Fitz of German origin

My ancestor, Edmund/Edmond L. Fitz/Fitts, died in Chatham County, NC in 1847 and was born around Charlotte, VA (probably Charlotte, Halifax, Mecklenburg, or Pittsylvania County). My family understands his ancestors came from Germany, around Frankfurt. Does anyone have information about a Fitz immigrating from Germany?
