Hi Lorna,
I have no idea who Jonathan's siblings were. No family records show one way or the other. You're right about the Findlay (Findley, Finly) name. It is hard to trace. I have tried ScotlandsPeople, but unfortunately, they will not send me a password or even respond to my queries. I'm hoping to find a genealogy researcher in the area who can help.

Heather

Hi
I'm wondering if your Jonathan b 1808 had a brother William who emigrated to Australia. I have absolutely no clues about William and only know he married Elizabeth Hill and had a family in Tasmania.
I presume you've looked on scotlandspeople.gov.uk for your James. They have a great coverage of parish registers, but the trouble with the name Findlay is that there are too many of them.
Lorna

FINDLAY in Slamannan / Lanarkshire and area

Is anyone here researching Findlays from the area of Slamannan / Lanarkshire / New Monkland area of Scotland?

We have hit a puzzle in our research - my ancestor, James FINDLAY born c. 1843 in Slamannan Stirlingshire to John FINDLAY and Helen MORRISON. James went on to marry Hellen MULHOLLAND.

Puzzle starts here. James appears to have a number of younger siblings, born to Helen MORRISON and GEORGE FINDLAY, not James FINDLAY.

Did John die and Helen marry his brother/cousin/unrelated Findlay? Was James born out of wedlock and John and Helen never marry? Or was the birth for James simply registered incorrectly?

Has anyone else got these folks in their tree?

Thanks!

Katherine

katherine_bryce@hotmail.com

Obituary: Sir John Ritchie Findlay (1865-1930)

Obituary
Sir J. R. FINDLAY
PUBLIC SERVICES TO SCOTLAND
Sir John Ritchie Findlay, Bt., of Aberlour, K.B.E., Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire, died at his residence, 3, Rothesay-terrace, Edinburgh, early yesterday morning. He had been confined to his house for the past six months, but until a week or tow ago he had been able to attend to his many important public and business interests. He was in his 65th year.

The eldest son of the late Mr. J. Ritchie Findlay, of Aberlour, who was a nephew of the founder of The Scotsman, the late baronet became on his father's death in 1898 the principal partner in Messrs. John Ritchie and Co., the proprietors and publishers of The Scotsman and its associated newspapers. He was an enlightened and progressive newspaper proprietor with a high ideal of the moral responsibility of the Press to the public. His newspaper interests, however, absorbed only part of his activities. He never entered the competitive arena of local or national politics, but his services were much sought after on semi-public administrative boards and public committees, and he gave himself unstintedly in that work. Sir John Findlay was particularly interested in the furtherance and encouragement of art and archaeology, in which he followed in the footsteps of is father, the donor to the nation of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Queen-street, Edinburgh. Sir John was Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the National Galleries of Scotland, and for a long time Chairman of the Edinburgh College of Art. His antiquarian interests found an outlet in his position as Vice-Chairman of the Scottish Ancient Monuments Board, and he was also an original member of the Royal Fine Art Commission of Scotland. He gave useful service to Scottish education as a member of the Advisory Council to the Scottish Education Department, and he undertook a very heavy task a few years ago when he became Chairman of the Scottish Advisory Committee on the Rivers Pollution.

On the outbreak of the Great War he was invited by the Government to become Chairman of the Scottish National Housing Company, which was entrusted with the construction of housing at Rosyth, the new naval base which was of such great service to the nation in the War. Sir John's success in this enterprise led to his being asked by the last Unionist Government to form a company to accelerate house building in Scotland by the construction of steel houses. Many of these activities he was carrying on simultaneously — a heavy burden even for a stronger man physically. He never complained, however and his ability and self-sacrificing zeal won him not only the admiration but the personal esteem and good will of is colleagues and all who were brought into contact with him. Reserved and reticent, he never sought publicity, but many knew him as the soul of honour and integrity, as a man on whose judgment and discretion they could implicitly rely.

Sir John Findlay was educated at Harrow, where he was a contemporary of Mr. Baldwin and of Mr. John Galsworthy. From Harrow he passed to Balliol College, Oxford, where he graduated with double honours, in Natural Science and in Literae Humaniores. In 1901 he married Harriet Jane, daughter of Sir Jonathon Backhouse, of Darlington. Lady Findlay ably supported her husband in his public work and was herself Chairman of the Scottish Unionist Association two years ago, the first woman to hold that office. Sir John was created K.B.E. in 1917 and baronet in 1925. In 1928 he was appointed to Lord Lieutenant for Banffshire, the county in which Aberlour, the family estate is situated. He was an honorary R.S.A. and an honorary LL.D. of Edinburgh University. Sir John is survived by Lady Findlay and a family of three sons and two daughters. The heir to the baronetcy is Mr. J. E. R. Findlay, who is a partner in John Ritchie and Co., and has been associated with the management of the firm for the past five years. The elder daughter is the wife of Sir Hugh Lucas-Tooth, former M.P. for the Ely Division.

Probably not much chance of a connection here but I am looking for a connection with regard to my 3rd greatgrandparents William Gordon and Ann Findlay. Not sure if they were married here or in Scotland. They moved to Drummond township and received a grant from the crown in 1846 near Drummond centre. One of their children John Gordon moved up to Lanark village soon after.

Cheers,

Bill Morrison

Wow, would you believe that I posted this for my husband and never came back to this Ancestry site?

Were you able to find any Findlays of Carribean descent? You can email me directly at slf@aol.com.

What Findlays do you know still in St. Vincent?

I know that a Scottish Findlay was given some land by a King or Queen in St. Vincent. Came there to claim it and married a native woman who was my husband's great great grandmother. Would love to hear from you.

Sheila Findlay

My Findlay line came to VA from Kings County, Ireland in 1797. I'm guessing their emigration occurred to avoid the 1798 Rebellion. While on a recent trip to Ireland, someone suggested that the name used to be O'Findlay, which would make the name of Irish background. I've still work to do on that theory.

Feonlleoch(?)Findlay

All I have been able to find out about the origin of the name concurs 100% with R. Findlay's information. And everyone in my family enjoys an adult beverage from time to time (that time being Any Time).
The subject name - Feonlleoch - is, I believe, one of the old Gaelic roots of Findley/Findlay.
The reason I've strayed into the Findlay-with-an-"a" fora is because I've come to a brick wall on the Findley-with-an "e" side. My family oral history says my ggrandfather William came here (USA) from Glasgow post-Civil War., and settled in the southeastern Ohio/Wheeling, W VA area. I have found a family arriving on the SS India from Glasgow 9 June 1871 with a William of about the right age (15 yrs). Any info would be greatly appreciated!
