Hello! I stumbled across your letter looking for David :) I am also working on the family tree, and am very interested in obtaining a copy of the tidbits of information you show below, if you wouldn't mind. I am currently putting together a family tree for all of the branches that I have found so far - Simon Peter Fewins is my great-grandfather; my grandfather's name was Wilmer Simon Fewins and my father's name is Roger Wilmer Fewins. David and I conversed several years ago about the family that actually migrated to the US, I have a lot of his notes as well as mine if you are interested :) I have started an online family tree, and can send you a link if you are interested. Please email me at mandy_m_r@yahoo.com if you are interested, and I will send you a copy of all that I have. Thank you for the post!
Mandy Fewins Ryan

Re: Thomas Sarah (Hunt) Fewins

David: I believe Thomas Jefferson Fewins was my great-grandfather, too. I ran across some info just this week while trying to piece together the Fewins family tree.

Simon Thomas Fewins came to the U. S. with a daughter Charlotte and three brothers. In June of 1855, Thomas married Srah Hunt. They lived in Burlington, IA, where he was a blacksmith. There were four children born to this union....Thomas Jefferson, Simon Peter, George William and Ann Maud. Simon Thomas died in 1865, where upon Charlotte returned to relatives in Illinois and Sarah farmed the remaining children out. Thomas was raised by a family in western IA, around Woodbine. Simon by a man named Old Pat, George by some people named Dawner (whom adopted him). Anne Maud was adopted by a family named Stewart. It is unknown why Sarah farmed out the childred, as she lived for several years after the death of her husband. The oldest boys, while treated for the most part good, received little if any affection.

Simon Peter married Effie Jane Rudd and they had seven children. Thomas Franklin was the oldest. He married Ethel Sprague and they had three children. Beatrice I. Ferleman was the oldest. She married Victor Ferleman and they had nine children.

I found the above info in a letter to my mother, Marion Fewins, written by Bea Ferleman in 1985. There is more in the letter, but it was pretty lengthy. I would gladly send you a copy of it and another that she sent if you would like. One letter said that Thomas Jefferson's children were as follows:

Harry Melvin - born Oct. 6, 1888 - died March 18, 1956
Rose Elsie - born March 1, 1870
Chester H. - born August 25, 1892
Charles Emerson - born May 8, 1894
Nellie Blanch - born October 5, 1898
Floyd Lester - born July 26, 1901
Un-named infant - born October 13, 1896
Un-named infant - born April 26, 1900

Harry Melvin was my grandfather. My father was Bert A. Fewins.

Let me know if any of this helps you. Like I said, I'll send you copies of the letters if you wish. There is more info in them that might be interesting to you.

Sincerely,

Judith Fewins Mitchem
William R. Fewins

I am searching for the parents of William R. Fewins born approximately 1862 in Illinois, died 1946 Allen Co. Kansas. He married Florence Louise Griffin (b. 1871 New York) in Allen Co. Kansas 2/9/1888. Their son Floyd A. Fewins was my great-grandfather. I have been trying to determine if he belongs to the Fewins family that lived in the Des Moines area during this time. The area of Illinois his descendants are from is adjacent to the Des Moines area, although, I have been unable to locate his exact place of birth. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Tom, My grandmother was born Clara Etta Fewins, Nov. 13, 1889 in Woodbine,Harrison County,Iowa. She married my grandfather, Milton Ross Doidge, Jan. 12,1909. Her parents were: Simon Peter Fewins b.Dec.10,1858 in Burlington,Des Moines County, Iowa. He married Effie Jane Rudd Oct. 3,1886 in Dow City,Crawford County,Iowa. Simon's parents were: Thomas Fewins b.Jul.29,1801,England(my records said he was from Isle Of Man, but I couldn't verify this. There were Fewins who came from Devonshire,England. That's where my name Doidge came from.) He married Elizabeth Hunt in Burlington,Des Moines County,Iowa Jun.8,1855. Any other questions please contact me. Jim Doidge

Thomas Fewins and wife Charlotte are listed in the Channel Islands 1841 census: Jersey 1841 census St. Peter's; Folio 5, Page 3.Thomas Fewins 40 Blk Sm E; Charlotte Fewins 40 E. The "E" means they were from England. Thanks to David Fewins for finding this and pointing it out to me. If any of you out there are researching Fewins, maybe we can take it back futher now that we have another connection. Their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth was born Feb.24,1848, apparently on Jersey Island. That would have put her mother at 48, if these are correct figures. Did she die from giving child birth? What happed to Charlotte? We know that Thomas and his daughter Charlotte Elizabeth, end up going to the U.S. and eventually settling in Burlington, Iowa. Thomas remaried to Sarah Hunt, June 8, 1855 in Burlington, Des Moines county, Iowa.
