Having had all the replies to my original post deleted by persons unknown, I am reposting my query in the hope that those who responded to the original post will get in touch again. (I deleted my email address from my original post, according to the helpful advice in numerous replies, but it reappeared when all the replies were wiped. I have removed it yet again from the original post!)
"I am trying to find out what happened to my great uncle, Joseph Francis Finnie. He was born in Scissett in Yorkshire in 1887. His parents, Andrew and Margaret Finnie, were both from Sligo, in Ireland. In the 1891 census Joseph is described as a gardener, in the 1901 census as a domestic gardener, and in the 1911 census he is listed as a gardener at Mentmore. After this he seems to disappear from the records. He is not mentioned in the UK married or dead records. I wonder whether he emigrated to the United States or Canada. Does anyone have access to North American records which indicate whether he did emigrate and whether he was married in North America, and whether he stayed there. Any help would be gratefully received.
