Certainly. I am not sure exactly what information you are requesting so I will provide you with some info on what we are doing at the Finney DNA Project.
We are utilizing DNA from living Finney's in an effort to identify as many of the Finney lineages as we can. DNA when combined with documented research allows individuals to confirm their documentation with science.
Family Tree DNA is the host of our project and they sell DNA testing kits to participants and these participants can join the group for their surname, if one exists, or they can join one of the many geographic DNA projects. Project administrators like myself do not make any profit from running the project, Family Tree DNA keeps it all. My co-admin is Billy Ray Watkins.
Until recently were were two types of DNA testing done for genealogical research and now there are three different types of tests. One test is called mtDNA testing. The mt is the abbreviation of mitochondrial DNA and this DNA is taken from women for research of the maternal lineage.
A new test offered by Family Tree DNA is called the Family Finder test. This tests the autosomal DNA test. This test is supposed to tell you if your are related to other participants who have taken this test and is supposed to tell you if you related from 1st-5th cousin. I have not taken this test and only one participant from the project has taken this test. Perhaps due to its price.
The remaining type of testing is the DNA testing of the Y chromosome in men for research of the paternal lineage. This is the test we are using to assist researchers in trying to determine which Finney lineage they are connected with and to identify as many Finney lineages as we can. There are 37, 67, and 111 marker YDNA tests. I suggest 37 markers to test with and then purchase upgrades to the 67 and 111 markers to refine your matches.
My YDNA testing is a great example of how YDNA can assist you in your research. I had a brick wall with my Civil War era ancestor Isaac Finney. After many years of research I could not find any documentation on who his parents were. I purchased a kit and matched with a Finney in the project. This Finney had documentation back to a Robert Finney of Chester,PA who arrived to America in 1720. Then soon after the next participant to join the project also matched with us and his documentation went back to the same Robert Finney but through a different son of Roberts. We now have 33 members and have identifed the following Finney lineages with documentation and DNA:
Robert Finney of Chester,PA I previously mentioned.
We have two participants who match and documentation for one of them connects him with the Finney's of Accomack, VA.
We have four participants who are descended from Jeffrey Finney of Nottinghamshire, England. This is Mother Finney
s lineage.
We have three participants who are descended from a Joseph Finney of North Carolina. His sons were Joseph and Joshua Finney.
We have one particpant who is descended from a Timothy Finney of Botetourt, VA and connects thru Timothy's son Pleasant R. Finney and I believe we have located one descended from another son John R. Finney who will be joining the project in the near future.
We have Finney's from other lineages who are still waiting for a Finney to join the project who will match DNA with them.I will list their furthest most documented ancestors:
William G. Finney - 1835 Maryland
Andrew Jackson Finney - 1820 Illinois
Fielding Finney = 1800 Illinois
William Finney - 1696 Glasgow, Scotland
Daniel P. Finney - Maryland
We would love to have a documented descendent of Samuel Finney of PA to join the YDNA testing.
I hope this answers your questions, if not, contact me at
