Patrick Finnigan

Hi, i'm hoping someone can anyone help me find some information about my G G grandad William Patrick Finnigan. I think he was born around 1854 in Ireland, he married a Sindonia Price and had two children that I know of, Mabel and Rose. Sindonia was born in Herefordshire but I know that in 1881 she was in a smallpox hospital in Greenwich and then in the 1891 she appears as a domestic in Ealing. Family myth has Patrick as a seaman working on ocean liners between Liverpool and America, family myth also has him drowning during one of these voyages which must have been before 1907 as my G grandmothers marriage cert from this date shows him to be deceased. Thanks.

Hi there,
Guess what, I have a great grandfahter Thomas Finnigan also, and he was born in 1884. I wonder if it could be the same one, and if we could be related. His son is Albert Finnigan, and his wife is florrie. They had my father Peter Finnigan, and uncle Andrew Finnigan. But I also understand that not only one person has that name. I have the family name history on how the Finnigan name got started from scratch. If you'd like me to send that to you, just let me know.
Shawn

Hi there,
My Finnigan relatives (my grand parents) were in Norbury, South London. Then when my father came to America, I have no idea where he landed. I just know he came when he was a small child, and was in southern California most of his life. He had the career of police officer for the Los Angeles County Sheriff, he was a deputy. He retired as a homicide detective.

Hi there,
My grand parents were Albert and Florrie Finnigan, and my great grandfather was Thomas Finnigan. They're all from England the U.K.. I have the information on how the Finnigan family name got started. I got that from the Historical Research Center. I'll give you a message of everything they gave me. Just let me know if you'd like it. It doesn't give the name of relatives, it explains how the name got started a LONG time ago in Ireland.

My great-great grandmother was Ellen Finnegan. She married Michael O'Brien and they lived in Mendon, NY which is not far from Lima, New York. Ellen Finnegan O'Brien was born about 1829 and died about 1900. She is buried at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Victor, NY. She had 6 children; Margaret, Thomas,Mary,Anna,James and Michael (O'Brien). Any information about Finnegans from Mendon or surrounding areas would be helpful.

Hey Steve,
Now there are ALLOT of Finnigans around. that's because the start of the name Finnigan in ancient Ireland came from the phrase "the fair headed one." I wonder if they mean color of hair, or train of thought?. But either way it makes it such a common name like Smith or Jones or Johnson. I have a friend in Ireland and she told me there is bar called "The Finnigan Pub." Now from ancestry.com I ran into a distant cousin in the finnigan family that's related to me. He loves doing the research, so he gave me all the info and it came right up to my father, uncle, and half sister. It's Mike Covel. My father Peter John Finnigan and my uncle Andrew Finnigan were both born in the United Kingdom. Their parents are Albert Finnigan and Florrie Wood. The great grand father is Thomas Finnigan. The classic Finnigan family crest is a falcon alighting proper. and the classic family motto is "I would rather die than be dishonorable"
Sincerely
Shawn

Hi, this is Shawn Wittman the son of Peter J. Finnigan. My email addresses are shawn_wittman@att.net this is with the American phone company AT&T. They merged with Yahoo as a Internet service. so that email address is also my yahoo chat ID. My other is with googles g mail it's wittman51@gmail.com. So send the emails to either one you'd like. If you have any questions just let me know, I don't know too much about him because as soon as he found out my mom was pregnant he proposed. When she asked am I your true love he said no, so she said no. Then he just stayed away from me like I had the most deadliest and most contagious disease on earth. But I know he's from the UK, his career was law enforcement, he was a deputy for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. here in the state of California. When I was born in 1970 he was 31.

yours truly
Shawn Wittman

Hello Shawn,

I've only just seen your emails on this site and I believe I'm your first cousin once removed on your father's side. The Peter and Andrew you talk about are my cousins. Their father and my mother had the same father - my grandfather Finnigan - although they had different mothers as my grandfather's first wife died and he then remarried.
His name was Thomas Finnigan and he was your great-grandfather.
I have photographs of your Finnigan grandparents (and of some of the previous generation of Finnigans) and I've done a fair bit of family history research myself, tracing my (and your) Finnigan roots further back.
If you like to send me a private email address, I'd be more than happy to share all that information with you.
Best wishes,
Mike Covell - mike.covell@virgin.net
Hey There,
Just to let you know, I interrogated my mom, and she told me that I got what she said in the past wrong. My father Peter Finnigan didn't live in Santa Monica, California. They just always had a great time there since that was a city right at the beach. He lived in Pasadena, California. He was 31 when I was born on Oct. 20, 1970. So it looks like his birth year was 1939. I also say that they came to the USA when he was a baby, because my father Peter J. Finnigan only had an American accent. I hope that you and I are related. I'm dying to find a relative on my fathers side that can accept me. His brother named Andrew is basically 7 to 10 years younger than he is, please take care.
your buddy
Shawn

Sorry I haven't responded in such a long time. I've been going through hell with my disability, and the doctor visits.
As for the dates on the Finnigan side of the family, al I can really say is that I know that my father Peter J. Finnigan was born back in 1939 in the UK. But the name of his Parents, I haven't the faintest idea. Since he refused to spend any time with me, I have no idea what the names of my grand parents are, or where they were. My uncle didn't even know I was alive until I called the police station and I talked to him, he was shocked like I was.
your buddy
Shawn

Patrick Finnigan

My great grandfather was called Patrick Finnigan and he came possibly from Ballinasloe or Killimore in Ireland and was born round about 1835. He married Mary Smith in England in 1859 and lived in Salford Lancashire. He was a baker. I know his father was called John Finnigan and he was a farmer but I have no record of John in England. Can anyone provide some information about Patrick's origins and family in Ireland or about John, his father.

Dear Steve,

Steve when I looked up PeterJ Finnigan on the public records here in the USA. I saw that we have ALLOT of Peter Finnigan's here It cost's around $50 american dollars, but you can look up phone numbers, addresses, criminal records, addresses changes through out the years, and relatives. That's on www.intelius.com But he doesn't have me down as a relative since he didn't marry my mom. So all you's see is Brother Andrew, and daughter Denise, and possibly the parents, or more kids, and possibly cousins.

Hey Steve,

You're welcome buddy. Now as for my father, i don't know much about him at all. That's because after I was born he never wanted to be around. He stayed away from me and my mother as if we were infected with aids; and you could get it just like you get the flu.
But when i caled the police station the second time. they said he has retired, but his brother is still here. So my uncle's name is Andrew. Now i also have a half sister from Peter J. Finnigan, and her name is Denise. That's what uncle andrew told me. He said. "you have EVERY right to know this, but other than this i don't want to get involved! you have a sister named Denise!" Then he hung up on me. As for peter's and Andrew's parents, I have no idea. I was hoping i could find that out on ancestry. But i see that a denise finnigan lives in San Dimas Ca., and a peter Finnigan lives there now. When he dated my mom he lived in Santa Monica. I hope any of this was helpful.
take care
Shawn

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for the reply. That is fascinating. My brother is called Peter Finnigan too.
I'm guessing that your Dad's parents aren't the same Finnigans that I'm looking for - I think the ones I'm searching for left England in the 1880s.
However if you have any history of your Dad's family (parents names, dates of birth etc, siblings names) it might be useful.

Worldwide there ain't that many Finnigans around (especially with that spelling) so we could be related & it might be worth trying to fit the jigsaw together.

Best Regards
Steve

Hell Thomas, this is shawn. I'm the son of Peter J. Finnigan. We're all here in America. Peter Finnigan here was born in England, but his parents immigrated to the USA when he was a baby. Then when he was older, but a young man. He became a police officer. He was a deputy for the Los Angeles County Sheriff, and half of his career was being a homicide detective.
As for he and I, we have only met twice. As soon as i was born he left my mom since they weren't married. So i have my mothers maiden name. If you'd like the history on the Finnigan family name. Just let me know, and I'll get that too you.
Sincerely
Shawn Wittman

Hi All
My Finnigan is Edward born in Great Crosby in 1889. In saying that his baptism says he was born in 1879 and Finnigan has a double n.
His Army papers are spelt with one n and says he was born in 1880.
His marriage certicate has only the one n and would make him born in the year 1881.
These are all orginal documents passed down, and the surname has been carried on with a double n. Suppose its not like today, when everything is exact. Good luck to us all.

I have found some more information, but none of it is particularly conclusive and it really just asks more questions than it answers. I'm not convinced my Thomas was an orphan in the strict sense. I've found parents for him, James and Elizabeth Finigan, but no record of early death for either of them. The orphan story could just be a family legend. I do know that his sister, Charlotte, was sent to Ireland when she was young, to some sort of poor institution, though why I have no idea.

The church institutions did have a policy of sending kids to the colonies in those days, so a link with Australia for your grandfather might be justified. As for my Thomas Finigan (and it's definitely just the one "n"), as far as I know, he lived and died in Liverpool.

I had assumed the Finigans came to England no earlier than the potato famine, but I might have discovered a Finigan ancestor (James' father, also Thomas) living here well before that. It looks like they migrated up to Liverpool from London, which seems a very odd route, but James is listed as having been born in London, not Liverpool, so I guess I just have to keep following the evidence.

Good luck with your search, sorry I don't seem to have a match for you.

Hi, Just wondering if you got any further with your enquiries on Thomas Finigan?

Are you sure of the birth year and the spelling of Finigan?
My grandfather Thomas Finnigan was born 1884 in Liverpool (just off Scotland Road).
His parents are a mystery (apart from their names - Thomas & Catherine) as are his whereabouts between the time of is birth certificate and his turning up to get married in Liverpool in 1915. I hadn't considered orphanages.

He did have a later link to Australia. I wonder if he could have been one of those orphaned kids transported there by the Catholic church?

Thomas Finnigan - Ireland, Liverpool, Australia

Hi all,

I'm trying to trace the history of my grandfather, Thomas Finnigan, but we don't have too much to go on.

He was born in Ennerdale Street, Liverpool in 1884.
I can't find him in the 1901 census reports in the UK.

He was a merchant seaman who seems to have been on a Liverpool to Australia route. The first time he shows up back in any UK records is in 1915, when he marries my grandmother Bridget Walters. By 1917 (the same year my Dad, also Thomas, was born) he's back in Australia, where he signs up for the Australian Imperial Expeditionary Force. He signed up in Rockhampton, Queensland. He comes back to Liverpool after the war and has a daughter Mary.

He left the family sometime in the twenties or thirties. Family legend has it that he's buried in Townsville, Queensland Australia, but I can't find any proof of this.

His parents were Thomas Finnigan and Catherine Scahill (or Seahill?). This is where the trail ends...I think.

In the 1881 census there is a Finnegan family headed by Thomas (b Ireland 1845) and Catherine (b Ireland 1847), in the next house to the one my grandfather was born in three years later. It could well be the same family(?). If so they had other children:
James b Ireland 1871
Mary b Ireland 1877
Martin b Ireland 1876
Anne b Ireland 1878
Johnn B Ireland 1880

However they have disappeared from trace by the 1891 census.
Did they emigrate from England?
Did my grandfather go with them, then come back as a seaman?
Did he go back to them after he left his Liverpool family?
Where did they come from in Ireland?

Does anyone have any links that might help, please?

Hi there - just wondering if you found a marriage by 'X' Finegan to a Catherine TERNAN, in Ireland in the mid to late 1780's?

Thanks :)
