Stan, your profile doesn't allow me to send you a message directly, otherwise I'd do that. I, like many others, access this forum from Rootsweb, not ancestry.com, and many ancestry.com subscribers don't realize that the default profile settings block direct contact from nonsubscribers.
If you are interested in the DNA project (or know of anyone who might be interested), the testing company, FTDNA, is having a 20%+ discounted sale through the end of December, 2011. Actual prices should not be discussed on these boards, but there's a link to prices at the Thrift /Frith /Firth Surname DNA Project's site map,
http://bit.ly/TFFDNATesting 67 markers is preferred, testing 37 is still helpful. See also the Background page linked at the project's site map.
(Ancestry.com also tests DNA, but they do not offer enough markers to really be informative, and cannot upgrade to testing more markers when needed, so FTDNA is MUCH preferred. Ancestry's "43 marker test" is really equivalent to FTDNA's 37 marker test. Both are useful, but take a look at the Firth "family grouping" pages to see how much more helpful 67 markers can be.)
You never know what you'll find until you do it. You may find matches in Norway, or may be surprised to find that most matches are from elsewhere. Granted that for the near future, testing a Firth who lives in (or can clearly trace to) the region of his ancestors is likely to be of greater benefit to other Firths who cannot currently trace their ancestors back. Getting information from DNA testing is really a team effort: the more people who test, the more information provided by the results.
I've got a separate question about your comment in another thread, I'll post my question there
