Hi.
We may be related. There are a number of Finnie's in Ottawa Canada. My great grandfather came to Canada from Peterhead Scotland. He was the President of the Bank Of Ottawa. He had four sons. One of the sons was a goalie for the Stanley Cup Ottawa Senators. One of the other sons was my grandfather Roy Finnie.

My wife and I visited Peterhead in the Spring of 2002 .

David M.
That's the problem-I do not know. From his Confederate pension request, I guessed his birtth to be the fall of 1835. I do not know where he was born. I have not found him on any census and his two sons put different states in just about every census.
patti

When John Finney filed his Confederate Pension, the reason was Ectropion which means outward placement of the margin of the eyelid. This could be a droopy eyelid. I have not heard anyone say, but in pictures his sons look like they have droopy eyes. And I do know that one living ancestor does have a lazy eye. If you want to contact me offsite with your snailmail, I can send you what I have and then we can determine if we have something.
Patte @pfinney@swmail.sw.org

We think it is from his side, nobody on are grandmothers side of the families have this.. Does anyone in your family have any of this??

From what my dad said the spelling determines the country in Europe which we came here from.. Also there are not very many people with the spelling Finnie.. That is cool that you restore homes and do the families research who owned the home.. Like i said My line of Finnies from all i could trace back started in Tennessee them moved to Oklahoma.. I guess my Grandfathers sisters daughter is still alive and she is like 80, he is going to try and put me in touch with her to see what she knows..

I have a John Henry Finney who supposedly left home after a family dispute. Family lore says he had a brother named James. John was in the Civil War in Arkansas and then in Texas by 1870. He named his sons Walter Thomas and Robert Lee. The Lee middle name has been in every generation since. I do not see a date in your post. If you think there might be a connection, please reply. Thanks
Patti Finney

Hi There: The Finnie line that I am trying to research goes back to Robert J. Finnie in 1880s, wife Virginia, mother's name is Sarah and his father before him was also a Robert J. The other Finnie's in this line is a Robert D. Finnie, 1860 and he has 2 sisters named Mary Finnie & Belle Finnie with a brother Walter F. Finnie. Then it goes down to a Robert J. Finnie, Jr and a Peter Finnie . I had heard that there were some relatives in Sacramento but as far as I can research, the original Robert J. Finnie came from Scotland. If any of these names sound familiar let me know. Weird thing that this line named all boys Robert J or Robert D and for 3 generations, they married people with same names as their mothers, Virginia. Very hard to keep information straight on deeds.Guess they had no imagination!!! Ha Ha

I know what you mean. I have worked a long time on Finnie family and I have only a few bits and pieces. At least one of the relatives was in the military, then there are the census forms where I got the children's names from turn of the century. This relative, Robert J. Finnie owned a Duck and Hunting club but I could never find any info about that other than I have the name of it. Started, I think around 1930s-1950s.
I am not actually a Finnie. I live in the Northern California old Finnie house and I always do research on the house to try and find out who built it, when and who lived in the house. We have restored about 5 houses but this one has lead me to a dead end about the family.

I am looking for any relatives or information on Robert J. Finnie (Sr) DOB 10/31/1887 married to Virginia S. Finnie (Maiden name Slater from Canada) DOB 3/25/1890(1). They had 2 sons Robert J. Finnie Jr. DOB 3/9/19 and Peter C. Finnie DOB 5/18/22. Lived most of their lives in Butte Co, California. Robert J. Finnie JR, ended up marrying a woman whos name is same as his mother Virginia so my search into 1920s-40s gets complicated because of the 2 sets of same names. Any information I can obtain would be helpful.

Pam: In our last conversation, you mentioned these wonderful "Aunts", the sisters of your grandmother, Virginia Slater-Charlotte, Maybel Slater, there were also other siblings in that family, a Franka and a Harry. I did find some information about them, when I get your email, I will send you the information, if interested. Looks like a Genevieve Finnie, died in Douglas Co, Oregon 5-17-2002. Shows DOB as 9-3-1902. That would make her almost 100 years old when she died. Records show at some time her name was Genevieve "Grimes", not sure if that was her maiden name or she had been married previously before marrying your grandfather.
Paula

Hi Pam: You clarified that your grandfather, Robert Sr. was involved with the Northern California, Colusa Duck Clubs. What did he grow on the ranch. Did he have fruit trees that he sold off the fruit? Did he do rice or wheat? Curious as I know you said there was originally a lot of property around the house.
Also, we had to go to Grass Valley today so we found your great, great grandfather's house on Linden and Finnie Street. We used to own a rental on Linden street and a local attorney used to own that house, that was probably in late 1880s to 1990s. What a beautiful house. At one time, I bet it had a fabulous view of downtown Grass Valley before all the trees became so large and so many more houses. How interesting that we should have lived in Nevada City/Grass Valley for 35 years and end up in a house that was built by original forefathers of Nevada County. Devine Destiny!
Paula

Hi Pam: Very helpful information but opens up new thoughts and more questions!!! If Robert Jr. and his 1st wife Vickie had 2 children, wouldn't they be your cousins? And you have never met them? Were they a lot older than you and your sister/brother? So when you were young, Robert Sr. and 2nd wife Genevieve still lived in this house, the house maybe that Robert Sr. had with his 1st wife Virginia? In 1920, the census document states that Robert Sr, Virginia lived on Sheldon Street, in Gridley. Your father wasn't born yet. Then the 1930 census report does show your father Robert Jr. but no location of street where they lived.
Do you know who Mr & Mrs. Elbert Kercheval; or Mrs. Jas. Watt are? I found a 1923 local news clipping stating they came and visited Robert (RJ) Finnie Sr. along with Mr. & Mrs. Robert D. Finnie for the holidays. I was guessing, in some way, they may be relatives, possibly the women are Finnie. In my mind, I saw it, in 1924, Robert D. lived in Sacramento. Robert J, Sr. lived either in this house or maybe on Sheldon Avenue (nearby street). Robert J. Sr. had his parents over for holidays along with maybe Aunts/Uncles, or??
If you don't mind Pam, I would like to talk further. So many questions. I do appreciate finally hearing from a relative. Oh, and another question/s.
Interestingly, it appears from court recorded documents that it was Genevierve who sold off a great deal of the property, some in the 1950s, but mostly in the 1970s. I have that she died in 1990.
Do you think that your uncle, Robert Jr. got the house from his father, Robert Sr. because he was the oldest? Oh, and I also saw that Robert Jr. was in the State Assembly and was an Exec Secretary of California for the Federated Institude, Inc. Do you know what that was? Was he a lawyer? It said he was a lobbyist in the State Capitol.
Thanks again.
Paula

I am so excited. I am looking at my family tree of the Finnies and this is not making sense. I have Robert Dryden Finnie,(His mother's name was Dryden) born in 1860, married to Sara Finnie, born in 1863. Were possibly grocery owners in Sacramento. I have that they had 2 children-Robert J (or RJ)born 10/31/1887; I have they had a daughter named Elizabeth Finnie, born in 1890. I have a newspaper document stating that this Robert J Finnie had the duck club and purchased 200 acres from the Loulton Ranch in Sac valley. Then I have that Robert J. Finnie married Virginia S. Finnie(Slater was her maiden name, born 3/25/1891. I even have the census info showing her name and DOB. She died 10/12/1952. I have information that they married 5/5/1915 in Red Bluff, Ca. From that marriage, as you stated, they had 2 sons, Robert Jr and Peter. But I show that there shows up another Virginia "Vicky" or "Alice" Finnie, DOB 4/13/1921, died 2001, maiden name Carpenter.
I never was able to find out very much information on your father, Peter, except DOB 5/18/1922 in Sac; Died 9/29/1996, I have his SS# from his military records and that at one time he lived at 2766 Regal Avenue, Redding Cal. I never heard he was married or had any children. It must seem strange to have someone with family information that doesn't know one single soul of the Finnie Family!!! Paula

OH MY GOSH: Thank you Pam for the information. I have been working on the Finnie family for over 1 1/2 years. Right in front of me now is a huge ancestrial flowchart with notes of bits and pieces I have been trying to put together. Interestingly, the Virginia S. Finnie name has come up on many documents I found at Butte Co, California records, in the 1940s, 50s. Then there are a few other documents where a Virginia Finnie appears to have changed her name to Genevieve Finnie. I have so many questions I would love to chat with you sometime. You are the first person that has the facts, others may have been from a different line of the Finnies.
Actually, I am not related at all. We purchased a house in Gridley, that the previous owners said belonged to Virginia Finnie. We found some documents belonging to Robert Johnston Finnie and a poster of a Gun and Hunting Club owned by Robert J. Finnie, the Sr. I was told the Finnie family (Robert & Virginia) did not have any children so they sold off the house. We are restoring it, no specific date when built but everything thinks it was in the 1930s, kinda a bungalow. We were hoping to find some relatives that knew the owners, may have been to the house, had Pictures!!! My ultimate goal was to get the date when our house was built, by whom, who owned it, but get very involved with the families when I do the research on houses, as if they are my family.
So if you want to talk anytime, I would just love knowing about the family.
Paula Carli

I hope this helps. How are you related to the Finnie family? Pam Finnie

Paula...Was excited to get your info. too! Much of what you have is correct. I hope this helps: After my grandmother(Virginia Slater) died, My Grandfather re-married a Genevieve Finnie. They were much older and did not have any children. My grandfather died in 1960, and Genevive cotinued to live in the house for several years. My father and his brother (Robert Jr.) grew up in that house. It was a beautiful Ranch at one time, with lots of property. I was quite young when my grandfather died, but I have fond memories of that house. I think the other Virginia that you keep comming across is Robert Jr.'s first wife. They were not married for very long. She went by "vickie". They had 2 children, who I never met. As for myself, I have a brother Peter who lives in Weaverville Ca. and a sister Patty who lives in Portland Or. My mother is still alive, and lives at the address you have in Redding. I have lived in Sacramento for a long time, and also have a very old house. I hope this fills in some of the blanks for you! My home phone is (916)4571371. Feel free to call (evenings are best), or e-mail me anytime.....Pam Finnie

Paula..I hope I can answer some of these questions.I think that the house on Sheldon St. may have been my grandparents first house in Gridley. I know that my father and uncle grew up in the house you have. That's the only home my father ever talked about.
My grandfather's parents (Sarah and Robert D),were born and raised in Grass Valley. The old Finnie house is still there, also a Street named after the Finnie's! Elizabeth (Finnie) Kercheval was my grandfathers sister. Mrs James Watt was my grandfathers aunt (Rober D. sister). These were the people that you mentioned from some article?
My uncle, Robert Jr, didn't have very much contact with his children after he divorced "Vicky." They were older than us and sadly we never met them.
I know that my uncle worked at the Capital, but I was never sure what he did. He was also a Pilot.
I wish that I had more information about the house. My mother may have some pictures. I'll check with her.
Hope this helps! Pam

Paula..I tried to use the e-mail address you gave me, but it didn't go through. Not sure what I did wrong. I do agree it would be a much better way to keep in touch.
I'm not sure what my grandfather did with the property on the ranch. I don't think he grew anything for finacial support. I'll try and find out. I think the Lodge at Viola was very successful, and a large part of there income over the years.
You mentioned the view that the old Finnie house in GV must have had. I was told that in the 1800's that the town xmas tree was planted in the front yard. It's a huge Redwood, and the original star is still at the top! I guess for years it could be seen all over town. Love those kind of stories!!
It was great talking to you....hope I can continue helping out! Pam
