cannot be accounted for and its possible it could be him. There is a Noah Ferguson age 7 living in the household of Aaron and Lucinda Brock . Lucinda's mother is Elizabeth Ferguson Pauley ( William Fergusons sister). BUT WHY WOULD HE BE THERE? WHERE ARE HIS PARENTS??

After much time a digging an experienced Ferguson genealogist from California who is related to all the Fergusons I mentioned found Noahs death cert. and we thought this would bring an end to it but.... The death cert. looks like they rushed thru it or was given little info. It didnt even mention Sylvie by name just Mrs. Ferguson. Says she was the informant. His parents names on it were John Ferguson and Bettie Robison ( Robinson or Robertson) can but barely read her maiden name. Stated his birth in Wv. on January 22 1871 (bible states 73 but if you look close it is old and faded scribbling so could be a 1 instead of 3) Noah died on June 28 1937 . Now on the death cert his parents birthplace was listed unknown. And theres no way to be sure if thier names are correct or if this info even came from Sylvie.

During the time period that I listed Noahs birth a couple of other Noahs were born . One was born to Oceander Ferguson and one was born to Miles Ferguson but both have been ruled out . Thier Noahs are accounted for. I have a copy of probably one of the best Ferguson books ever written Ferguson Family Genealogical History of Wayne co. by Evlelyn Massie but it doesnt solve it. Evelyn Massie has been questioned about it and all she can figure is that a Samuel Ferguson had so many children in his lifetime and most were adopted out or orphaned.
Just because the info may have pointed to Noah being related to John E Ferguson family. This may not be apparent when you take into account that Sylvies mother (Jane Garrett Smith) married John Everald shortly after her husband ( James Washington Smith) died from a wound in the Cival War. The 2 families were nieghbors and Johns wife Sarah died Sept 19 1870 and Janes husband died Jan .23 1864. John and Jane were married Nov. 3, 1870.

So Jane and John each had 6 children of thier own when they married and Sylvie wasnt even born yet. She was born June 19 1873. William Smith (Sylvies father) lived in the household of John E. sometime after and eventually John E. deeded some land to him. I'm assuming it was James Washington Smiths property but I wont know till I get to Lawrence co. Courthouse and do a look -up.

I would think that Sylvie grew up either in or close by John and Janes household and probably would have thought of John Everald as a grandfather. I always felt that maybe Noahs recorded birth in Ferguson bible was done either after they married or a little before
because I really think when it looks like 1873 it accually was written as 73 and I think that who ever wrote it put Sylvies birth year either guessing or just plain not knowing. But thats just assumption and we cant base genealogy on assumption.

My biggest questions are how did Noah come into this picture to marry Sylvie? Was he distantly related to John E. family? Why cant we find any trace of him before 1900 and why does it look like he just floated in from out of the blue? If he was born in Wv. why havent we seen any trace of his parents? At a time when people were having a dozen children and having them even in thier 50s did he have brothers and sisters and why dont we see some trace of them? How can this man live in same area for 66 years and seem not to have some immediate family other than his wife and children?

My biggest problem right now is the fact I'm living in Canada and dont have access to the records I need. I will be coming back to Wayne co. in a couple of months and I'll search every angle I can but I fear that the information just dont exsist any longer because lack of caring died when they died.
William Fergus(s)on

I have a newspaper cutting in my possession which is a burial report for William Fergusson who died in Harrogate but lived and was buried in Barrow-in-Furness. I've never really thought much about it (my name is spelled with only one S), not known who it was, but last week I decided to see if I could follow it up in the censuses. I think I have managed to trace his father, also called William, back to Blairgowrie, Perthshire. I then found his marriage in Hutchestown, Glasgow, to Christina McClelland in 1861. They moved to Kirkdale (Liverpool), Lancashire and then to Barrow (via Perth). William and Christina had three children: Christina b1862 in Glasgow, William b1867 (the one in the newspaper cutting) in Liverpool and James b1864 in Liverpool. Also in the marriage details, I found that his father was John Ferguson and his mother, Jane McNaughton (deceased). Again, this would be the same generation as my great great grandfather and I wonder if it is indeed him.

William the younger was a marine engineer (his father was an engine fitter), and when he died he was working for Barrow Gas & Water Corporation. He had trained under his father. He had a son, (William) Arthur Fergusson, born in Barrow in 1896.

I still haven't established if he is a relation of mine, but there must have been a reason for it being amongst a lot of stuff I inherited from my aunt. William the younger is of the same generation as my Great Grandfather, John Ferguson, born somewhere in Scotland. I'd like to hear if anyone has any connection with these Fergus(s)ons, which could help me break down my brick wall.

FERGUSON/FERGASON - PA, NC, SC, Scotland

Our Ferguson/Fergason direct female line is as follows:

Clarissa Ann Fergason born 9/28/1856 Alabama died 4/21/1906 Parker Co, TX (husband William Jackson Craig)

William R. (Russel) Fergason born 6/8/1825 South Carolina died 10/8/1886 Lawrence Co, AL (wife Sara Jane Harris)

Clement Fergason born 1791 North Carolina died 5/25/1856 Lawrence Co, AL (wife Mary LNU)

Robert Fergason born 1765 North Carolina died 1/1850 Greenville Co, SC (wife Cassander - believed to be full blooded Cherokee)

Until this past week end, Robert Fergason/Ferguson was our brick wall. Based on some new information given to me by a professional genealogist from Nesbo, North Carolina, we now strongly believe the father of our Robert Fergason is:

Andrew Ferguson born about 1724 Scotland died 7/25/1810 Lincoln Co, NC(wife Mary) who was the son of

Robert Ferguson born about 1700 Scotland, died 12/3/1794 Tyrone/Lincoln Co, NC (wife Mary Fitzpatrick) who was the son of

John Ferguson born about 1685 Scotland (wife Margaret Douglas).

I'm hoping that someone on this board may be able to help me confirm this.

thank you,
LuAna Drake Craig
Frank Ferguson

I found this in a book I bought from the year 1886.

Thrown from the car.

Frank Ferguson, aged 28 years a brakeman employed on the Pennsylvania Railroad, passed the Pennypack station shortly before tweleve o'clock last night. He was riding on the top of a freight car and a sudden jolt threw him off the car to the ground. his right arm was torn off close to the shoulder, and the injured man was compelled to lie in a bank of snow until help arrived. He was not missed from his train and at half past two o'clock this morning as incoming passenger trained picked him up and brought him to the city. He was unconscious when found and was taken to one of the hospitals.

Noah and Sylvie Ferguson 1899 maybe a Samuel link?

Im looking for anyone who has info on Noah and Sylvie Smith Ferguson married in Lawrence co Ky 1899. I have a death cert. on Noah stating his parents as John and Bettie (Robinson or Robertson can barely read it) Ferguson. Noah died in 1937 and Sylvie died in 1951. I read somewhere in this forum that someone has a Samuel Ferguson connection in this family and with info i have about Noah cosistantly living beside Joseph Ferguson. Records found by another reseacher helping me have uncovered Noah birh and Noah and Sylvies marriage recorded in family bible of William Ferguson son of John and Margret Mckinney Ferguson. But I cannot find the missing link that ties these families together . Anyone with any info or willing to help with research is greatly appreciated. Noah born jan 22 1873 to John and Bettie Ferguson

We are looking for Donald Ferguson's date of birth. He was born in Comerie. We believe it to be 1799 but are unable to confirm this. Not sure what his parents were called they could be John Ferguson and Cathrine McLaren of Comrie, Perthshire or Peter Ferguson and Cathrine Drummond also of Comrie, Perthshire. I favour John and Cathrine because the name McLaren turns up in Donalds children as a middle name twice. We have found it difficult to pin Donald down. We know he married Elizabeth Hamilton in 1844 in Bathgate West Lothian had a large family and lived in Bathgate all his married life. He lived to a ripe old age. Found him in 1871 census but not in 1881 census. Donald started of as a farm labourer but by the 1871 census he was a farmer of 20 arable acres.

ianandjune136

My grandmother was born in Ururi, Campobasso, Italy. Her surname was Cocco, but her mother's maiden name was Primiani. My grandmother came to the United States in 1911 and lived in New York City. I was told that some of her Primiani cousins came to the United States and resided in Connecticut. I would be most interested in hearing from any Primiani who trace their ancestry back to Ururi, Campobasso, Italy.

Mary Ferguson NYC 1910

I am searching for a Mary Ferguson who lived in Manhattan in 1910. She had a daughter that she had to give up to Guardian Angel Foundling Home on West 68th St.(now part of the NY Foundling). The daughter's name she gave as Anne Lewis and the child was born at home on August 7 1910 and given to the orphanage on August 20 1910. Mary Ferguson gave her address as West 62nd Street.
The name and address could be false. We have no idea of Mary Ferguson age but imagine her to be a young, non-married woman. Mary Ferguson could have married later or remained single (if she was). I have tried the 1910 census to find mnay Mary Fergusons, none of whom match this address although many fit her possible profile.
Anne Lewis's name was changed later when adopted to another family.TIA.

I am working on a comprehensive database of all known descendants of John FARGESON (Ferguson, or Fargisson) and Ann Stubbleson of Essex Co., VA (late 1600-early 1700s) So far I have found over 2500 descendants, 762 of them with the surname FERGUSON. The vast majority are in VA, SC, NC, AL, MS, AR and TN, with a fair sprinkling of LA, TX, WV & OK. A few moved elsewhere, like AK, CA, IN, IL, MO & KS. The only place outside of the US that they have moved (as far as I know) is one group to Brazil after the Civil War. If you are descended from John and Ann, or think you might be, please email me. Thanks. Mary Ferguson Fiser

John Ferguson born 1842 near Liff, Scotland, died ? Ontario, Canada

I am looking for information on my gg-grandfather, John Ferguson. John was born about 1842 near Liff, Scotland. Could have been in Lochee or Edinburgh. He married Isabella Constance Lauder (born 1842 in Liff) around 1861. They had two children, my g-grandfather George (born 11/30/1867) and Agnes (born 11/11/1875) both of whom were born in Scotland. Isabella came from a large family in Lochee. By 1881 John and Isabella were living in Grey, Ontario, Canada. I do not know anything else and would appreciate any information on birth, death, census, cemetery, etc. Thanks again to all of those who have helped me to get this far in my research. When I started out I barely knew my maternal grandfather's name. It really is wonderful to find out where you come from.
Would like to find out where in Indiana my Richard FERGUSON died. He was born in Jefferson Co. KY on 07 Aug 1913, and died possibly in Indiana, in Sept of 1959. Found him listed on the soc sec death index:

RICHARD FERGUSON 07 Aug 1913 Sep 1959 (not specified) (none specified) 312-05-7641 Indiana

This Richard FERGUSON is the son of Richard L. FERGUSON (1889-1971) and Martha ADKINS.

Would like to find burial place and obituary. Any ideas?

Does anyone know of an Indiana death index?

Would soc security be able to give me further information on his last residence? They did not list it on their index.

Thanks for your help and suggestions!

Tami

FRANCES CATHERINE FERGUSON m. ELZA/ELZY DAVENPORT, 1852, GREEN CO., KY

It's been several years since last placing information here. Am looking to make a connection with those having information on ELZA A. DAVENPORT and FRANCES CATHERINE FERGUSON married in GREEN CO., KY. These would be my GGgrandparents and, their daughter, LULA MILDRED (DAVENPORT), who married WILLIAM FRANK LAMAR in Moody, McLennan Co., TX, is my Ggrandmother. I have descendant information to share with relatives or anyone researching these lines. I've been looking for a connection to Elza and Frances for about ten years and just recently found information posted on the message boards, Rootsweb, and Geneology.com sites and it's peaked my interest and need to find out more about them.

I had the names of Elza/Elzy and Frances Catherine on a death certificate, funeral home records, newspaper obits, and on family lists written by family members. The only other piece of information I had for them was that they came from "Kentucky". That's all I had to go on to begin my search for these two. I have contacted another researcher and have come to the conclusion that this is a part of my family and would like to gain and share information.

Elza and Frances's daughter Lula Mildred, and son in law William Frank Lamar were married in Moody, TX. in 1886, raised the first five of nine children there, and moved to Abilene, Taylor Co., TX sometime after the census was taken in 1900. They were on the 1910 and 1920 census in Taylor County, TX. along with the last four of their children. William's obit states that they lived in Abilene for 28 years and he died in 1928 from burns he received when an oil heater exploded at a tourist camp (motel) he was staying at on the edge of town . Lula died of cancer in 1917 in Abilene, TX. Both Lula and William Frank are buried in the old city cemetary and I have located both of their gravesites.

I would appreciate any information on Elza and Frances Catherine or their ancestors so I can push my family lines a little further back in time. I can be contacted at my email address: dlamar1@suddenlink.net

Thanks for reading the post,
Dave Lamar
