Dorothy "Dot" Niederriter Fischer, age 98, of Erie, passed away on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at St. Mary's Asbury Ridge. Dot was a lifelong resident of Erie. She was born on November 18, 1913, the daughter of the late Frederick and Gretchen Zimmerman Niederriter. During her long and fruitful life, she devoted herself to her family and to St. Joseph's Church. She also worked as an opinion researcher as well as in the cafeteria at Tech Memorial High School. For over 40 years, she and her immediate family and her sister's families made an annual pilgrimage to Allegheny State Park where they enjoyed the peace and serenity of rural living for one week each summer. In her later years she remained active by volunteering at the Food Bank, learning German, bible study, cross country skiing, knitting and reading. She traveled with her niece, Ruth Swaney to Germany as well as to Arizona on an archeological dig. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband John, as well as three brothers, Girard, Joseph and Leonard Niederriter and two sisters, Edith Froelich and Rita Swaney. She is survived by one brother, Charles Niederriter and one sister, Jeanne Hirsch, both of Erie. Dorothy is also survived by her five children, Mary Alice Piotrowski (Thomas) of Waterford, Martha Karle (David) of Girard, Kathy Boyle of North Huntington, Rita Reitzell of Erie and John Fischer (Jeanne) of Erie. She also raised as her own, Frederick "Fritz" Gingenbach (Lisa) of Millcreek. She loved her 12 grandchildren, Kimberly Enterline, Scott Karle, Brian, Kenneth and Gregory Boyle, Chris, Matthew and Patrick Reitzell, John Henry and Erick Fischer and Tyler and Garrett Gingenbach as well as her seven great-grandchildren, Tyler, Devon and Clara Enterline, Isaac and Melanie Reitzell and Eve and Lillian Reitzell. The family wishes to offer a special thanks to Dorothy's aides, Karen Tucholski and Karen Walla. Friends may call on Friday at the Francis V. Kloecker Funeral Home, Inc. 2502 Sassafras St. Erie, Pa. 16502 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and are invited to the Funeral Mass on Saturday at St. Joseph Church/Bread of Life Community at 10 a.m. with the Rev. John Fischer officiating.
Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made on Dot's behalf to Clelian Heights, 135 Clelian Heights Ln., Greensburg, PA. 16501, the Second Harvest Food Bank, 1507 Grimm Dr. Erie, PA. 16501 or the charity of one's choice.
