Hi Jillian,

Since my last communication to you in SEP 2006, I have researched this particular Fermanich family. Originally, I indicated that the progenitor of this family was BOELIB Fermanich. His correct name was PAUL Fermanich. He was born 30 JUNE 1811 in Prussia and died 10 DEC 1897 in the Town of Hortonia, Waupaca County, WI. He is buried in a cemetery in the Hortonia (Hortonville, WI) area. Unknown when his wife Maria died. You will be able to find him in the 1860 US Census, in the Town of Matteson, Shawano County, WI, Post Office Embarrass, under PAUL Firmanich. In that census, it indicates that daughter Catherine was born ca 1848 in WI, but I believe that is incorrect. Email me directly at wmys@new.rr.com as I am able to provide additional information on your Fermanich family, and probably for all others researching this Fermanich family

Ernest Luniak had a brother named Joseph - After leaving Darboy - Joseph settled in Navareno with his wife Anna Knoble - They had 15 children I believe. One of Joseph's grandchildren married a Fermanich from the Antigo area. I will look further into how the exact connection is - but it will take me a little time. Can you send me your e-mail address? Mine is ggraf13821@aol.com -- I went to school with Rosie Luniak/Hermus and I know some of the family including Ethyl. Hope to hear from you soon - Vikki

Leo, my grandfather was John Bernard (Bernhardt) & Wihelmina's son.
We live in Duluth, MN. where Leo and his wife Amy Keene Fermenich lived, died and are buried. They met, married & had their children in the Mankato, MN. area.
We have so much to talk about. My brother Leon Fermenick will also be e-mailing you.
I would love to know where & when Bernard & Mina were married. Did they meet in New York? I have so many questions regarding these elusive people.
My name is Royleen Newman (after my father, LeRoy Kendall Fermenick.

I am SO GLAD that I saw your posting! Your great-grandfather was a brother to my husband's great-grandmother (Elisabeth (Firmenich) Griepentrog)! Bernard (aka John Bernard) married Christina Wilhelmina Diedrich (aka Mina), of which I have their marriage certificate! Your great-grandfather did indeed reside in Morrison until after he returned from the Civil War (I also have his Civil War papers) and then moved to Minnesota where they had their children and he died. Would love to hear from you! I have done extensive research on our Griepentrog line (Elisabeth's descendants) and have been also dabbling in the Firmenich line trying to pull together information! So many different spellings of Firmenich!

Hi Mary! I verified the names I have of Joseph and Caroline's 8 children:
Joseph Paul b 13 Sep 1882 (this poss. from death cert? census says 1881 which fits with John's age)
John T b 8 Sep 1882
Agnes b Nov 1887
Katrina b Oct 1884
William A b May 1889
Benjamin A b 17 Nov 1892
Theresa (birth certificate read Caroline) this one you had the info on...
one other who died as a child or infant

These names and dates came from censuses (censi?) =) though I am pretty sure I got exact dates on Joseph and John from death certificates. I am going to look at them again next time I get into WI Vital Records.
We have some Fermanich pictures; I'll have to pull them out to review to see. I think what pictures we have will be of the Christian and Susan [Long] Fermanich family, Christian being one of the sons of Boelib who immigrated. We will be going to the Immigration Center in Green Bay, WI to check out naturalization papers, etc. Might also provide further information.

Regards,
Mary

I'll get back to you after I check out the info provided.

ahhhh, this makes sense. I was thrown because the Joseph on the LDS site (son of Christian and Susan) was listed as having a wife Martha. I assumed this was Martha Born.

I can add a few things to your information:
Caroline Nesins' parents were named Carolina and Mathias Nesins, living in Milwaukee. She had a brother also names Mathias.

The Joseph Fermanick who died in 1947 was Joseph and Caroline's son Joseph-- born 13 Sep 1882 and died 10 Feb 1947. His wife Martha Born died 4 Jan 1975. Her parents were William Ferdinand Born and Amelia Tietz.

I had more children listed for Joseph and Caroline, but looking at the dates I am suspicious that I have some that don't belong. I had found these before I started keeping careful notes of my sources. I'll try to double-check them and let you know what I find.

Where did you find the info on Boelib and Mary? And Boelib? What a crazy name! I'm so excited to have this new info!

My grandmother was Janet (Jeannette) Fermanick, daughter of Leo who was Joseph and Martha's son. Do you have any pictures of Fermanicks? I have a picture of a family group that was my grandmother's but it is not captioned. I suspect they could be her Fermanick relatives. If you want to take a crack at it, let me know! Thanks!!

Jillian

Hi Jillian,

I believe that is the wrong Joseph Fermanich you looked at at the LDS site. That Joseph Fermanich was indeed the son of Christian and Susan.

Your Joseph Fermanich's father was Boelib and Mary [Maria/Mariah], Fermanich, both born in Germany, who resided in Hortonia, Outagamie County, Wisconsin. They had a son Joseph, who is a brother to Christian. This Joseph was born in Wisconsin, about 1855, and married Caroline Nesins. They appear in the 1910 Census, Langlade County, Wisconsin, and Joseph is 54, Caroline [Carrie], is 50, and also listed are sons, Willard, age 20, living at home, and Ben, son, age 17, living at home. Their son, Joseph, was born +- 1883, in Pella, Shawano County, WI. He married Martha Born, born 6/6/2885, in Pella, Shawano County, Wi. She is buried in a Catholic Cemetery in Antigo, WI. Her father was William Ferdinand Born and Mrs. William Ferdinand Born.
This Joseph Fermanich also had a sister, Theresa Fermanich, born 1897 and died in 1901.

The brothers and sisters of Joseph Fermanich, son of Boelib and Mary Fermanich are:
Christian, born 8/9/1835 in Prussia;
Agnes Fermanich;
Shipomius Fermanich, born 1838 in Prussia;
Jacob Fermanich, born 1841 in Prussia;
Catherine Fermanich, born 1848 in WI;
Feroneca Fermanich, born 1852 in WI; and
Joseph Fermanich, born 1855 in WI.
Joseph died in 1947?

According to the 1900 Census, Maple Grove Township, Outagamie County, WI, Christian Fermanich is 64, says he was born Nov./1835, in Germany; census records indicate he immigrated to the US in 1847; says he was in US for 53 years in 1900, and married to Susan for 37 years; Susan, his wife, is 58, immigrated in 1856, 44 years in US. I have no way of knowing if the entire Boelib Fermanich family immigrated at the same time.

Hope this helps. My husband is the grandson of Katherine Fermanich, one of the daughters of Christian and Susan Fermanich, born June 2, 1883, in Mukwa, Waupaca, Wisconsin.

Mary
Thanks Ms. Mys! I did check out the LDS website, but I am unsure of where this info came from. My ancestor Joseph Fermanich appears in there as the son of Christian and Susan Long and husband of Martha (sounds like my Joseph), but the year of birth is 7 years off-- I got my date from his death certificate. Thanks for the cemetery link though! That gives me a new path to explore!

Jillian

Hi Michelle! Wow, thanks so much for the info! I had hit a dead end. I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner, my old email must have been full. Do you happen to know if the Fermanichs were Protestant or Catholic? I drive by a cemetery in Hortonia on my way to my friend's house in New London and I always toy with the idea of looking for Fermanicks there. It is a Catholic cemetery. Where do you live? I live in Madison but my family is in the Appleton area-- I think I am cemetery hunting next time I am back home. =) Do you have any other info on the Nisius (I had Nesins as the spelling) family? I have Caroline's parents as Mathias b. ca 1825 in Prussia and Caroline (don't know maiden name) b. ca 1820 in Baden. They lived in Milwaukee. Caroline Nesins Fermanick had a brother Mathias and a sister Mary. Hope I had some info to compensate for everything you gave me!
Jillian

Boelib and Mariah [Mary[ Fermanich were the first generation of the family you are looking up. They had more children than you listed. No cemetery records available for them. There are cemetery records available for their son, Christian Fermanick, born in Germany, who married Susan Long; one of their children was Paul. Go the Waupaca County website on this site, and you will find cemetery listings for Most Precious Blood cemetery with the listings for some of this Fermanich family; also go the the Latter Day Saints site, and put in the name Fermanich.
M.
Hi Jillian Yes this would be the same family. My records show Joseph Fermanich 1883-1947 m. Martha Born. They had at least 2 children Leo and Caroline. Do you have information on Joseph's parents?

I'm hoping that this could be a connection with my family. My great grandfather was born in Germany (Prussia) & migrated to Morrison, WI.
He fought in the Civil War. His name was Bernardt (Bernard) Firmenich. His wife's name was Wihelmina. She went by "Mina". My grandfather was Leo Fredrick Fermenich, he was born in Madelia, Watonwan, MN. His sister's name was Louise. Does any of this fit with your family?

Hello Jillian,
I'm researching my ancestors. My Grandfather was Paul Fermanich from Antigo, his father was John Fermanich who was married to Ida Sturm. His brother was Joseph who was married to Martha Born. His father was Joseph fermanich who was married to Caroline Nisius. They are buried in the Antigo Cemetery. This is where I get a little sketchy. I believe their father was Boelib Fermanich who was born in 1811 in Prussia. His wife's name was Mary (no last name) and they lived in Hortonia when they came to the U.S. He died in 1897. They're children were Christian b. 1835 Prussia, Stephen b. 1838 Prussia, Catherine b. 1848 Wis., Joseph b. 1854 Wis., and feronica b. 1852 Wis. They must have immigrated here between 1838 and 1848 because of the children's birth places. I'm looking for more information from Germany and where Boelib (Paul ?) is buried. I would guess somewhere around Hortonia which is now Hortonville.
Thanks,
Michelle Mercado

Fermanich Germany to WI

I am seeking information on Joseph Fermanich b.1854 in Germany. He married Caroline Nisius b.1860 and had the following children: Joseph, John, Catherine, Agnes, Benedect, Theresa, and William. I'm not sure when they immigrated to WI, but at least a few children were born there. Joseph may be related to a Paul Fermanich who purchased land about the same time and area in WI. Any information is appreciated!

Hi Beth! I think I might be looking for your family. Do you happen to know if the younger Joseph married a Martha Born and had a son Leo in 1904? Leo is my grandmother's (Janet Fermanick's) father. My grandmother's family is also from the Antigo area.
