I only seem to have a James Frederick b 1883 who married Mary Cuerden and he had a James Frderick who married Audrey Proctor and a John William who married Joan Yorke are they any good?

My Fitchies are based mainly around Preston, David Fitchie born 1793 left Scotland, so my Scottish Fitchies start with his fgather,William Fitchie (weaver) born 1771 in Newtyle Cupar, he married Christian Williamson - those are the two lines I have followed, though on his side I can't get further back than his father William born 1750 who married Elspet Ireland.

This may not be much use to you, if you have any info about my tree I'd liketo hear from you.

Hello again

I have had a reply from our other relative and she is delighted but a bit stretched at the moment as he husband has been very ill however, I am sure she will respond before too long as she actually shares your I think great grandparents. I haven't looked at the Preston guild of masons because I think my David died quite young and Tessa and I feel a bit bitter and twisted because our David took in the Tullis boys and trained them as masons but they seem to get all the credit for the buildings in Preston I think the Harris Library/gallery and others with no mention of the Fitchies. We had a reunion one year when one of the Tullis family came over from Aus and we were invited to attend, there was an article in the paper and I did hope more info about William Fitchie the elder's parents would come out. He was born in Newtyle and moved to Cupar in Fife and I think he was in the weavers guild there. I think the Suttie family were also weavers. I have a friend in the US who also had an ancestor called David Fitchie from Newtyle in the 1700s and we are convinced we are related but cannot find the connection so we live in hope. it would be easier to e mail you because I could then scan in some pics someone sent me of graves if I have any of your relatives on them but I dont know how to give you my e mail address.
I hope you find more about Alice now!!
Yvonne

Hi Yvonne,

Great to hear from you and so quickly too.
Wonderful to get such a lot of information about the family, especially in areas where I'd drawn a blank. I shall spend a happy morning following the new leads.

I shall also look up the Tullis family on the net. I had thought they must be related but not in a direct line.

Have you looked at the Preston Guilds, our stonemasons must have been members. I don't know if their records are online, I may have to wait until I can get to the Prestron Records Office - we moved to Spain when we retired a year ago.

Best wishes Carol

How exciting to hear from one of the Fitchie clan, it has been very quiet for a long time. I have mapped out the descendants of David Fitchie and Mary (Howe) over the years. I believe they had 7 children, your William, James m Ann Woan, John m Hannah Cross, David m Margaret Barton, my Jeanetta who married Richard Rigby and Margaret m William Sykes.

Your William and Elizabeth Carter had James 1841-1871, David b 1844 who married Alice Wiggans 1881, Elizabeth b 1849, William b 1851 m Mary?, Elizabeth b 1853 m Thomas Hodgson, Christiana b 1855, Mary b 1855 m Alfred Woolton and Jenita b 1858. I am in touch with someone whose great grandmotehr was Elizabeth b 1853. My Jeanetta Fitchie b 1831 was the sister of your Wiliam b 1819. David Fitchie b 1793(their father) was a stonemason in Preston and connected to the Tullis family if you have found their web site on the internet. Some of them were helped by our David to become stonemasons and they built some of the civic buildings in Preston.

Carol Whitehead Query

Hope you are still looking for replies.

My Grandmother was Alice Fitchie who left her husband, Arthur Manley and her young son (my father)to go to Canada in the early 1900s. He didn't know about this until he was in his 30's.

Alice's father was David Fitchie, a stonemason, married to Alice ....(who?) his father William was a stonemason and building surveyor and married, Elizabeth Carter of Ribchester. His father, my Gt. gt. gt. grandfather was David Fitchie who married Mary Howe of Lancaster and was born in Cupar, Fife 29 Dec 1793. His father William, a weaver in Cupar, was born in 1771 he married Christian Williamson on 10 Jan 1790, her parents were David Williamson and Janet Suttie. But I have no more information about the Fitchies.

I would love to know anything about Alice who went to Canada, her mother Alice, who was married to David Fitchie (1844-1890), Elizabeth Carter and who were Mary Howe's parents?

hi everyone. I was searching through the internet for the ancestory of the last name fitchie, which is my mothers maiden name and came across this board and thought i would post. My grandfather was David Fitchie who married Leila (johnson).unfortunately he passed away in the late 70's before i was born. I dont know exact dates of his birth or death though. I would have to ask my mother about that information. Anyways I know that he was born in Preston England and came to canada with his family when he was about 8 or so maybe? His sisters, were Martha Fitchie and floerance, who were also mentioned somewhere on the board. anyways if anyone i find all of this very interesting and would love to learn more about my roots. feel free to contact me through the board. thanks

I am not sure about the Howe but I do know that David Fitchie who was my great great grandfather came from Scotland and married a Mary Howe who lived in Lancaster. They then moved to Preston and he was a stone mason. They did seem to use surnames as Christian names in those days. See if you can find out who your James Howe's parents were I have a james Howe married to Grace Bailey living 1867-1922 and he was son of David fitchie and Margaret Barton and this David was son of my David Fitchie. In fact I think all the Preston Fitchie's stem from David and Mary.

My Aunt Minnie (now in the Isle of Wight) reports that her father was Hamilton Fitchie from Co. Down.
Apparently he had a brother Robert.
Minnie was saying that in them days the parents were quite secretive about their family, either because of sectarianism or simply Irish family feuds. She does remember the photograph of her dad and uncle wearing their orange sashes - so they were definitely Protestant - if that's of any help!

Yes Liz, you're probably right. I know that part of the family from Preston. They were really progressive in that there were a number of interfaith marriages between Protestant and members of the Jewish community. Nice to see people don't have to worry about such foolishness anymore.

My great grand father was Thomas Tickford Fitchie and was a Scottish International soccer player 1906-1908. He also played for Arsenal in London where he must have been somewhat of an ace scoring over 30 goals for the club. Shame I've inherited nee'n of his footie skills!

Anyway just out of interest!
I am very interested in the Fitchie family as my great gradnmother was a Fitchie however, I have been in touch with Peter Tullisand he has my info. My great grandmother was the daughter of David Fitchie, brother to Janet and son of William and Christian. David's wife was Mary Howe and they married in Lancaster in 1818. They then moved to Preston where my great grandmother Jeanette was born in 1831. I want to find out why David moved south from Scotland and picked Preston and I presume Janet came south with her boys when she was widowed to get work for her boys. My great great grandfather is down on Jeanette's marriage certificate as deceased but a building contractor. I believe the Fitchies in Scotland were weavers.. I don't know if this is of interest.

Best Wishes Yvonne

My father (now deceased) was James Howe Fitchie born Preston 1967.
I just read your message about the Fitchie family and I thought it was very interesting.
I am Andrew Jame Fitchie, born Preston 1967. I now live in Australia. My father was James Howe Fitchie born Preston 1942. I apparantly was the first son to break the James Howe naming chain. My father is now dead, but his father is still alive ... James Howe, born I guess 1910-1920 time.
I'll ask my Grandfather if he knows of the history behind the move to Scotland, and let you know what he says.
