FITZRANDOLPHs in Chesterfield, Derbyshire 1635-1672

Hi everyone, today in my local studies library, in a card index to the parish registers of St Mary's, Chesterfield, I found baptisms and burials for FITZRANDOLPHs that I can't seem to fit into any of the online genealogies. I am researching RENSHAWs and FORTHs who were contemporaries in 17th century Chesterfield. Thomas FORTH in his Will of 1663 names his sister-in-law Anne FITZRANDOLPHE and I believe she was nee ALLWOOD as Thomas FORTH had married Elizabeth ALLWOOD in 1630. I found a marriage of Edward FITZRANDOLPH to Ann ALLWOOD in 1607 Sutton in Ashfield but that seems too early for these baptisms and burials I've found at Chesterfield St Mary's. And Edward FITZRANDOLPH jnr seems to have been on the other side of the Atlantic at these dates. I'll list them here and if anyone can throw light on them for me, I'll be very grateful:

Bap 5 Jan 1635/6 John son of Edward & Anna FITZRANDOLPH of Normanton
Bap 14 Jan 1639/40 Charles son of Edward & Anna FITZRANDALL
Bap 6 Apr 1641 Philip son of Edward & Anna FITZRANDOLPH
Bap 13 May 1642 Joshua son of Edward FITZRANDOLPH
Bap 9 Aug 1643 Henry son of Mr Edward FITZRANDOLF of Walton
Burial 28 Jun 1646 Lucy dau of Mr Edward FITZRANDOLPH
Burial 11 Jan 1671/2 Joshua FITZRANDOLF of Normanton.

Btw, Normanton and Walton are satellite townships of Chesterfield and all are pretty close to Sutton in Ashfield (about 12 miles between them).

Cheers, Celia Renshaw in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, UK
Yes - I am a relative and a decendent of Samuel, which is indicated in some records as Samual. Were you of Peter, Peter James and Camden Fitzrandolph. If you are some of Camden's children dropped the Fitz in their children's names due to some unpleasant memories of their childhoods, arising from the family's sudden relocation from Western Virginia to Pleasant Gap, Missouri following the Civil War.

I am looking for a Randolph family that came from the
Edward Fitzrandolph/Elizabeth Blossom line and may have settled in Virginia, changing the name to Randolph. There also may be a connection in Philadelphia, with a member being Julianna Randolph. The Virginia family most likely has a military history.

I have Jediah Randolph 1765-1816 married to Nancy Jennings 23 dec 1793, and their son Thos. Randolph married to Sallie Lee Hunter or Sarah Randolph depending on the source. Also have Jed's mom and dad as Thomas Mann Randolph of Tuckahoe VA (of the famous VA family line of William Randolph and Mary Isham.)

I have used both OWT and One Great Family for research.

May you please share your tree?

Thanks,
Abbey

There is a genealogical FitzRandolph research site on MyFamily.com. It started as a research site for the FitzRandolphs, but since some of the FitzRandolphs dropped the "Fitz," the site now includes the Randolphs as well. There's information from bibles, cemeteries, censuses, book excerpts, land records, genealogies, etc., etc, etc. There are well over 5,000 postings and approximately 350 members on the site.

MyFamily sites are by invitation only so if any of you are interested in receiving an invitation, please send me your name and e-mail address. We'd love to have you. My e-mail is garysrascal at gmail.com

Re: Fitzrandolph-Edward-Nathaniel-etc.

I am looking for information on Mary Fitzrandolph [Thorne-Jackson-Fitzrandolph]. She was the daughter of Edward Fitz Randolph and Catherine Hartshorne (Edward was the son of Nathaniel FR and grandson of Edward FR & Elizabeth Blossom).

I have her birthdate as 24 May 1710. Her husbands were William Thorne, James Jackson, Jacob Fitz Randolph. I am specifically interested in her marriage to James Jackson. There is record in the Jackson family research of James marrying a MARY THORNE, with whom he had children beginning at least as early as Nov 1740. (This was his second wife – first being SARAH THORNE, sister of WILLIAM THORNE, Mary Fitzrandolph’s first husband). They then have James Jackson marrying a MARY FITZRANDOLPH on 26 May 1749 (James Jackson died in 1750). There are places I have seen James as having 2 wives, and then also as having 3. I believe it is possible that the second wife, MARY THORNE is actually the same person as MARY FITZRANDOLPH, as she was the widow of William Thorne and therefore would have been MARY THORNE at
the time they were married. Therefore, I think there may have been only one MARY, mother to all of James’ children.

Either way, this MARYFITZ RANDOLPH may have been in custody of James’ minor children at the time of his death in 1750. I am searching for his daughter (and possibly hers as well), MARGARET JACKSON, born Dec. 1745. I have documentation from Friends records of the births for JAMES and MARY JACSON (Sarah, John, Benjamin, Charles, Margaret).

So my questions are: Do you have documentation/information of MARY FITZRANDOLPH-THORNE’s marriage to James Jackson? Obviously I am looking for the actual date to piece together if she is in fact the mother of his children. Also – any information as to where/what happened to her after his death in 1750? I know she eventually married Jacob FitzRandolph. I have read that she was disowned by her family and excommunicated (if that is the right term) from the Quakers because of this marriage as they were first cousins. Do you have any information on MARGARET JACKSON (maybe even listed as MARGARET THORNE??). I am trying to see if this is the same Margaret Jackson as married Moses Tichenor around 1763, and if so, if she was also of the FitzRandolph line.

Thank you for any information you can provide.

I have a family conection to the Corneilus Fitz Randolph Family- a sibbling of my ggggrandfather married into the Fitz Randolph (Randolph) family. I have reason to believe there is another tie, to my ancestor, directly, am trying to prove it, it appears possibly that they droped the Fitz, to Randolph, and then were using Randall. Ive so far seen a Sarah Davis, and a Sarah Dean listed as wives, wondering if one is wife of jr. and the other senior, I am finding nothing. This stuff Im looking for isnt that far back, and Ive got people helping me (sad, I know) am still finding nothing, my fitzrandoplh who was the sister of my great-ggggrandfather, lived in Michigan, she died young, had a family contact me at my e-mail
JSlade0345@comcast.net

There's been speculation that Abel b 9/1/1716 might be the father of Abel b in Rhode Island that married Sara Dean. This Abel is in the Appedix (family #14) of The Descendants of Edward Fitz Randolph and Elizabeth Blossom, by Christian & Fitz Randolph. However, search as I might I have not been able find out if this is true or not. I have found other information that says Abel was b 1740 in Chester Washington, NY. Once again there is no consensus. I have two big folders on these Fitz Randolphs and the other New York and later Michigan Fitz Randolphs and cannot quite tie them all together.

Randolph, Virginia F. Randolph, Sylvia Randolph Grace, Sylvia Ripley and finally my mother, Sylvia Grace Whitt.
I have recently started researching the family history and would very much appreciate viewing your website at myfamily.com.
I have a lot of information already, but there is much more to discover.
Thank you so much.

The obituary of Robert Somers FitzRandolph b 24 Jan 1869 in Fredricton, NB, died 18 July 1942 in Fredericton, NB, states that he was the great-great-grandson of Robert FitzRandolph, the loyalist. Robert Somers FitzRandolph's father was Hon. Archibald FitzRandolph 1833-1902 whose father was James Horton FitzRandolph of Digby, Nova Scotia.
It also states that Nathaniel FitzRandolph was born in 1703 at Princeton, NJ. Nathaniel's son Robert was born in 1737 and came to Annapolis, NS, with other Loyalists in 1873 where he settlerd on a large tract of land near Bridgetown, NS.
I am missing a generation between Robert b 1737 and James Horton FitzRandolph?
I don't see a son Robert b1737 in the list of children of Nathaniel FitzRandolph of Princeton, NJ? Can anyone help?? with these two problems??

We're one who dropped the Fitz. My 2X ggf was Ellis B. FitzRandolph, my ggf was Charles F. Randolph. With that generation and the next (my grandfathers) the Fitz continued as a middle initial F. Starting with my father's generation, it has been just plain Randolph.

My descent from Edward and Elizabeth of Scituate is as follows:
Nathaniel
Edward
Edward
James
Edward
Ellis
Charles
Louis G.
Richard Sr.
Richard Jr. (me)

If anyone is interested in the Oklahoma (Fitz)Randolphs, please contact me, I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
rrandolphjr@sbcglobal.net

There is an almost illegible chart in the back of the book which traces one line of the family -- Edward and Elizabeth through the Joseph line (all Josephs for 5 generations). There's also a section which reviews the line from Rolf the Norseman to Edward the Pilgrim...

I've previously posted a message on here and want to remind those of you researching your FITZRANDOLPH roots of another place where you might want to do some research.

I'm one of the administrators of a MyFamily.com research site on FitzRandolph, Most of you know that over the years, SOME of the names changed - the Fitz was dropped from the FitzRandolph, The MyFamily research site was started two and a half years ago and now contains thousands of postings and probably about 500 members. It has book excerpts, genealogies, census data, cemetery and bible records, etc., etc., etc., plus we discuss various possibilities. In fact, we've been doing DNAs in an effort to find which early FitzRandolph our families connect with. It's been exciting and we've been very suprised with the results.
If any of you are interested in joining the MyFamily research site (no cost), please e-mail me. All I need is your name and e-mail address and I'll see you receive an invitation to the site. My e-mail address is
frhsnj@yahoo.com

I know that there is a Benjamin Fitzrandolph in Bladen County in the 1700s. His daughter married Joseph Kemp and they had one son before she died. Joseph gave Benjamin to his Fitzrandolph grandparents to raise and they dropped the Kemp and he is in the family records from then on as Fitzrandolph. But I think his grandfather was a Benjamin also.
The Fitzrandolphs and Kemps Benjamin Fitzrandolph(Kemp) died in 1841. The Fitzrandolph name pretty much dies out after the 1870s. There is no one with that last name in Bladen County now. I hope this helps.
