Hi there!

I am a descendant of John Fernie born in 1764 in Cupar, Fife, Scotland. I'm not sure if your John is connected to me but I did find some information on Ancestry, which you may have found already.

1881 Census
John Fernie, born abt 1843, Scotland, living at 10 Chenies Place, St Pancras, London. Occupation: Blacksmith.
Kate Fernie (wife), born abt 1843, Scotland.
Kate Fernie (daughter), born abt 1873, St Pancras, Middlesex, England. Occupation: Scholar
James Fernie (son), born abt 1875, St Pancras, Middlesex, England. Occupation: Scholar.
Annie Fernie (daughter), born abt 1876, St Pancras, Middlesex, England. Occupation: Scholar.
Emily Fernie (daughter), born abt 1879, St Pancras, Middlex, England.
Sarah Taylor - Widower (visitor), born abt 1801, Weymouth, Dorset, England.

Unfortunately I was not able to access the other census records but it looks like John and Kate were in London from the 1871 census.
Found a death which I think is for John - 1918, Wandsworth, Greater London, London, Surrey.

On Family Search I found your the following:
James Norman Fernie, born 20 May 1874. Christening: 28 June 1874, Old Church, Saint Pancras, London. (Kate was short for Catherine.)
Kate Fernie, born 5 June 1872. Christening: 7 July 1872, Old Church, Saint Pancras, London.

You've probably found all this information by now, but if not, I hope it will be useful.

Happy hunting,
Sue
Fernie Family Research

Could anyone help me out at all with my Fernie research?

This is what I know:

My grandad's name was Roy Fernie, born in Central Queensland (Australia) in 1925.

His father was James Bennett Fernie (1885-1968) and Roy's mother was Janet Jessie Edmonstone (1887-1970)

James Bennett Fernie's parents were David Fernie (?-?) and Mary Bennett Paterson (?-1894). They gave birth to James on the boat on the way over to Australia from Scotland. David was a warf worker and Mary was a singer.

I dont have any information on David's parents but I know that Mary's parents were William Bennett Paterson and Jane Robertson.

Any help or advice on how I could find out more would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Amanda (mandapanda00004@hotmail.com)
Elwyn
4 years after your post !- I've just started digging into my great grandmother's family tree (the Fernies) and am lucky enough to have a tree prepared around 100 years ago which features the members of the family you mention together with 5 preceding generations. For the people you mention it gives dates of birth and lists some other brothers and sisters but doesn't give details of marriages or subsequent offspring.

William James would be my gt gt gt gt uncle. What is your relationship? Email me at jrbracken@tiscali.co.uk if you are still looking.

Hi James,

I've just found a Fernie in my family. Isabella Methven has her parents listed on her death certificate as ? Fernie & John Methven. From IGI I found their marriage in St Andrews in 1806 listing the mother as Euphen Fernie. Have you come across this lady anywhere in your research?

Regards,

Merle
