Re: John Fiske Sr. 1758-1825

I am from John Fiske sr through his first wife Abigail Wakefield. Through their daughter Lucy Fiske who married Richard Bean, jr in Waterboro, ME.
I have seen John Fiske, sr and Comfort's grave as well as Lucy and Richard Bean's grave headstones. They are on a small road in York Co, ME. They came to Waterboro around 1801.
John died on 26 Apr 1825 and Mrs. Cumfort Stover Day marriage intentions to John Fiske 26 Jul 1795 in Wells, ME and she died 16 Nov 1824. Of all the graves in the small cemetery on a hill, the Fiske and Bean family's are the only ones still readable. Though I will say when I say them in 2008 and then 2009 there had been a bad snow weather and tree limbs were down everywhere. I don't know how much longer they are going to be readable.
I started my research on them from the book "Fiske and Fisk Family" by Frederick Clifton Pierce. I found the book online at Hertiage Quest through my library. I know and have seen the very worn copy in Portland, Me at the Maine Historical Society, where I am a member. When I visit Portland each year I camp at the MHS for several days looking through their records. That is where I found the marriages of John Fiske to his first and second wives in books on Wells and Kennebunk, ME.
Hope this helps and it is nice to meet another Fiske.

I know Cumfort's people were also listed in the Wells and Kennebunk books at the MHS. I just did not copy them because that was not my side. Though for about 4 hours I thought is was till I found Abigail Wakefield.

You can also see the transcriptions of the grave headstones in their cemetery online at Waterboro Public Library at www.waterborolibrary.org I have not been to the site in a couple of years because I did my own transcription of the Fiske/Bean headstones. So I assume the Waterboro Lib still has the list online. It was a very good list for such a very small library that is not open all the time during the week, but a good library. Hope this helps.

Dianne Bean Barfield

Emeretta (Thorndike) Fiske, Rockland, Maine

I have no connection to this family. This appeared in the Dec. 18, 1920 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette:

"MRS. JAMES FISKE - Emeretta (Thorndike), wife of James D. Fiske, died early Thursday morning at her home, 64 Mechanic street, after an illness of about two months. The funeral services will be held there Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. J.S. Crossland officating.

The deceased was in her 75th year, a daughter of the late Capt. Eben Thorndike and Barbara (Linnekin) Thorndike. Her father was lost off the coast of Ireland when she was six years of age. Her marriage to Mr. Fiske took place 52 years ago last March and her domestic career of more than half a century was filled with kindly and affectionate deeds which will have for their heritage the affectionate memory of a worshipping family and the large circle of friends who had founds so much in her life to love and revere. Mrs. Fiske's death was due to an incurable disease - its nature unsuspected, and its action swift once it had manifested itself.

The deceased united with the First Baptist church under the pastorage of Rev. Robert W. Van Kirk, and was also a member of the W.C.T.U. She is survived by her husband, three daughters - Mrs. Frances Burrowes of Thomaston, Mrs. Ada Dalzell of Rockland and Mrs. Karl B. Sturgis of Howard, R.I.; one son, Louise T. Fiske of Attleboro, Mass.; a half-sister, Mrs. Lucinda Kaler of Glencove; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. One of her grandchildren, Charles Oliver Fisk, died in France during the war."

Here is what I have from our family Bible:
Ezra Fiske Nourse (mother's name Nourse) was born April 2, 1776 son of William Fisk Butchelder (mom´s name Butchelder) and Eunice Nourse (or Norse) Ezra worked in the House of Representatives in Massachusetts, and also in the Maine State House of Representatives. Ezra diesd abt 1870 at the age of 94 years, his wife was Melinda Blake (married name Fiske); she was born in 1784, and married Ezra in 1801, she died in 1868 at 84 yrs
Ezra and Melinda had my greatgreatgrandfather DUDLEY BLAKE FISK (1820); he was married to Mary Ann Ashton (later Fiske), she was born in Ireland. Dudley and Mary Ann Ashton fathered my greatgarndfather CHARLES DUDLEY BLAKE FISKE in Hoohsett NH in 1850. Charles DB was state Senator twice in MA in 1905, he married Susan Elizabeth Sparhawk in 1875 (later Susan Fiske). Senator Charles DB was also Justice of the Peace and CEO of a large Insurance Co, he managed FISK Hospital for treatment of drug and alcohol addicts. They had two sons William Francia (died at 33 in 1914) and my grandfather CLARENCE AMES FISK IN JAN 4TH 1887. (I am giving you just my direct line of ancestors). Charles DB retired around 1922. Clarence Ames Fisk married Florence Abbie Rand (born in Franklin, NH), in june of 1912. Florence daughter of Burt Henry Rand and Abbie Stewart (ne) was born in 1890. Clarence Ames and Florence Abbie migrated to work for the Wanalancet Co of Boston, to Lima, Peru in 1918 where he became Purchasing Agent for cotton, and company representative. They arrived in Peru in 1918 with two sons Charles Taylor (5) and Ashton Sparhawk (2). Grandfather worked in Lima until april of 1930. I have a Boston Globe paper clipping dated february first 1920 whichi describes the first use of an airplane by a business man for commercial purposes in Peru. I have tried to find if HE, by chance, entered into the history of peruvian airplanes history... They had a son in Lima, my uncle Kenneth Fisk in 1924. In 1922 greatgrand parents Charles DB and Susan Elizabeth came to visit with their son's family in Lima. There are paper clippings of Senator Fisk departure from Massachusetts. They stayed there until august of 1929 when Senator Fisk died. His body was returned to Boston by my grandfather (I have his letters); and was buried in the family plot in Newtown Cementery in Boston. Grandfather Clarence Ames with wife Florence Abbie, mother Susan Elizabeth and three sons had to migrate to Chile during the world crash of 1929-30. Cotton plantation/business went bankrupt. They arrived in Chile April 10th , 1930. My dad CHARLES TAYLOR FISK RAND Then 17, had studid in Peru and became an accountant. Clarence Ames worked for several american companies in the 1930's Panagra, Graces Line Shipping, and an Export Import Co in the port of Valparaiso. Susan Elizabeth died abt 1933 (I am looking for her document trail); Granmother died in 1948 of uterine cancer. My dad married my chilean mother Maria Luisa Godoy in October 1937. They had five children all born in CHILE (we are the first generation of FISKS born in Chile). Charles Mario (1938) retired from IBM lives in San Antonio TX, me Clarence Alfred Fisk (1940), I studied MSME at Georgia Tech in 1971; worked until 2003 in USA, Spain, Canada; and retired to live with wife Patricia in Santiago, Chile. My brother Arthur Edward (1941-1961), Herbert Anthony (1943-2008) , and sister Mary Charlotte (1945) of Madrid, Spain. That is my line.

Back to Ezra Fisk Nourse parents WILLIAM FISKE BUTCHELDER (I always keep their mothers name at the end) (1755)Wendham, Ma.He worked as State Rep in NH in 1809; NH State Elector he died june 4th, 1831 at 76 in Wendham, Essex, MA. He rests in Town Hall Burying Grounds in Amherst,NH. He married EUNICE NOURSE (1752-1818),in 1773.

William Fiske B. was son of WILLIAM FISKE FULLER (1726-1777) of Wendham MA and SUSSANAH BATCHELDER (later Fiske) (1731-1810) William and Sussanah were married in 1755.

William Fiske Fuller was son of EBENEZER FISK KILHAM (1679-1728) and Elizabeth Fuller (later Fiske)(1686-1732). They lived in Wendham, MA.

Ebenezer Fisk Kilham was son of William Fisk Musket and Sarah Kilham (you can see why we use mother's name at the end...there are three William Fiskes in a row).

I can trace my line of FISK to 1399. I manage a Family Tree with 745 entries at http://www.myheritage.com. It is in SPANISH; if you are interested I can send you an invitation to join (free); I have pictures, documents, etc upto Dudley Blake Fiske; and mostly dates and places of residence, for the rest. I have written biographies for most of my ancestor Fisk (in spanish).

Take care, hope to hear from you.

Clarence Alfred Fisk Godoy ll.

Hi there,
This is very interesting to me as I've done a fair amount of work on the Fiske Family from Massachusettes. Do you know who Ezra Fiskes FATHER was or better yet his Grandfather?
I ask as I have an Ezra Fiske born 12/25/1740 in Weston, MA. I have nothing further down the line on this man however if he in fact had a son Ezra that would fit into your time line of an Ezra Fiske born in 1776.
Any Ideas would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Scott Baumann
I also see why I couldn't see what you meant. As you said I had confused the two George's but since the original post back in 2004, I had fixed it. So when I was asked about it this time, it didn't show up anymore.

This time I found the reference but it was now correctly attached to George Dixon Fiske. I just took the added step and added the name of the brother, Dr. Henry Mortimer Fiske whose obituary it was.

Hello Robert,
I now understand what the error is. You have my great great grandfather, the CA pioneer George Fiske, brother of Henry Mortimer Fiske, listed as George Damon Fiske, and his son as George Damon Fiske, Jr. That is incorrect. The pioneer is George DIXON Fiske who married Elizabeth Chadbourne Loring. His son is George DAMON Fiske (no Jr.). When I read about the obituary, you were referring to George Dixon as being the surviving brother of Henry M. When you said "George Damon is listed as the brother in the obit., I thought you meant Harry's obit. I know how you got confused. The Geo.'s are always listed as Geo. D. so there would be no way to know that one is George Dixon and one is George Damon.
Lee

I have been looking through all my records and unfortunately my computer crashed several months ago and we have not been able to recover the data but we are still hoping to buy the software that will fix it when we get our income tax money. But with the tree I have saved, which is from Jun of '09 I don't show that I had an Obit for Dr. Harry Fiske.

So I am not sure what you are referring to, unless I found something last summer between the last save and the crash.

Bob Birt

Family memebers included Stella, Anna, Rose, Walter and Helen - who were all born around 1900-1920 or so. There was also a 6th child that I do not know the name/sex of. The parents names may have been John(Jan) and Annie. I believe John and Annie to be Polish/Russian immigrants. Any information would be very greatly appreciated.

I've been working on this information:

Found in 1850 census in Natick, Warwick/Kent Co. area of Rhode Island - Home of Waterman Franklin age 60 (b.abt 1790)and his wife (Ruhamah?) Age 57 with Anna H. Franklin age 17, Flora (last name Wickes?) Age 16 , and then Lydia A. Collins age 12. This 'Ruhamah's' name comes up often.
About five doors down is a Betsey Collins age about 57 living in the home of Uriah Arnold age 30 and his wife Esther A. age 26. Some entries on LDS and Rootsweb say the Uriah’s wife was Esther Ann Collins, daughter of Rowland Collins and Betsey nee ? ____. Rowland Collins is in Scituate, Rhode Island on the 1830 Census index. He isn't on the 1840.
I have other snippets of information with the family name of Franklin with a Fiske associated with it. Nothing concrete though. I'll find them and forward them on for you.

I'm on vacation for the next two weeks so I will try to get back in touch with you when I return.
Thanks.

Elsie is probably to old to have had a son in 1839, she was born about 1793. Elsie is never refered to as Elizabeth. Elsie’s first recorded child was 1811 and her last recorded child was born about 1820, nineteen years prior to Charles; There is no record in Cumberland for Charles in 1839 and Elsie was living in Cumberland. Why would the older children be recorded and not Charles?
I believe this eliminates Charles and Elsie as parents of our Charles.

I think that I found another Charles Fiske with a stronger connection Asquire Fiske'wife than with Charles and Elsie.

Lydia Collins, was the daughter of Alpheus COLLINS and Mary FRANKLIN (I believe)daughter of Waterman FRANKLIN the same Waterman Franklin Lydia was living with in the 1850 census.
Mary Franklin's sister Aurilla Franklin married Asquire FISKE,son of Charles & Elsie.

Our Charles married Elizabeth, who dies(Sept 1849) prior to the 1850 federal census, their children Charles,& Ezeriah are living in Pawtucket, Massachusets with Sylvester Colvin(Series M432-308 page 327, #5).
The marries Mary Ann Gifford in North Providence, RI in 1851. Ok,strange fact,in 1865 our Charles dies in Cumberland, RI

According to the marriage record of Charles Fiske & Lydia Collins, Charles' parents are Charles & Elizabeth.
Charles & Lydia had Augustus A., Charles and other children.

I am still checking all this out.
What do you think?

I think I may be able to help.
Augustus Fiske and Mary Garvin had five children, 2 sons William born 1901 and died 1969 and Charles born 1906 and died 1972, and 3 daughters Mary, Lydia & Rita. All born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island

To my knowledge William was married twice and had two children (1st wife, Madeline). A daugther Madeline and a son William.

The son William born about 1934 and died 1962 in Rhode Island
Madeline was born about 1932 and married Daniel, and about 1962 was living in Cumberland, Rhode Island.

Please let me know if this is your family.
