Hi Tom,
I'm descended from John J. Fithen and Mary Jane Crooks Fithen. As far as I know, John J. was born to William and Nancy Bell Fithen in 1820 and died in Winfield, Iowa in 1878; but I will re-check my files. The Fithen family did seem to stick to the "tried and true" names - cousins with identical names and "close" birth dates and places have confused me quite a few times. We can compare notes if you'd like, and try to nail down the assorted Johns, Williams, Marys, etc.
We're most likely related somehow!
Susan
templetoo@hotmail.com

I don't know if this is a coincidence or what, but my name Thomas Lewis Fithen from Puyallup WA, and my father is Thomas Leroy. My grandparents are descendants of John J Fithen, born 1820 in Ohio, and moved to Washington state in the early 1900's. I know there is some sort of connection between the Fithen and Fithian names, we could be related. There seems to be a lot of Thomas Leroy's, Thomas Lewis's in both lines.

Tom Fithen

John J Fithen 1820-1878 Parent's Not Correct

Hi,

I'm from a branch of the Fithen Family that moved to Washington State in the late 1800s. My great great grandfather is John J Fithen, born in Ohio in 1820. All the family trees have his parents as William & Nancy Fithen, however there are two John Fithen's in Ohio in the 1860 census, one who is living with William & Nancy in Warren Township, and one (listed as John J Fythen) in Clark Township. Both were 40 years old in 1860, but I have verified the one in Clark township as my great great grandfather through the children living with him, he is also in the 1870 census as John Fisher, again identified through the children with him. I would really like to find his (and my) place in the Fithen family tree, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom Fithen

Philly is very close to Cumberland county. There may be a connection.

I don't know for sure about Robert's parents. They are likely Seely Fithian (1758–1819) & Ethter Hunt (b 1766). But there were several Robert Fithians in Cumberland County about the same age. I'm not 100% sure this Robert is mine. It seems like South Jersey was packed with Fithians in those days.

According to online family trees Seely & Esther had three children: Reuben, Joel, & Robert. Seely remarried to Mary Ruth Burgin and had Ruth & John. No mention of an Aaron.

The Fithians of NJ & NY have a well documented family lineage on the web. For me, the only thing is figuring out if/where I fit in.

Hmm. Very interesting coincidence. Two Fithians, approximately the same age, both shoemakers, both had sons named after the other.

Do you know where Aaron lived when he was in the US? Was it in the vicinity of South Jersey?

I'm looking for more info on the family of Robert S. Fithian (b 1805) & wife Margaret (b 1807) of Bridgeton/Cohansey, Cumberland, NJ. Robert worked as shoemaker.

They had 10 children: Elizabeth (1828), Mary (1830), Sarah (1832), Margaret (1835), David PE (1838), Harriet (1840), Aaron B (1842), Charles OD (1846), Sophia F (1849), and Thomas (1850).

I believe Sophia F (Frances?) may have married John Hibbert Miller (b 1844 in PA) in 1868, and may be my gr-gr-gr-grandmother.

--Jason

I will have to dig out some of the genealogy papers that my cousin looked up on the Fithians and see if any of these folks are listed. I have been mainly looking for "living" relatives in England/Wales. After my gr-grandfather, Charles Ball Fithian and his 8 children, we sort of lose a couple of generations before any other names are listed. Also, for some unknown reason, the relatives over there go by "Fithian-Franks" or "F Franks" and do not use "Fithian" alone, so it has been rather difficult to look them up.

I am looking for info on Aaron Burr Fithian (bn. 1805 approx), married to Margaret Hodgson (approx 1810) - they had 7 children: Robert (1832); Ann E. (1836); Henry C. (1838); Charles Ball (1839); Tiribria (1842); Napoleon B (1844); Cadwaladen (1848). Charles Ball is my great grandfather. He went to England/Wales and ended up marrying a woman from Wales. My grandfather was born in Wales and then came to the US as a teenager. His 7 siblings stayed in the United Kingdom. I actually located my mother's first cousin on the ancestry.com two years ago and have met him. This cousin and I are both working on our genealogy. We seem to come to a "dead end" when trying to get info on Aaron Burr Fithian and his wife, Margaret Hodgson. I was just wondering if my Aaron Burr and your Robert could have been brothers, and each named one of their sons after the brother????? My Aaron Burr was listed as a "shoe maker" in one of the census.

In the 1850 census for Philadelphia County 3rd Ward, North Liberties is where Aaron Burr is listed as a shoemaker. It says that Aaron was born in NJ, his wife Margaret born in PA. All of the children were born in PA. Aaron was my gr-gr-grandfather. We cannot not find any info on him. Do you have names of parents, or other family members, for this Robert Fithian? Of the children, Henry is known to have been killed in Civil War, two other brothers were Post Commanders at Washington in that war. Ann worked in the Registry of the US Treasury. And Charles Ball, my gr-grandfather was a master mariner and ended up in Wales where he met his wife. Do you have any other info?

Robert, My ancestor, Joseph Johnson of Phila. in 1810 census, was married to Pleasant Ann Vanblunk. Very nearby lived a Richard Vanblunk, also in the 1810 census. Do you have an idea about his relationship to Pleasant? Brother, father? I can't seem to find her parents. There is a Richard Vanblunk (b. abt. 1730) and Sarah Meade living in Bucks Co. and Sarah had a sister named Pleasant. What are the dates of your Richards? Thanks for any help you can give me.
