I would love to see what you've got re the family tree. I drew a blank trying to find Annie MacLeod's birth, there were just too many to narrow it down.
Hi,

Yes there's definately a connection. My Grandmother was Margaret Finlay and her sister was Annie Finlay. Their parents were robert Finlay and Annie Macleod. My Mum was the daughter of Margaret Finlay and Alexander Lawrie (never married). So we share a Great Grandfather. I have photos of bother Margaret and her sister Annie if you'd like to see them. Do you have any photos of your Grandfather. I have your Grandfather Robert on my tree, and another brother John! There's a lot of old family stories surounding my Grandmother's relationship with Alexander Lawrie and I think your Grandfather Robert tried to help out, do you know anything about this. Look forward to hearing from you.

Anne

Hello there,
et
I believe we are related! Would you be Margaret Mackenzie Finlay's offspring born in 1902? She was my Grandfather Robert Finlay's (1900) sister. My mother was Jeanie Bushel Finlay.

My Great Grandfather was Robert Finlay (1873 - 1934), he was married to Annie Macleod in 1898 she died in 1921, Robert Finlay then married Isobel Macleod in 1922.

Re: a FINLAY/TULLY connection??

I have found a marriage of a Matilda A. Finlay to an Edward Tully, Islington, UK in the Dec1/4 1931. The possibly had one child (as far as I know??) called Jean M.Tully born 1933 at Pancras, London. IF it is the correct 'Edward' he died very young in about 1937. This Matilda MIGHT HAVE BEEN a Matilda Agnes born at Pancras circa 1896. I'm actually 'doing' the Tully line and have only JUST come across this entry which IF DOES FIT onto my tree, would open up perhaps new avenues of enquiry/information etc., etc??

Does the above ring any bells with anyone??

Lin

Sorry I don't know a whole lot of history myself but I'm the grandson of the Alexander Finlay which decided to close the soap and candle works. He had five children. 2 of which are still near Belfast. 1 is in Alberta, Canada. 1 is in Ontario, Canada. 1 has sadly passed away but leaving behind three grown up and succesful children. I was looking at this website on a whim so please don't expect any other reply from me I probably won't be back. Just Know that the family is alive and well and the next generation is already well underway.

Thank you so much for your reply. Indeed you are the person I've been hoping to find. First...I am very keen to know the birth & death dates of Finlay men from about 1790 to 1850 especially Alexander and son and Alexander and father. I'm sure you are surprised to find such a request coming from so far away as California. It's a long story...my mother was from Ballyward, CoDown. Her father's family from Lisburn. Back about late 50's early 60's my parents and I were in Lisburn to attend a family reunion. When ever I was in Ireland I loved to go antiquing and my mother, her sister and my cousin and I went one day to Smithfield's in Belfast. It was a huge old cold and drafty place but boy did they have some great stuff and CHEAP. I bought a number of small things and then I found two big things. I thought to myself that their purchase would pay for everything I got plus the crating and shipment by sea (Blue Star Line) Belfast to San Francisco. They took months to arrive. What I bought was two oil portraits. One was so filthy one could hardly see the subject! That one had hung over a fireplace and the smoke was thick but otherwise it was perfect. The frame unfortunatly was not perfect so I got it cheaper w/o the frame. The other was clean and in perfect condition. I have a trained eye and thought it was as good as many I have seen in museums. Scratched on the backquite crudely "Alexander Finlay father of the man who started the soap company". No dates, nothing else. Well, I never got around to selling them. The young (dirty) man is in a beautiful dark green jacket with white linen around his neck and his hair randomly falling on his forehead totally clean, restored (big job)&^ re-framed in period frame is hanging in our living room (main sitting room to you I guess) resplendent with antique English, Chinese and Japanese (& contemporary) furniture and art. The other, a middle aged, portly fellow, very fine looking high forehead in beautiful rusty- brown jacket and white linens of the period is looking down on me as I type this here in my library. Let me tell you it's a cold grey day in this part of California. Today is Sunday 1:05pm. It started snowing Wednesday and I lost powerThurs morning and telephone too. No heat from furnace . No water, etc. My emergency generator wouldn't start so it got so bad that yesterday my next door neighbor took me and the dog in for dinner and we stayed overnight. The elec is back on and I'm warm and cozy now but the roads looks icey. Go to Google and enter Nevada City/Grass Valley, California and you can see our town. Email me direct and give me your eMail address. I'll send you photos of the paintings next time me teenage assistant (& computer guru)comes over. What is your name? Give me your phone number as I can call UK cheap. Kindest regards, Doug Vernon douglascvernon@yahoo.com

Just thought I'd let you know the Finlay family have far from died out. My mother's maiden name is Finlay and has four brothers. Her father was Alexander Finlay and was part of the soap and candle factory in Belfast until it closed. There is information on our family at the Ulster Folk Museum.
Hi Dee,
Thank you for contacting me. James Vincent was my Great grandfather's, Robert, brother. I visit NI at least yearly to spend time with James and Roberts grandchild, Joy Vincent McCloskey, in Coleraine. Robert's daughter, Elizabeth Vincent, married Jame's son William Vincent as I am sure you know.
I have quite a bit of Vincent family info which I would be glad to share if you are interested. I would really appreciate the info you have.
Please feel free to email me at westieschiller@yahoo.com. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sue
Looking for any possible ancestor links to my Edward Finlay. Think he came over from England to Philly in 1840. Not found in 1850 or 1860 England or USA censuses. Married to Mariah Walker in Belmont, Ohio in 1865. She was from Pa, Ohio or WVa (depending on which children's death cert or census report you want to believe). Edward seems to have been a coal miner who showed up in 1870 Warrensburg, Mo and 1880 Wheeling, WVa censuses. Died in Wheeling in 1889. Children: Amilia (Finley) Garrett (1848-1929 Wheeling, WVa), William Finley b 1851, and Elizabeth (Finley) Bauer(1858-1938 Wheeling, WVa). Any help would be appreciated.

JANE FINLAY of Ireland and MN

Do you know of a Jane Finlay <1833> born in Ireland that married Thomas Carver <1820> also of Ireland? They appear in the 1860 & 1870 census reports in Ramsey, MN with their children WILLIAM J <1853>, ISABELLA <1856> AND CHANCEY <1858> (all born in MN). They also appear in LDS records as all being born in Naperville, IL but the census reports negate that data. Believe there were more children but they may have died in childhood.

Alexander Finlay (Finlay Soap Ltd Belfast No Ireland)

Seek any & all info re this family. Belfast records of 1805 show Alex Finlay as soap boiler @ 10 Hanover Quay (Customs House Quay). The Belfast Traders Directories show them in business up through 1913 often moving e.g. High St, Ann St,Victoria Square. In 1848 Belfast/Holywood RR opened. About that time John Finlay purchased in Holywood "Tudor Hill" 11 acres house & farm. In 1900 Finlay family purchased "Willesdon" That's all the info I've been able to gather. I live in Californa so can't explore around on my own. All I have is the internet. My mothers family is all County Down & Antrim so I'm comfortable with Ulster history. Supposedly family "died out" after WW2. Info greatly appreciated. Doug Vernon

Jane Finlay/James Mcivor- County Antrim

I am looking for any links to Jane Finlay who married James McIvor in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1867, they then settled in Ballygoland, near Carnmoney County Antrim where Jane became a flax dresser at the nearby Whitehouse Mill. They had 6 children Emily, Margaret, Sarah, Jane, James and Thomas. Emily, Margaret, Sarah and James lived in Middlesbrough for a while (from around 1899-1910). Emily died in 1899 in Middlesbrough. Any info on either Finlays or McIvors greatly appreciated.
