Fielding/Fielden m. Clegg

I am seeking information on Sarah/Sally Fielding m William Clegg (maybe b. C 1803 Crompton, Lancashire, a weaver) married possibly 18 Aug 1828 Oldham, Lancashire, UK, who had a daughter Jane Clegg (b. C 1829 Lancashire) who married David Kershaw 16 December 1849 Prestwich, Lancashire. Jane and David were living at Hopeton Fold, Oldham at the time of their marriage.

I have been advised that there is an entry in the 1841 census for a Clegg family with the parents being William (35, weaver) and Sally (40) and a daughter Jane (13). Maybe "Sarah" was a "Sally". The "Sarah" information comes from the death certificate for Jane in Australia so I am aware that this maybe incorrect/correct.

Hello Wendy,I too have followed a similar track as you; having firm dates and names from about 1800 onwards and have also seen the data for the early Lancashire Fieldings way back into the 1600's.
My first confirmed names are William Fielding of Oswaldwistle married Peggy [Margaret] Starkie at Burnley 11th. Nov. 1798.
I have comprehensive info for most of that family line through to the present day.
I have not been able to tie William back before that except that his pattern of first names are William, John, Peter,Henry, Alice, and Peggy.

Does any of that slot into your line?

Sue

Re: fielding family

Hello Peter,it is nice to hear from a Fielding with one of our family first names. As you have not given any clues to where your family originated from you are obviously fishing a very vast ocean! For what it's worth then, here is a bit from one Fielding line which shares the name of Peter.

A great number of Fieldings came from north west Yorkshire and north Lancashire, mentioned in 1480 at Heyhouses, Lancs. Many more, and these are my lines in particular, from around Accrington, Oswaldwistle, Church, Blackburn and Burnley. First records from the parish records are to be found as early as 1600 and the first Peeter Fildenn married Anne Yates 5 Jan. 1606 at Blackburn St. Mary. The first name in Oswaldwistle is dated as 1633.
I have tried researching my husband's family who lived around Oswaldwistle during the late 1700's- early 1800's.
The pattern of our family names include William, Peter, John, James, Henry, Peggy and Alice.

William Fielding and Peggy Starkie married Dec. 1798 at Burnley, had sons William b. 1810, John 1812 and a son Peter b. 1815 who was my husband's gr.gr.grandfather. Two daughters, Margaret 1817 and Alice 1800.
Looking at the names, William and John must have been important earlier ancestors.

Peter married Mary Clark [from Ireland] with whom he had a number of children.
Peter's family and associated relatives left Accrington and had migrated by 1840 to seek work in Handforth, Cheshire.
Peter's first son was William Clark Fielding b.1842, the second, John Starkie Fielding b.1846, their third son Henry Grimshaw, then Peter Charles and lastly Walter Thomas. Two girls were Margaret and Effie Clark [Ephemia].
The son William Clark Fielding is our line. He married Martha Stafford in 1864 but abandoned his family and disappeared about 1880; legend has it it that he eloped with a publican's wife in Hyde, Cheshire and went to the USA never to be heard of again. According to census returns and certificates he was a "manufacturing chemist", a "hatter" and was an itinerant fiddler who played his violin in the pubs around Hyde.

As for the other sons of Peter and Mary their histories are most confusing. Peter Charles ended up in Litherland near
Liverpool in 1891. Walter was a pupil teacher who was living in Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire with his sister Margaret in 1891, while Henry only features once in the 1861 census as a scholar in Handforth.
Effie never married, worked at Cranford Grammer School and died quite young.

Just to add one or two other possible clues, the names of CUNLIFFE, GIBSON, GRIMSHAW and McFARLANE crop up in the pattern of names.

That is the outline of my lot so should any of those names ring a bell or if I can help with any questions, do let me know.

John Starkie Fielding evaporated into thin air and only has his baptism and birth certificate [where Starkey is spelt with a "Y"] to prove his existance.

Cheers, Sue Fielding.

Re: Fieldings in Lancashire

The world is very large and without more clues to your family all I can say is that many Fieldings originated in Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire.

For my Fielding family the name Peter is of much interest. John also and William.
Our William Clark Fielding who moved to Hyde Cheshire from Oswaldwistle Lancs., was married to Martha Stafford of Hyde. About 1878 he abandoned his family and disappeared with the wife of a local publican. Family legend said that they ran away to the USA but I have not found any evidence to support that.
There were a great number of Fieldings around Oswaldwistle and Accrington, Lancs. working as weavers, Calico Block Printers etc. mainly 1800-1850, earlier in 1700's and later as well.
William's father was called Peter b. 1815 and had brothers William b 1810, and John bur. at Church Kirk 1812. Sisters Peggy and Alice, all born in the same district.
Other sibling names were Henry, Charles, Thomas and just one Walter. The girls are Mary, Effie [aka. Elsie and Euphemia].
His grandfather William Fielding, b. abt. 1770 married Margaret Starkie [Peggy] 11 Nov. 1798 at Burnley.
Associated names connected with William are Clark [his mother Mary Clark married Peter Fielding Oct. 1840] Starkie, a very ancient esteemed family in the area, Cunliffe another local family and Grimshaw, ditto.
Peter Fielding, a Block Printer, moved briefly to Salford before working for James Cunliffe in Handforth, who also had migrated south from Accrington. Son William was brought up in Handforth, Cheshire SW of Stockport like his siblings and according to 1861 & 1871 census and marriage certificate was variously described as a Manufacturing Chemist and a Hatter.
To this day, he, William Clark Fielding has never been heard of since.

That is the gist of my Fielding family.
We have NO Richard but that could have come later.

Around Hyde in Cheshire were other Fieldings, many were farmers but none of their names are remotely similar.

Should any of this info. be of help to anyone I would be glad to know.

Sue.

Hello Lois,

It seems that I cannot help you either; there were so many Fielding names around Blackburn and without further information such as which year Peter was born it is well nigh impossible. I assume that the date you give, 19th. March, is indeed his date of birth.
Peter, too, has a similar problem for without any details at all, there is nothing to work on.
I have had a brief look, as you too will surely have done, at the IGI, but I cannot see any connecting baptism for him. I have got a big collection of baptisms for the Fieldings in that area but I need time to go through them.
Unfortunately I do not have Non-Conformist records which might account for the absence of his name.

There were not, infact, that many Peters' as I said in my message to Peter, so there is every likelihood that there are links between the families who had children named Peter. I have a strong belief in the pattern of family names which I cling to.
I shall look through my data and will post again if anything of interest crops up.
Do you have any further names and dates for your grandmother which might help?

Sue.

All were farmers or had related work until the industrial revolution took over and so some diversified. My section of the family were farmers and as you probably know the name fielding means granted a piece of land
wendy
Hello
I was a fielding before I married. I have done a fair amount of research as my family {my dad's) all come from the Lancashire area. I have traced back to early 1800s and most are farmers or moved towards industry as part of the industrial revolution. Many of the families consisted of many children who all survived!! There are records going back to 16th C who I'm sure are related but it takes time to unravel.

does this help?
Wendy

Hi.
I too have Israel Fielding from Bradford on Avon in my family tree. Like you I was/am stuck.

I recently visited the Wiltshire History and Research Centre. I spent the day looking for more information on Israel Fielding,I found the baptism of Israel in 1794 in Bradford on Avon, also the one for his brother George in 1796.
I have tried to find the Wedding of Israel and Elizabeth, Records Office have suggested that I try looking at the local Parishes, that will have to wait for another time.

I am able to confirm that Israel Fielding parents were Israel Fielding and Mary. I believe that Mary could be Mary Spender, they married in Bradford on Avon in 1783. The timeing matches the births of the children.

I believe that Mary Spender's parents were Gabriel Spender and Dorothy.

Prior to this time there is not much sign of Fielding's being in Bradford on Avon, I wonder whether Israel Fielding (Mary's) husband came from the Potterne area. Don't know.

Hope that this helps with your research.

By the way, my line follows down from Israel and Elizabeth son John Fielding who married Caroline Maslin.

Anthony, I'm not sure if we have exchanged information before but here I am anyway.
Yes, I am from George's line. His daughter, Jane, was my g/g/grandmother. She married Samuel Stringer from Warton/Polesworth. They married in Snareston Cof E chapel at Snareston 22 Jan 1838 OR 23 Jan 1835. Their son, George was my g/grandfather and his son Samuel, my grandfather, his son Harold, my father.
I don't have any information about George Fielding, only their names, and nothing about their parents so I would welcome any feedback.
All the best.
Wendy

The research into my Fielding family ancestors has slowed down now that I am reliant on IGI and parish records. So, am now resorting to additional methods. My 4g grandfather Henry had a son, George, b.3/4/1787 in Darley,Derbyshire. He married Ann Mason 13/10/1805 at Appleby Magna, Leicestershire. The family expanded rapidly and moved to Snarestone, Leicestershire from this period onwards.
If you think you are related to this part of the family and are not already in touch with me, I would like to hear from you. Thks, Anthony H.Fielding

After some hurried initial research, it looks now as though, unknown to me, Jane Fielding b.1815 was an additional sibling to Ann b.1802 (born out of wedlock ?) James 1807, Richard 1816, George 1822 and Catherine b.1828.
Further research ongoing.
Anthony.

Hello Wendy, nice to hear from you.

So far I seem unable to find any trace of the names you mention on my tree, except George. I am, so far, unable to trace a daughter 'Jane' I will do some research on your names in the next few days. My George was born in Snarestone in 1822 and married Hannah Jervis in 1850. His father George was born in 1787 in Darley, Derbyshire and married Ann Mason in 1805 at Appleby Magna. I feel sure our families must be linked at some point.
Look forward to hearing more from you.
Anthony (tonyf@tuckeyg.freeserve.co.uk)

Dear Peter,
I'm replying across the world from New York state in the US.
My grandmother who was born in 1872 had a paper in her bible with these names:
Peter Fielding, born March 19th, town of Blackburn,
Lancashire County, England
Mary Fielding born October 23rd 1740, town of Greenwich,
state of Connecticut,
I have no idea why these names were important to her. Maube you can help me solve the mystery.Lois
