Jonathan Fisk (obit) d: 1879 KS

Obituary --- Near Leslie, Reno county, Kansas, about the fifth of the present month, there died Jonathan Fisk, aged fifty-three years. His death was the result of an attack of bilious fever. He was a soldier in the Mexican war, serving with the company from Coshocton, Ohio. Afterward he was a frontiersman in Minnesota, a hunter and trapper. He was a volunteer in the war of the rebellion. He joined company H of the forty-third Indiana infantry, at Greencastle, in October 1861. He was a model soldier. He has five month in the rebel prison, at Camp Ford, near Tyler, Texas. With three comrades he escaped on the last day of September 1864, and after tramping over five hundred miles through a hostile country, reached Little Rock, Arkansas, then held by Union forces, in forty-eight days. The suffering on that trip was simply terrible. Fisk possessed the heroic virtues to a remarkable degree, and was the warm personal friend of hundreds of good soldiers. Comrade. ---- Cincinnati Daily Commercial.

Hutchinson News (Weekly)
Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas
Thursday, May 1, 1879
Page – 2 *** column – 4
Re: MARIA FISK, daughter of EDWARD FISK - Glasgow area?

As you will have read from my previous postings on Ancestry, Maria Kilworth was my 3xgreat grandmother and I wondered if you have had any more success with trying to trace her and the elusive Louis Kilworth.

I do have Maria's Death Certificate in Scotland if you don't have a copy but I have tried many avenues to trace a death for Louis but only found another marriage in 1829 of a Louis Kilworth to Anne Seward in Middlesex.

One bonus was that I through the Genealogy Research Directory I met a distant relative in England who descends from the son of Maria and Louis i.e. Lewis who was born in 1821.

Every Good Wish and I look forward to reading your reply.
Fay Sowerby

Hello Hugh

I have birth certificate 18 Nov 1846 , Islington West, giving george green Fisk (No e, which is added later) giving George Fisk (brewer) as father and sarah Ann Fisk (formerly Cooper) of 3 Denmark Street, Islington .
Sarah Ann Fisk was informant 3 denmark st, Barnsbury Rd, 18 dec. 1846.
Then the trail goes cold until I believe he was on 1851 census as staying with grandparents in Haughley with jeremiah & Maria Cooper (written and deciphered as George G Fest(think spelling mistake).
His mother mentioned as widow visiting Mildenhall in 1851 census ( Susan Fisk) poss. spelling error(noted on FISKES .co.uk) giving her as born in Haughley
After this I have both Sarah & George G Fisk in all the next census's in Hintlesham and her marriage to Charles Hayward in 1957 (both noted as widow). I have charles previous marriage certificate to Sarah Henrietta Cooper July 13 1843 - her father named as Jeremiah Cooper. Both brought a child to the marriage , G G fisk and Eliza Mary Ann Hayward , who married in 1869 and had 8 children, in Hintlesham.#
There are lots of Sarah coopers and George fisk

I will try and find the birth cert. details given by Michael Shaun mahoney
Many thanks.
Linda

Hi Linda,
I've dug out an email from Michael Shaun Mahoney that I received back in 2002, in it he refers to GG's birth certificate and says that Sarah Ann's father was given on it as William Cooper the ratepayer of that address (3 Denmark St, where GG was born) who owned a brewery at 25 John St. I'd be interested to know why you think that information is incorrect?
Regards,
Hugh Fiske
www.fiskes.co.uk

George Fisk is only on FISKES website as a ? (of which there are many)and married to Sarah Ann Fisk(nee cooper) - however I am convinced the info for her is incorrest.
I have george green fiskes birth certificate which gives father , George fisk as a brewer and the registered address in Islington.
If the info I have found is corrrect Sarah's father is Jeremiah Cooper from Haughley, not William Cooper , as brewer, from 25 st johns st, islington.
I am sure george fisk must have been from suffolk , but why they went to london for the birth of their son.
I can trace both sarah fisk nee cooper and george green fisk after 1851 for marriage and death.
So I should put a request for anyone who has the suffolk burial index to check for me or else go to record office?
Many thanks.
Oliver Fisk m. Olive Wickes

I am looking for information on Oliver Fisk, father of Hope Fisk who married John Comstock.

"A Comstock genealogy: descendants of William Comstock of New London, Connecticut" pg 84 gives the following:

"FAMILY 171. 478. John6 Comstock [Jonathan 5], b 1764; d. about 1838, at Lockport, N. y.; m. Hope Fisk, b. 1774, Oct. 10; d. 1810, Dec. 6. She was daughter of Oliver Fisk, who was a prisoner on a British man-of-war, escaping by swimming three miles, and died a few days after from pleurisy."

"History and genealogy of a branch of the Weaver family" pg 117 gives the following:

"[John Weaver] married in Coventry, July 3, 1782, Olive (Wickes) Fiske, dau. Of John and Hester Wickes and widow of Oliver Fiske, whom she married in Coventry, July 3, 1768. She was born in Coventry, Oct. 30, 1750, and died there in February, 1841."

I have seen internet postings that Oliver had another daughter Eady, and that he was the son of Benjamin Fiske and Hannah Hammond, but such postings seem to be unsourced.

Any help that could be provided in documenting this family would be appreciated.

Matt LaFlash

John Whitney Terry married 2nd Renia Walker in Sept. of 1930. They had one child that I have. She had 2 children from a previous marriage. John Whitney & Maggie had 8 children according to my book.
I do not have an exact marriage date for Lafayette Terry & Lucinda Fisk. Nor a date of death for Lucinda.
It sounds like you have pretty good record of your family with a few unanswered questions. If you knew what county and state you might try vital records or cemetery records for a death date.

Robert Lee went by Lee, It took me 30 years to get that one!
Eva May must have done the tombstone for Wm L. as it is almost identical to hers. She listed the children of Wm L on his stone. I would think your Trudy is my Gertie as she later appears as Gertrude and since Gert is the only child without a middle name, I wonder if she had Lucinda in her name some where. Eva May married Marvin B Mills in TX or OK.
John did marry Maggie and both are buried in the Old Union Church Cem in TN. They had 9 children. I think he married a second time.

The names of the children are similar to what I have in my book, but I do not have all of the research from 30 years ago when I did the book. I have John Whitney -- you have John Whitley. John Whitney Terry married Maggie D. Hooten. I have the daughters as: Sally which could also be Sarah. Also Lucy & Trudy which you do not have, but you do have Girtie & Eva May which I don't have. I do not have Robert Lee Terry. I do not have Lafayette Terry's date of birth listed. What I have is incomplete.

My book has Lucinda Fisk who married Lafayette Terry as born in 1839. The 1860 Census for Jackson County, TN has a William Terry age 21, Lucinda Terry age 20, John Terry age 3, and Mary Terry age 1. This could be them. If it is, then Lafayette was born about 1839 according to this census. I do not have any more information at this time. The answer to your question is coming a little at a time. I'm glad you gave the family line back to the patriarch Stephen and gave where they were living and when, because it helps place everyone & make the job of finding information to help you possible. The book & author on the Terry Family that you mentioned is the one I was talking about.

I don't have anything on him. Stephen Terry of Hanover, VA was the father of Roland Terry of Granville Co, NC who had 3 sons who came to Jackson Co., TN. James Terry (1768 - 1828), Roland Terry Jr (March 4, 1787 - Aug 8, 1858), and William Terry (1790 - ?). The family was mainly in Jackson Co, TN & also in Overton Co TN & Putnam Co, TN all neighboring counties in the early years. There was a book on the Terry Family with one of the authors in Jackson Co TN who has since died. If you tell me where his father's family lived & where he lived & married, maybe I can find out. When did they leave Tennessee?

I have the book you wrote. I have the Fisk/E family back to about 1400. I am related to them through my Terry line and my Flanery line. I am trying to find out when and where E Lucinda died. I have found Wm Lafayette's grave in OK, with 1 of his daughters, maybe 3. First names are right birth dates are close. Just can't prove it! Do you know anything about Wm Lafayette's son Robert Lee Terry? He married Minnie Laura Clark abt 1888. He went by Lee. I can't find him as an adult in any census, but have found his wife and kids with another man in the 1900 census. States they have been married 5 years. He had to die or divorce betwn 1891 and 1894. Robt lee was my great grandfather. Any ideas?

I wrote a book on Moses Fisk called the Life & Writings of Moses Fisk. It lists Lucinda Fisk, his granddaughter who married Lafayette Terry. They had a grandson Sam Terry. Will Walter Terry, another grandson, lived across the road from my grandfather in Cookeville Tennessee. There is alot of information of Moses Fisk, his academy for girls which was the first of its kind in the south, and his other activities such as abolition of slavery, trying to found a school for the Cherokee, road building, surveying, etc. He also educated boys.

I have some copies still of my book on Moses Fisk -- The Life & Writings of Moses Fisk -- which tells alot about Moses Fisk & the Fisk Family genealogy back to Daniel Fisk in 1208 in Laxfield, County Suffolk, England. Moses Fisk taught at Dartmouth College until 1795 when he left to come to the territory that became Tennessee in 1796. The Fiske Fisk Family in Massachusetts who were descendants of immigrant Nathan Fiske are also listed from 1640 when he immigrated into the 1800's & the descendants of Moses Fisk into the 1900's.
FISK James D

James Donald Fisk

BURNT HILLS — James Donald Fisk, known to Capital Region baby boomers as “Uncle Jim Fisk,” host of “The Freddie Freihofer Show,” has died.

Fisk, 91, of Burnt Hills, New York (Saratoga County) passed away Saturday at the Ellis Center.

Thousands of area children appeared on the WRGB program, also called “Breadtime Stories,” that first aired in November 1949. Fisk, a Glens Falls native, was its host from July 23, 1956, to 1966, when it was discontinued.

The show featured “squiggles,” a cartoon drawing completed by Fisk — and previous hosts — with “abstract” assistance from kids in the audience, WRGB’s website says. For many preschoolers, it was their first experience interrelating imagination, drawing skills and the magic of television.

“Breadtime Stories” was the first live local color series.

More recently, Fisk founded the well-known company JIMAPCO — “Maps to swear by, not at.”

Fisk began working at WRGB in 1945, during the early days of television, when programs were all locally produced and live.

In 1956, he moved his family from Scotia to Burnt Hills and had a variety of responsibilities as host of “The Freddie Freihofer Show.” Every day he’d create the stories, write commercials, do his own costume and makeup and conduct a pre-show warmup. He also handled tickets and promotion, and was WRGB’s general staff art director until 1968, when syndicated television began to make local programming obsolete.

By then, he was already starting on JIMAPCO. His first map was of Burnt Hills, which he called home for more than 50 years. The map was created to help organize a church canvassing project, but he needed to print 2,000 of them, so he asked Veeder and Yelverton drug store to sell leftover copies. With that success, the company was born.

With each successive map, Fisk refined his products and would eventually sell more than 150 of them throughout the country. He resigned from JIMAPCO in 1991, but remained active as a designer into his 80s.

Fisk was the son of David and Grace Fisk of Hudson Falls, where he grew up. His father was a prominent Hudson Falls attorney. After graduating from Hudson Falls High School, Fisk went to Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio and Yale University, studying math and theatrical set design.

His graduate work was interrupted by World War II, when he was an officer in the U.S. Army’s 96th AA Regiment, and later in the newly-formed 7th Army, touring the Pacific, European and African theaters.

He married Jane Gitsham in 1942 while on a short military leave and came back to Hudson Falls in 1945.

In a prophetic happenstance, Fisk had paid a visit in the mid-1930s to the attic of a Hudson Falls neighbor, Johnny Mills, chief engineer for the Sandy Hill Iron and Brass Works. Mills had created a huge contraption to receive a television image that was being experimentally broadcast by General Electric Co. in Schenectady.

Mills was kept informed about when signals were being broadcast so that he could work on improving reception. He was one of the earliest scientists working on development of this new medium, which became a large part of Fisk’s life.

Fisk was active throughout his life in a number of community projects and services, including the Burnt Hills Ambulance Squad, Burnt Hills Library Board, Burnt Hills Methodist Church, various schools and charitable endeavors. He also enjoyed creative hobbies such as building a sailboat, creating and licensing word puzzles and building elaborate model train scenarios.

Fisk was predeceased in 1981 by his first wife, Jane Gitsham Fisk.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Mary Lou Fisk; his sister, Grace Elizabeth Giddings; four children, David (Christina), Thomas (Margaret), Barbara (Gregory) Gachowski and Sarah (Kevin) West; stepdaughter, Margo Ryerson; six grandchildren, Stacy Mendrick and Michael Fisk, Jamie Gachowski and Stephanie Hample and Erika and Connor West; three step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 73 Midline Road, Ballston Lake.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Make A Wish Foundation, the Adirondack Lyme Disease Foundation, or Antioch College.

Re: MARIA FISK, daughter of EDWARD FISK - Glasgow area?

Hi Brett,

Maria Fisk is my 3xgreat grandmother on my maternal side of the family. I have spent a lot of time over the years researching this family and there is another child who was born to Maria and Louis namely, Lewis who was born prior to Susan. I have not however been successful in tracing the genealogy of Maria further back...I am always hoping some record will lead to some information.

I descend through Maria and Louis' daughter Susan. By the way, I have a copy of Maria's Death Certificate in Scotland and the information which was given by her son Lewis was that her father was from Norfolk and was a farmer.

Every Good Wish
Fay

Hi Bob,
I've been reading your messages and thought maybe you can help. We recently found out one of our relatives was the 2nd wife of Noyes Mayo Fisk. Noyes M. Fisk is the son of Harry G. Fisk, which you probably know. Anyway, we are looking for info on Jeanette Anita Wilde, she married an Elmer (Peter) Paradis, then changed her name to Janet P. Fisk after she was married to Noyes. We have copies of the Social Security, showing the names she used, but its the parents that are confusing us. She list a Richard Wilde and an Anne Sharon on one, then a John Wilde and Anne Sharon Pierce on another. Not sure if you can help or not, but... thought I'd ask. Thank You!!!
Yvette
