I am interested in the three Feyereisen families from Luxembourg. I am a Feyereisen/Gehlen - both families are from Kehlen, Luxembourg.

I do not have any information about my great grandfather Petter Feyereisen, Jr. or his father, Petter Feyereisen Sr.

If you are familiar with any of these Luxembourgers - please let me kow! I would be most appreciative!
Elizabeth Gehlen

Hi Methuria50,

Here is another piece of information that may be significant in your interest of John Feyereisen of Gregory, S.D. My G grandmother Helena (Feyereisen) Heinz died in 1915 at Greene, Iowa. She was John’s, younger sister. Her obituary said that her brother John, who came to the funeral, was from Rosebud, S.D.

The John Pierre Feyereisen that lived in Blackhawk County Iowa for the 1915 and 1920 census was John’s nephew. His father was Mathias who also came to Greene, Iowa and had a large family. Some of Mathias children were born in Keispelt, Lux and some in Greene, Iowa.

John P Feyereisen was a merchant at the Blacks, Dept store in Waterloo, Iowa. Then apparently, he was a merchant in Perham, Otter Tail, Mn. where he lived till death. Interesting is the selection of a merchant profession as his uncle, another Keispelt, Lux. immigrant, Henry Feyereisen of Greene, was a proprietor of a dry goods store at Greene.

I had previously researched the name Feyereisen and find that it literally could mean a “merchant of iron”. The first part of the name “feyer” is derived from the German.

German “feier” translates to English “celebration”. In the Midwest of the USA, there are “fairs” where locals gather and “celebrate” their wares by doing trading, etc. Perhaps those who work with iron would sell their goods at a “feier”.

The word “feier” appears to derive from the Medieval Latin “feria”, weekday, fair, from Late Latin, festal day, from Latin feriae (plural) holidays — more at FEAST
Date: 13th century

There is more information in the dictionary on the English word “fair”.

I find that the English word “fire” translates to German “feuer”. Therefore, I do not think that is the primary meaning of feier/celebration. The Druids did light bonfires to “celebrate” the Harvest, etc. But the iron part of the name (eisen) does not connect directly. Perhaps the blacksmith profession of making pots and pans is a possible meaning of “feiereisen”.

Roger Mott
Waterloo, Iowa
Thanks for the “difficult to find” census record on John “Fireisen”. I reviewed it and it seems to be the same John Feyereisen that was in the 1880 Floyd County Iowa Federal census. Since my last post in Mar 2006 on this family, I found the death registration of his wife Mary Jane (Henek) at the Floyd County, Iowa courthouse. Mary Jane died 27 Mar 1882 at the age of 26 years, 11 mo. She was listed as from Germany.

The whereabouts of John and his two sons has been unknown to me till they showed up in the 1910 census in Gregory, S.D. Your information on the 1900 Federal census closed the unknown years by at least 10. According to the 1895 SD territory census, John and sons were not in the Charles Mix area so his whereabouts from 1882 to 1900 is still unknown.

Roger Mott
Waterloo, Iowa

Hi Lucien
I greatly appreciate you responding to my posting.I would be very interested in any information or help you could provide on The Feyereisen/Feyersien/Feiereisen Surnames. I realize after researching The Wiscour surname that there are many variations on the surname name. My e-mail address is rwiscour@charter.net .The information on my grand mother Catherine is very slim.I know she was born in Luxemburg 26 March 1869. She emigrated around 1888 to the USA. I know that her fathers name was Peter and she had two brothers John J. and Nicolas. I have no ideal of the name of her mother. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I thank you in advance for your help and I look forward to hearing from you.
R/S Bob Wiscour

Hi Barbara

I am related to the Greene, Butler County Iowa Feyereisens. I have traced them back to Luxembourg and I believe the Gregory S.D. Feyereisens are related. My G Grandmother was Helena Feyereisen who died in 1915 in Greene. Her obituary listed a brother named John of Rosebud, S.D who came to the funeral.

This branch of Feyereisens came from Kehlen and Goetzingen Luxembourg. If these are your relatives, then we have a lot of information to share. I do not have anything after 1920 on John.

5. JOHN3 FEYEREISEN (NICHOLAS2, JOHANNES1) was born 24 Aug 1841 in Keispelt, Luxembourg34, and died Aft. 1920. He married MARY JANE HENEK 28 Apr 1874 in Flood Creek, Floyd County, IA35. She was born Abt. 1857 in New York, NY36, and died Bef. 1910.

Notes for JOHN FEYEREISEN:
1864 immigration apparently was on the same ship as his brother Henry and John Nixt and wife and mother. Passenger list surname was Feireissen.

1879 marriage, based upon the 1880 census data the marriage year listed on the "Early marriages of Floyd County" is in doubt but has been corrected.

1880 Census, Pleasant Grove, Floyd, Iowa, 1 June 1880, ED 215, page 6; John Feyereisen (40), Jane (23), Henry (4), Matie (2), John born in Luxemberg, Jane in New York, her parents in Mecklenburg.

1900 Census, (many of the Dixon Twp census pages are impossible to read, so he may or may not be there). Can't find him in Iowa either.

1910 Census, John (60?) is living with son Henry in Dixon Twp, Gregory, South Dakota.

1920 Census, John (79) is living with son Henry in Dixon Twp, Gregory, South Dakota.

More About JOHN FEYEREISEN:
Immigration: 01 May 1864, NY on Johann from Antwerp
Residence: 1915, Rosebud, SD

Children of JOHN FEYEREISEN and MARY HENEK are:
13.	i.	HENRY J.4 FEYEREISEN, b. Abt. 1876, Pleasant Grove Twp, Floyd, IA.
14.	ii.	MATTHEW FEYEREISEN, b. Unfortunately, my husband's aunt does not have email, so I have to get in touch with her or her son via snail mail, which I am going to do immediately. Now that I look at this, I think her father's name was Henry instead of John. Hope to have more for you soon. There were 6 children in this family, Louise Kuil, Bernice Winter-still living in Gregory SD, Donna Palmer, Virgil, Vincent and William. Their mother's name was Elvira Anderson Feyereisen (lived in Burke, SD-also in Gregory County) Thank you so very much, will let you know as soon as I have more. Barbara Kuil

The name does mean fire iron and we have come to that conclusion also. On the listing of the Feyereisen there were a lot of them with the first names of John, Henry, Matthew etc. There is also a family that was in Iowa that I traced back to Luxemborg re the Morman church listing and also found them in Chanhaussen, MN because of looking at census records. This is really fascinating! Will keep you posted of any additional info I get!

Thank you, Lavonne, for the response. Like you say, it doesn't sound like the 2 families are related except farther back in Luxemburg. The remaining sister, Bernice; is 95 years old and lives very far away from me. I do remember her saying at one time that her grandfather's name was also John. I don't recall the name Peter ever being mentioned. She also said one time that the name means Fire iron, so she thought maybe they had been blacksmith's.

Barbara, me again. Would that sister have any further info. Henry mentioned a brother Matthew (which I have found and long ago deceased) and a brother John and/or Peter. Henry died in 1957 at age 93. I just got tidbits of info from him and since I wasn't necessarily interested in geneology at that time I didn't write anything down. So all I know is from memory and some slim searching info.

I understand there were 3 branches of Feyereisen from Luxemborg and that "they were not related". I am sure far back some place they were as the name is so unusual. I have found that my grandfather, Henry, had his father, Peter, living with them. Peter died in Welcome MN. None of my father's siblings ever talked about Peter so it was a total surprise when I found an obituary by accident from "the Welcome News" in 1905 listing Peter as living with Henry. Never had an inkling that he immigrated here. Other info confirmed that this was indeed my great-grandfather. Henry had a brother, Matthew, who lived in So. St. Paul. Matthew's kids told us at Henry's funeral that there were several relatives living in Wis. I haven't had a chance to trace that info.

I think that your mother may not have been related directly to us. When I searched on Feyereisen, through the Mormon church records, I found several Feyereisen's both in the US and in Luxemborg. You may want to search that website if you are interested in pursuing your family.

Thanks for your reply!

don't know if this has any connection or not--my mother-in-law was a Feyereisen from South Dakota. Her father's name was John and he had a brother Matthew (Mat). They lived in Gregory County, SD. Small town called Iona. She and most of her siblings are gone so no one left to ask about birth places or dates. The one sister still living said her grandparents came from Luxemborg.

Hi Bev
Thank you for your quick response. I have been communicating with a man in Luxembourg and in one of his e-mails he mentioned that he believes Antoine Wiscour's wife's name was (his spelling) Fei(y)eresien. He is doing research for a book he is writing on families that immigrated from certain towns in Luxembourg. The only information I have is that Catherine Feyersien married Antoine Wiscour (date & loc Unk). She was born March 26,1868 (Loc Unk), she died January 1, 1946 in Chicago Ill.and is buried at Montrose Cemetary. Her father was Peter Feyersien. I noted that the way I have the name spelled leaves out an E. I would not be suprised to find out that the records that were passed to me were incorrectly spelled.I would appreciate any information that you could provide. I am very interested in finding out more about my grandmother's family. Have a cup of coffee on me. Thanks again for your help in advance. I look forward to hearing from you.
Bob
Hello Lavonne
I wish I had more information on The Feyersien Family. I have found in the research of The Wiscour Family Name (My Fathers Family), from Luxembourg ,that the spelling changed many times over the generations. I believe that Catherine was born in Luxembourg and married my grandfather, Antonie Wiscour in Chicago,Ill. I am unsure if the families knew each other in Luxembourg?? The only other information I have that was not posted, was that Catherine had two brothers, John J. Feyersien, born Mar 1,1868, died Nov 16,1945, Chicago,Ill, buried St Josephs Cemetery, Chicago,Ill. and Nicolas Feyersien, born Aug 15, 1873 ,Unknown, died Jun 5 1946,Chicago,Ill.,buried St Boniface Cemetery, Chicago,Ill. This information came from memorial cards from their funerals, that were passed on to me. If there is any way that I can help you, please let me know. I would appreciate any information that you might come across in the future,I'll do the same. I look forward to hearing from you,my regards to you and your family.
Bob Wiscour from,Lake of The Ozarks,Missouri.
Hi Bob
Thank you for responding. Catherine could possibly be a sibling of my Grandfather, Henry Feyereisn. He was born in 1864, died in 1957 so he is in the same "time frame". He did mention additional siblings other than Mathew and Peter. Again his father's name was Peter. If I find out any additional info re a Catherine, I will let you know. Thanks again!
Lavonne Buchanan

Hi Bob,
I'll start simple because it is still too early in the morning for me to think sharp..... no coffee yet! My dad is Edward Nicholas Feyerisen (still living, 83 years old), lives in Castlewood, SD. My grandparents were Nicholas Feyerisen and Anna Feyerisen. They both came over Ellis Island but didn't meet until they were in America. Of course the name was spelled different, it was something like Feyereisen but I talked via e-mail to a Romain Feyereisen in Luxembourg who told me how even over there the "Feyerisen's" started spelling the last name differently. Anyway it wasn't until I talked to him and got that particular spelling that I found Grandpa's name on the Ellis Island list. Hey, I'll dig out my file and let you know more later if you want me to. Have a good day, Bev.

My grandfather, Nicholase was born in 1875 and was from Kehlen, Luxemburg. He came over in 1893. Grandma was Anna Ecker born in 1879 from Kiespelt. She came over in 1903. I recently lost my hard drive and the e-mail address from this Romaine but I"m sure I could get it back. The reason I couldn't find Grandpa's name on Ellis Island for a long time was because of the constant spelling changes of the last name but this Romaine told me his story and then it worked. Have you tried Ellis Island site yet? You have to be very very patient getting onto it but it might help. Now you have me excited again and I'm going to try again. I did get a copy of G/G marriage certificate from a: Wilma J Vande Berg. They were married in Grenville, Iowa (sp). Her e-mail is: wjvb@mtcnet.net. She was, at the time working on ancestery of Dr. Wayne Feyereisen at Mayo Clinic. She also suggested www.rootsweb.com/ ________ ( don't know what this was) iabutler ? ? ? Haven't tried it.
Bev
