Re: Inheritence trouble

For a start you need to give a lot more information, like what city, county, state was your father born in and when, where was your mother born and what is her maiden name. You said your grandfather was adopted. Do you know where? Where did he grow up? Who did he marry? Did he have any other children besides your father. Maybe one or your aunts or uncles on your father's side knows about the adoption. When starting genealogical research the best place to start is with the immediate family.

Fern family in Iowa--Minnie, John, Reverend

This is not my family, so I know nothing about it. I visited an antique store this weekend and saw a nice collection of maybe 2 or 3 dozen old post cards, seemingly a collection of a Minnie Fern, who evidently lived at 1426 Cleveland Ave, Burlington IA in 1912. Other names mentioned: Mrs John Fern (mother of Minnie?) of Ottumwa Ia, a Reverend Fern of Muscatine IA, a George and Myrle(?) possibly of California. The post cards seem to come from Minnie's travels, mostly around Iowa and Illinois, but also wider. The store had them ridiculously overpriced at $2 each, and that was on sale(!), but maybe a family member could work a deal. I'm not connected with the store though, so I couldn't say for sure. The name of the store is Etienne in Evanston IL (847) 475-2300.
This is not intended as a commercial message, as I have nothing to do with the store. I just hate to see things like this get separated from their families. I did buy one of the cards though, and will be glad to donate it to an interested, proven relative.

Seeking info. about the ancestors and descendants of William Fern and his wife Mary Ann Walsh. Their son, John Fern, was my gr-grandfather, b abt 1845, Belfast, Ire., d 1909 in Boston. He mar Hannah Neilson, dau of Andrew Neilson and Janet Lachlan, on 17 Oct 1867 in Kilbirnie, Ayr, Scotland. They emigrated to New York in 1869 and settled in Boston, MA, shortly after. Their ch were: John who dy, James Alexander, William Joseph, Andrew, John, Joseph, Philip who dy, Thomas, and Hannah Elizabeth, my grandmother. On John and Hannah's mar certificate, William is listed as a police constable, deceased. I haven't been able to find William and Mary Ann in any other records. I wonder if they had other ch who have living relatives in Great Britain or the US. Please respond to my email address.

Fearn/Fern from England>Ireland>Iowa>Wisc 1750 to 1900

I'm trying to research my father's side of the family. Benjamin Fearn/Fern, born Ireland, Aug 1827, was my ggf. He is shown living in Dubuque, IA in the 1850 census.

Records indicate his parents were both born in England. I was given information that the 1850 records show a Mary Fern, then 50, and Benjamin, then 23. I'm guessing Mary was his mother.

I also find a Robert Fearn, b 1789 England, d 12 Apr 1842, Dubuque, IA, with Mary Osborne, b abt. 1800, as his spouse, married 23 Sep 1822, England. There's a possibility that Fearn was changed to Fern, and that this Robert/Mary reference is Benjamin's parents.

Going back further, a Samuel Fearn, born abt 1756, in London, England, marries a Jane?, born abt 1760, London, England. They have 8 children, one of which is a Robert Fearn, born 08 Jan 1789, London, England. This is a possible match for Robert's parents.

John Fearn, born abt 1824, England, is Benjamin's older brother. The 1880 census shows a John Fern, age 53, apparently widowed, living in Hazel Green, Grant, WI, born Eng., both parents born Eng., with 7 children, 1 a grand child, ages 22 to 14, all born in Iowa. I'm guessing this to be a possible match, and that John Fern moved from Iowa to Wisconsin after 1860. The Fern children, from oldest to youngest were William, Ellen, Lilly, Frank, Charles, Robert, and grand son, Leo.

Would like to contact anyone who can provide information in tracing the Fearn/Fern line back to England as well as hearing from living relatives.

Am wondering if this line of Ferns is connected to my (Anna) Margaret Fern born abt. 1823. She married John Heffner and they settled in the Sligo area, Clarion Co. Pa. Supposedly they both were born in Germany and came over in the 1840's. They had my 3rd great grandmother, Mary Ann Heffner. They are listed in the 1860 Piney Twp., Clarion Co. census. Also ran across a record of a Anna Mary Fern who married a George John Vogle and lived in the Sligo area. Does this sound like it is connected to you at all?

I am only at the very beginning of my search, but am looking for any information related to William Fern, b. around 1887 in Pennsylvania. The 1920 and 1930 census show him and his wife Anna (Foster) living in Scranton, PA. with their children Foster, Florence (my grandmother), Myrtle, and Esther. This is as far as my knowledge of them goes. My guess would be that we are from the English line of Ferns, if you hae any info, it would be wonderful! Thank you!

Jim Fern, son of William J. & Cynthia (Lowe) Fern, married my Great Grandmother's sister, Jenny Lou Ward. While researching the Wards, I've found that Jim & Jenny's daughter Sarah Virginia and son James are still living. The obituary for William Paul Fern indicates Virginia is living in Richmond. I now live in Richmond and would love to speak with her. There is no Virginia Green listed in the phone book, so I'm hoping you may be able to help. My parents still live in Abingdon and I was just there at Thanksgiving and took pictures of Jim & Jenny's grave markers at Knollkregg. I remember seeing a marker for an Andrew Fern at Knollkregg and snapped a picture of it as well. My Great Grandmother is Laura Novella Ward and she married Ace Nickels. Laura is also buried at Knollkregg, but my Great Grandfather Ace, along with two of their children and at least four of their grandchildren, are buried at Mt. View Cemetery. Ace is in an unmarked grave amongst them, which I only know because Ace & Laura have one child, age 92, still living. I have a listing of the graves at Mt. View Cemetery in the book HIGH ON A WINDY HILL. If you would like for me to mail a copy to you I can certainly do so. It covers graves through the mid-1960s I think. I very much look forward to hearing from you!

Kim Brannon Bowman
Richmond, VA
kbb65@aol.com
