Carol, I think the only advantage of testing the son instead of upgrading the father would be in the rare case where the son had a new mutation. That would be nice to know, but not vital, and it is pretty rare -though it did happen to another father-son pair in our project. (Remember, these mutations have no effect on anything health-related, it's basically just a changed number for a marker.)
On the other hand, it would be much cheaper to transfer Horace's results from Ancestry.com to FTDNA, and simultaneously upgrade to 67 markers. That's probably the way to go. We can't mention prices here, I'll email you offline (I may have an old address for you; tell me if you don't get it by Wednesday). Or, since there's a time limit for the sale, it may be faster & easier to just call FTDNA at (713) 868-1438 and say you're interested in transferring his Ancestry.com results into the Thrift /Frith /Firth Project at FTDNA and upgrading to 67 markers.
You asked about a membership at FTDNA. FTDNA does not operate by ongoing subscription fees like ancestry.com does, it's all included in the price of the test or transfer fee.
thanks
Richard
