Gene,
I have independently confirmed your information about Emma Figge. I came across an old file of information from my father. It listed three siblings of his father (John C. Figge, of Annandale, MN, born Illinois in Oct., 1863). The listed siblings of John C. Figge were Will, Fred and Emma Figge, all from MO. In addition, a letter in the file stated that Emma Figge had married Berry See of MO. So we have an exact match to data in the 1880 census for the family of William C. Figge, born in Germany in Aug., 1833.

Paul, this should be the information that you needed. Now you have a confirmed match showing that William C. Figge was the father of John C. Figge.
Best, Jim

You cannot mean "1990" census and if you further meant "1890", that neither should exist. We family tree-ers hope that some vestige of the 1890 census exists out there, for it was destroyed by fire. No one has had a look at same.

Arrival times have varied but I believe William did arrive in New Orleans.

Gene
Gene,
That might be a different William Figge. According to the 1990 census, the William C. Figge that we are speaking about (born Aug., 1833; died Sept., 1912) immigrated in 1844.

We may need to do some more research on this.

Best,
Jim

I will reply here.

There is a record of Wilhelm-William Figge's arrival in New Orleans 13 Nov 1857 aboard the Edmund from Bremen. Any search "in the East" would not prove fruitful.

It is likely he traveled up the Mississippi to Saint Louis.

Gene
It has been a crazy few weeks.

I forgot to mention that I had found information regarding a Louis Figge but I can't remember where I located that information - perhaps in another census.
I think you're onto something there. I believe William Figge is John Figge's father also. I found that entry in the 1880 census, too, and figured it may be a match. I tried to search other censuses for William back east but came up empty. That was years ago.

I would love a copy of John's marriage certificate. I do have a photo of John Figge with his wife, Ellen, at my grandparents wedding circa 1928 in Minnesota. I am not sure if you are interested in any photo's are not but I am happy to share.

Paul

I appreciate your help!!

Emma Louise Figge (1865-1921) married one Barry Joseph See (1865-1926). I research the SEE name as an elder sister of my maternal or distaff 2xgreat-grandmother married a SEE after the death of her first husband. We can chat here or with emails.
Paul,
Nice to hear from you.

Based on the 1880 census and 1900 census, I believe that William C. Figge (born in August, 1833, in Germany, immigrated to the US in 1844) is the best lead for John C. Figge's father. If you review the 1880 census, you will find that William C. Figge is listed as the head of household and John Figge is listed as a single male child, age 16, born in Illinois. In addition, the 1880 census lists an older brother William, age 18.

There are four facts here that are an exact match to the known data about John C. Figge: (1) John was born in October, 1863. Hence, he would have been 16 years old for the first 9+ months of 1880. (2) John's birth state was Illinois. (3) The 1880 census lists an older brother, William, age 18, which would fit with your information. (4) We know that John's father was born in Germany, which matches the known facts about William C. Figge.

In searches through the 1880 census, I cannot find any other John Figge who matches the correct age and correct birth state. Hence, I believe William C. Figge is the correct match for John's father.

What do you think?

I hope we can chat some time and compare notes. Let me know if you need a copy of the PDF of John's marriage cert.

I am working on the family tree for our children so I would appreciate any info you can share. I am trying to piece together which William Figge is John's father. I have found a few in my research but the only real record I have found is the 1880 census from Independence Township in Missouri. Marlene and John are here visiting us now in Arizona and she said that you have done some research and could probably help me out.
Wlliam C. Figge (1833-1912) is interred in Germania Cemetery, Prairie East twp, Schuyler co., MO, not far from my little hometown, Downing, here in northeast Missouri. He was first married 07 Feb 1859 to one Dorothea Kratz (1840-1880). They had seven known children, Dorothea died in childbirth. William then married 18 Apr 1888 to one Mary Ann GEORGE Morgan (1834-1915). I do not have any issue noted for the second marriage. I can give you information on William C. Figge's childre; some married into branches of my tree. I have no FIGGE ancestry; however, I work all lines as I cannot seem to stop at just my own.

Hi Gene,

I would like any information you have on William C Figge. I agree with Jim's earlier email that I think John C Figge's father was named Louis Figge. I found that information in a census some years ago but have failed to make a connection beyond that. John did have a brother named William (who was married to a woman named Mary as I recall my Mom referring to his wife as "Aunt Mary Will" because she had two Aunt Mary's in the family).

Jim were you able to forward a copy of John C Figge and Ellen Mulqueeny's marriage certificate? If not, I will be happy to forward it.

Thanks for your help!

Paul Ost (son of Mary Catherine Duggins)

It is actually a township division, Independence twp, in Schuyler co., MO...my home county now. After my birth my parents brought me back to their home in the little town of Downing. After my career in telecommunications in Iowa and Colorado, I returned in 2004 to be nearby. Mother died this past April, I am here to help Dad, and I am consumed by my genealogy.

The Figge name was rife in this county, with not a few families of the name. One line married into my Sleightom branch and another into my Rowe branch, both on Mother's side.

My thought is that your John C. was the son of William C. & Dorothea Kratz Figge, not directly related to me and my Figge lines, but still of great interest. I would love to figure out the convolutions of the family name Figge here.

I did have the name Ellen Mulqueeney and I would like to have a PDF copy of her marriage certificate with John C. Figge. I would also love it if you and I would come to correspond.

Regards,
Gene Bruner
gene.b1948@sbcglobal.net

Hi,
My grandfather was John C. Figge, from Annandale, MN. My father was James J. Figge, Sr. I have a copy of the original marriage certificate between John C. Figge and Ellen Mulqueeny. I found this in my father's old files. If anyone wants a copy I can send a PDF. I have also been trying to track the names of John C. Figge's parents. My father always told me that his father was born in Illinois. I believe that John C. Figge was born in Illinois in approximately 1863.

I have two leads for John C. Figge's father. One is Louis Figge. Another is William C. Figge.

Louis Figge came from Prussia and settled in Illinois. I have not been able to definitively link him to John C. Figge, but it is still a possible lead.

There is a William C. Figge listed in the 1880 census from Independence, Mo, and he had a son named John Figge who was born in Illinois in 1864. Hence, this might be a good starting point.

If anyone has other leads, please let me know.

James J. Figge, M.D.

From 2007 I lately note y our query about John Figge and his Ellen Mulqueeney. It seems his siblings are in my family tree through marriages with these names: BAIRD, SEE, MINIUM, and AYER. I find the Figge name a bit of an enigma with many of the name found here in Schuyler co., MO, my home county in northeast Missouri. I would be happy to share information.
Hi Pat,

I am glad to hear you located Marlene. I heard she has been under the weather for some time. I hope she is better. I speak often with my Aunt Margie (my mother's younger sister) and she asked me to say hello to you. She wanted to know about Uncle Frankie. Thank you for your reply.

Paul

Thanks Paul. I found her in Maple Lake Mn. I had the
wrong spelling for Marlene. I had RAISH instead of RAICHE. You're correct, I remember meeting your mother, in Annandale when I was very young. I'm 71 now.

Hi Carol. I was trying to find Marlene Raiche's address and I came across Your response of three years ago on the internet. I can remember you staying with our family in Brooklyn Center. I still tell people stories about visiting your family in the Upper of Michigan. My dad was Francis and my mom was Helen.

Pat Figge

Does anyone know anything about any FIGGE immigrating 1886 and living around the Tazewell or Peoria County, IL area?
A researcher/descendant of my GG-Grandmother's 2nd marriage has her maiden name as FIECK, however there is no entry in Germans To American for a Julia/Julie FIECK. I did however locate an entry for May 1886 for a Julia FIGGE arriving in NY. I seems the name FIGGE could easily have phonetically sounded like FIEKE.
I have no parents or siblings for Julia. She married abt. 1889 in Pekin, Tazewell County to Peter TRAUTMANN (his 2nd marriage). Their first child Alma (my Ggrandmother) was born in Pekin in 1889. Shortly after they moved to Knox County, Nebraska and finally to McLean County, North Dakota.

Does anyone have a Julia that might fit this description?

Thanks,

Vera

The names you gave struck my curiousity. My GG-Grandmother Julia M (Maria/Margaretha) was quite possibly a FIGGE, b. 1869 Germany, married 1889 Pekin, Tazewell County, Illinois to Peter TRAUTMANN who was born 1856 in Hessendarmstadt, Germany. She had boys: Albert William b. 1902 NE and Frederick 1908 ND. (other children: Alma b. 1889 Illinois-G-Grandmother, Elizabeth 1891 NE-died, Gretchen Elizabeth 1897NE, Philip 1899 NE, Hulda 1905 ND, Amanda, 1909 ND, Carl 1911 ND (Carl, Amanda, Frederick have different father- Anton LOVO).
Julia M. immigrated in May 1886 from Germany, and filed Declaration of Intention in 1906 ND (Peter died 1905-1907 ND). The info was pretty vague on the document: born 1869, arrived NY from Germany May 1886 Port of St. Louis, signed Julia Trautman. No port of St. Louis existed, but many Germans went there as their destination. Another family researcher, a descendant of Julia's 2nd marriage, had the info that Julia's maiden name was FIECK, however no listing for a Julia M, Marie/Margaretha, Julienne ect matched any FIECK entry in German's to America under any possible varient spelling. Only very possible match was for a Marie FIGGE, age 19, origin Mecklenburg, arrived 26 May, 1886 from Hamburg to NY, ship Rugia.

Vera
